Kloverbox + MSA: Limited Edition Beach House Box

My Subscription Addiction is probably the most popular subscription box site in the whole universe. I would not even know what to do with myself if I had so many readers! I would actually have to edit my posts and maybe write less about my cat because the attention could go to her head. I personally read the MSA everyday so that I don’t miss out on boxes I don’t subscribe to.

Kloverbox has a mission to replace all the things you use with sustainable and healthy alternatives. I cannot think of a more exciting subscription box to partner with! While I was a little iffy about plopping down $100 (or two weeks worth of wine money) for any box considering I am just small time. Still, I figured it would be a good bet giving the reputation of both partners.

This was a one time box costing $100.

Do you think the founder of the site Liz has a beach house that is made entirely out of subscription boxes?

“The cure for anything is salt water, sweat, tears, or the sea” – Isak Dinesen

“The cure for anything is salt water, sweat, tears, or the sea” – Isak Dinesen

The quote bums me out in a way I can’t fully understand and will likely need to be sussed out by therapy. I think maybe because I believe that a nice lap cat can also be a cure… the cure to not having a lap cat.

Goldfaden MD - Sun Visor
Goldfaden MD – Sun Visor

Goldfaden MD – Sun Visor:Β This is very lightweight and so, perfect for reapplication during the day. What? You don’t reapply even though you know you are supposed to? Alright, I totally don’t either. Maybe that will change now that I have this product. I like that it is free of fragrance and other bad things. I don’t want everyone to smell that I am following the rules of sunscreen application!

If I spray this on my windshield will it help keep my diet coke cold while I run into the post office really quick?

One Love Organics - Vitamin C Body Polish
One Love Organics – Vitamin C Body Polish

One Love Organics – Vitamin C Body Polish: This was a spoiler that everyone had opinions on. I have one too, which is not surprising. Having a body polish makes sense for the summer because no one wants to see your dry patches. Well, that is lie. If you have a dry patch that looks like something be it animal or person then I would totally look if you invited me to. But then, I have always been a lover of the arts.

If body polish had been popular when “South Pacific” was written do you thinkΒ “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair” would be changed to “I’m Gonna Scrub That Man Right Outta My Skin?”

Tatcha - Enriching Renewal Cream
Tatcha – Enriching Renewal Cream

Tatcha – Enriching Renewal Cream: So this stuff is like $185 for a full size. The card assures me that a little goes a long way. I did some reading up on peoples thoughts about this box and came across Anna PA’s comments about loving this, so I am not even going to open it as I will just send it to her. I have no business trying any products that cost $185. I might as well work on an expensive drug habit.

Yes, I stalk all of you.Β

Hand in Hand - Sea Salt Liquid Hand Soap
Hand in Hand – Sea Salt Liquid Hand Soap

Hand in Hand – Sea Salt Liquid Hand Soap: I am super happy this is from the “Clean Water Collection” and not the “Hazardous Waste Water Collection” that they actually don’t even offer. This is really nice stuff and I would put it up there with those fancy guest soaps you don’t let anyone use. The smell and look say summer without any outstanding bills.

Is it tacky to put a note on this that reads “Family use the Borax!” or is it just good sense?

Thursday Friday - Gold Toe Tote
Thursday Friday – Gold Toe Tote
Thursday Friday - Gold Toe Tote (Inside)
Thursday Friday – Gold Toe Tote (Inside)

Thursday Friday – Gold Toe Tote: There are three different color variations and I will be upfront that I can’t help be envious of those who got the tan bag color because I am going to use this for work and not so much for the beach. Still, I like the bag, and the inside of the tote is sweet because it has pockets. I love that it has a place to attach keys and zip up my money. If any robber is reading this, I only carry like $7 on me at any time so I can buy a snack or soda. So like, don’t rob me unless you really want a snack or a diet coke.

If you were a tote bag what would you look like? I would have fringe!

Oilio Studio - Aqua Stripe Pillow (deflated)
Oilio Studio – Aqua Stripe Pillow (deflated)

Oilio Studio – Aqua Stripe Pillow: Imagine this puffy because I did not open this to get it puffed up to its full majestic glory. I don’t have a place for it at the moment as I am in between beach houses and my cat will think it is for her.

I find the colors very beach house like, and it is nice to have another non beauty item. I am not the type of chick who has accent pillows or really anything put together. Safe to say, I am not the target audience for this. I do like pillows though. Ask anybody!

I heard if you fall asleep on this pillow you are whisked away to the seaside where every move you make is curated!

Verdict: I have to stand back and give credit to Liz for doing another box collaboration. Her site is very popular and the expectations are super high. I can imagine some people opening their boxes and thinking “What no keys to a Beach House?!? What a Rip!!!”

I mean if I did a Beach House Box theme it would probably just have a few handfuls of sand, margarita mix, Cheetos, and a diary to log all the moments you regretted. Something tells me I won’t be asked for a collaboration any time soon…

Kloverbox always keeps it real, and they were very good about making sure we knew about shipping delays and that the items included wouldn’t kill us with poisons!

Thank you so much for delightful review and I can’t wait to get my box. I will use it all except tote bag, just swapped for PSMH ginormous one from summer box.

Thank you! The PSMH bag looks super nice. This bag is nicer then my other totes but I don’t invest much in such things. I bet that was some swap! I am sure this tote will swap super easy. I will try to give mine some use. I actually live by the beach so I really have no reason not to use it at some point…

I am pretty excited about the scrub because I NEED it

We are of the same people!

I would so love to do a box! It would be weird for sure. I don’t know how Liz from MSA does it. I would totally cry if people didn’t like what I put together. I’d have to send out more Cheetos I guess…

I keep trying to type a comment all morning! Here’s a quick comment. 2littlerosebuds has the bag that you want. She wishes she had a brighter colored bag. Maybe you can contact her? Is there a blogger swapcode?

I hope Kelly receives hers soon. I posted pictures of my box on MUT (MakeupTalkForum) yesterday. Will write more later.

Thanks for the lead! I love how one woman’s ok color is another’s want color! I’ll see about the swap. If there is a blogger code I don’t know it. I need to get more in tune with the community. πŸ˜‰

I hope Kelly gets hers ASAP. It sucks to wait!

Yes, best comment πŸ™‚ I ordered the same travel size cream when I was traveling for a few weeks earlier this year to conferences. Loved it πŸ™‚ I’m excited to see it in the box and that Subscriptionista is thinking of me. I will be using my TATCHA code on hand cream and maybe the body butter. I’m trying to be a good girl and not spend too much! The hand cream is a must. My TATCHA body butter is almost half way empty.

Thank you for the great review. MSA was my gateway to all things subscription box & I love the site, but sometimes things get really negative. I have this habit because it makes me feel good & I want to geek out with others who also feel good about it, sometimes all the negativity really kills the buzz. So, it was great to come here and read your blog today & I too would totally snap up any box collaborations you would do. Just make sure there is no sand mixed in with the Cheetos, then watch out for all my negative comments!

      June 24, 2015 at 3:07 am

Aww CiCi sorry people are bumming you out! I always wonder what would make everyone happy…nothing.

I will note to NOT mix sand with Cheetos. I think maybe I’d include a pillow case of a cat surfing…

        June 24, 2015 at 4:44 am

I feel bad for Liz and Kelly. It must be difficult to read negative comments about your box on your own blog. She wrote she was taken it to heart. I’ll be surprised if she’ll do another box.

It seems that there are 4 issues that keep coming up. 1. Shipping delays. 2. Tote price reduction 3. Perceived value 4. Items selected for the box.

I don’t know how much control they have over the shipping delays especially if fullfillment is outsourced. It takes tome to vacuum seal the pillow. I doubt they have control over the tote price. Would people feel different about the box if theprice wasn’t reduced? Or if the weekender wasn’t in PopSugar? I thought they did a great job on value. Eco boxes generally don’t have an insane high value. I found the selection comments interesting. Free market research. Would more people be happy with an out of the box type thinking in item selection? It’s hard to say.

          June 24, 2015 at 5:52 am

I JUST read all the comments and was blown away. I expected more of a positive vibe to the whole thing. I made the joke that people would be mad because they didnt get keys to a beach house and now I am sort of serious. I totally respect people being upset with anything. Goodness knows I have been outspoken about boxes and have had some cat fights on MSA myself.

Still I agree. Value. Ok, so the tote is on sale now. Does that change the tote itself? People are so into retail values of stuff. I am all about value to me. The box was not to my entire taste because I am like a giant 15 year old in a 33 year old body. I can still take a step back and see where they were going with this.

My other point is the $100 price. For me, I buy all this stuff because I pretty much can. I am not rich by any means, but my personality flaws have culminated in me being a cat lady with no kids yet or a family to feed. I don’t think anyone should EVER buy these boxes hoping for an actual value of $100 in the same way going and spending $100 on what you pick out.

However, my website is always open to different views. I will agree the comments are good market research. It feels like people don’t want beauty products. They would be happy with a candle, or what have you. From what I am reading they expect MSA to give them stuff they don’t get in other boxes.

I feel like boxes and reviews might need to get less “out of the box.” I mean, maybe everyone is ready to get weird?

          • PA Anna
            June 24, 2015 at 11:07 pm

You need to read the new comments and post a goat conspiracy theory. I don’t know if the conspiracy theory has merit. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn’t. Nothing surprises me when it comes to business.

I feel like I should comment, but don’t even know what to write at this point. Somehow I don’t think this is the reaction they were anticipated. I know people need to articulate why they are upset, but my heart breaks for Liz and Kelly for when they read the comments.

          • Subscriptionista
            June 24, 2015 at 11:27 pm

I posed about the surprise being worth something. I think I will post up the goat conspiracy! I am thinking that the goats have been the ones making the accounts to bash the box because there was nary a product with goat milk in it and so they feel slighted. It makes sense when you think about it.

I feel bad for them because I knew this would happen. When we read MSA Liz doesn’t put a ton of her personal stuff out there. That allows us readers to sort of fill in the blanks, true or not. also by putting value on items in a $ way it sets up her box for the same treatment.

People who are disputing charges… I just can’t…

            I posted the following:

Well, I for one, was thinking that this was a Goat Syndicate conspiracy. Has anyone noticed that not ONE item in this box has a product with Goat milk in it? Obviously the Goats are pissed and launching a smear campaign against this box.

I have been talking about this for month but I don’t think anyone can hear me from under my tin foil hat.

Very pleased … Not blown away would have loved one more item or two.
Got the green bag looks nicer in person and the stripes will coordinate well with a set of striped bags I recently got. Also my Burke box is coming today hope My blanket coordinates with the bag (at least with the stripes it would).
Much better than MSA02 which I kept but was not happy with MSA01 blowing me away that was an awesome box!

I was also thinking my box would include:
-A long sleeved very ugly shirt that your mom would nag you into wearing because “you know how you get burned”
-Pin the tail on the donkey (because why is this only a game played at birthdays?!?)
-A huge ugly straw hat with a scarf tie that you tie underneath you chin.

Sorry I’m late to the party.

I reveled on the Popsugar and Oui Please fiascos because I do enjoy drama and, after all, what is more frivolous than subscription box drama? But I am also very unhappy for Liz. People have been brutal and mean.

I really don’t know what all these people were thinking. Did they not think to spend some time looking at what sort of stuff Liz likes before ponying up those $100? As far as I can tell she’s my polar opposite. She likes the demure, understated, classy look. She adores overpriced luxe products and while she may not pay full price for them, she’d still pay much more than I would. There was so much gang ho about this box, that I actually thought about subscribing despite the price, but I knew that Liz’ style is so different from my own that I’d be disappointed if I got it.

As it happens, I think I would have liked it, though probably not enough for $100. The bag seems nice and I ordered one given that it’s on sale. I’m curious about the tacha. While I think the pillow is grossly overpriced, I’d love it to use in my patio lounger. It seems the perfect size. BTW, I went to the website and this is a baby pillow, which is why it feels like one. Moving on, the hand soap sounds great. I enjoyed the one I got from Kloverbox before and the dishwashing liquid I got from Little Lace Box has been my all-time favorite item from subscription boxes, so I’m all for the practical. And I’ll never say no to sunscreen.

The only thing I wouldn’t be thrilled with is the scrub. I honestly don’t understand why anyone would pay for a scrub. Really, they are the easiest thing to make in the world. Take some sugar, add some oil and a few drops of essential oil and voila, you have a scrub for a couple of dollars. The only problem is that without preservatives, you need to keep it in the fridge.

But anyway, this box is super Liz. The only thing it’s missing is a young adult book πŸ™‚

hey Nana! I think you’ve been making some good points! also I saw you on her thread and thought you were awesome!!!

I havent really gone back on her page after my tin foil goat hat comment but I will today. I think some of the comments she got were unfair.

Ok baby pillow? Does that just mean it’s smaller? I honestly don’t know lol

The spendy scrub thing made me laugh. I’m so lazy hahaha I agree though I’d never spend much money on one…

Now I’m worried about the sunscreen. I’ve been using it a little and I like it but now I need to look closer at the ingredients. I’m usually a little more lax on that stuff. I really shouldn’t be though.

The tote is nice. I’m going to use mine for work. My beach bags get gross in like no time flat so I use stuff I can wash. (Cheetos paws everywhere)

Lol I DO think the box is Liz and I was surprised about the book. Wouldn’t it drive people crazy if she put a huge Russian novel lol?!?

I thought NaNa’s posts were great on MSA. I agree that the box is quintessential Liz. I do love TATCHA although it is expensive. Yuzen had the hand cream in their box prior to Liz’s quarterly box which is how I discovered their amazing hand cream. I can see the difference in my hands when I use it.

The pillow is 14″x 10″ or is it 10″ x 14″? I always get that confused. I can be off on the measurements because it is fluffy. It reminds me of a hammock pillow. It’s perfect for my little guy.

Good point on the scrubs! I make scrubs too. I also enjoy trying out other scrubs especially if it is a scent I don’t have such as pineapple.

I haven’t checked out the ingredients in the sunscreen. I did read the comments on MUT. I can only imagine how crazy Liz’s blog will be if it was posted. I’m reserving judgement for now, but am disappointed it is not one of the ones on the EWG list. I really thought it would be.

LOL on the book. I didn’t think of that!

Liz just addressed it thank goodness! I rather they (Kloverbox/MSA) be a little more exact with topical products (in the future fingers crossed they do another collab) but it is sufficient. Not ideal but sufficient since I would be a hypocrite since I try to avoid stuff like [paraben] said but will use a [paraben, etc.] product if it was in a sub box.

I would be shocked if Liz ever put out another box, and I’d have a heart attack if she did one again with kloverbox. I think kloverbox actually lost business over this.

Still, she may do another one one day…

I received my June Prospurly box which I thought I cancelled. I lose track on cancellation dates and this was cancelled for financial reasons. The scrub that I received made me think of NaNa. It looks similar to the type of scrubs I make.

  9. June 26, 2015 at 5:34 pm

Wow, I had no idea about the sunscreen issue. I’m really glad you brought it up because it got me looking at sunscreens. Pretty much all the ones I have have an ingredient that causes hormonal disruption. Having two puberty-aged girls this really concerns me (me, not so much). So I’m going to have to make a explicit effort to find a safe sunscreen.

I don’t think that Liz realized the issue with these chemicals. She’d never mentioned them being a problem in other sunscreens. I know I didn’t. Kelly, however, should have known better.

    • June 26, 2015 at 5:40 pm

It looks like I jumped the gun. Liz posted this on the discussion:

‘Here is some information from Goldfaden about the SPF – hope it helps clarify:

β€œBased on the formula in Sun Visor, benzophenone is at 1% and bound to other ingredients allowing for the application of the product to sit on the surface of the skin and I am confirming that this formula DOES NOT penetrate the skin. I am confirming that we go through rigorous testing and follow all guidelines for safe sun protection allowable in cosmetics.” ‘

Benzophenome is allowed up to a concentration of 6% in US products. The purlisse sunscreen, for example, has 5%. As I don’t have the Sun Visor it doesn’t really matter to me, but I will go on the lookout for affordable sunscreens without hormone disruptors for my girls.

Yeah with young girls the last thing they need is this. You think an MD would try not to have it in his branded sunscreen.

I guess I can use it no problem then? πŸ˜‰

          June 28, 2015 at 3:03 pm

Regarding the sunscreen – I left a long comment on MUT and then deleted. I did send an email to Kelly that covered a few questions in my comment. This is the curse of editing FDA documents in my previous job.

          1. Where is the Organic Red Tea Extract? It’s listed on the box and in the description on the website. It is not listed in the ingredients on the box or the website. Check the “Light Treatment” on the website to see how it is listed in ingredients.

          2. Zinc Oxide is listed as an ingredient on the website. It is not listed on the box or the bottle as an ingredient.

          3. The description on the website says the red tea extract rejuvenates. Does it need to be absorb into the skin if it rejuvenates? Then how does the other ingredient in question, which works by being absorb into the skin, does not absorb into the skin.

I worked for a consulting firm in my previous job. This is the type of issues that I would look for that need to be corrected. Zinc Oxide is an active ingredient in sunscreen. Is it in this sunscreen or not? Is the Red Tea Extract included?

Zinc Oxide works by sitting on the skin, hence why there is a tint to Zinc Oxide sunscreens. The other ingredient (too lazy to type the name) rubs into the skin which is why there is no tint. Granted that they are using a low amount. I’m not a chemist, but I don’t understand how that ingredient works to block sunrays if it is sitting on the skin being binded to other ingredients. I’m sure it is a trademark secret for their company.

I never gave much thought about sunscreen beyond their rating on the EWG report.I’ve used much worse in the past when I did not know better. My biggest concern is the lack of ingredient match. That is the main reason why I won’t use it. I don’t even know what is truly in the formula,

Another thing with the Goldfadden is that the country it is made in is not listed. Anyone know?

This reminds me of BirchBox and the Beaver products. I was upset that month because I received the Beaver shampoo and conditioner which were large samples and made in China. I was already up 2/5 in products that I wasn’t able to use. The BB reps would never come out and say the products were made in China. They kept saying they might be made in China although it is listed on the sample made in China. One rep told me to read the description on the BB page. I did and then went through every single ingredient in the shampoo. It’s supposed to have avocado oils and aloe extracts. I couldn’t find it even though I spent a lot of time going through the ingredients. I emailed them to ask which ingredients had the avocado oils and aloe extracts. I was told someone will get in contact with me. No one did although they did send me replacement samples that were more to my liking.

I’m getting off my soapbox. Read your ingredients! Check the county of origin!

            June 28, 2015 at 11:30 pm

I don’t see anything wrong with using it as long as you have no allergies to any potential ingredients.

  10. June 26, 2015 at 8:27 pm

I definitely would. It’s probably much better than whatever you’ve been using anyway.

PA Anna, if you read this, did you see the comment I left for you about rosacea? I’ve been amazed at how well I’ve been controlling mine, even in the heat of the summer. This is really unprecedented for me.

Unfortunately I don’t know exactly which product or combination of products is holding it at bay. I thought it was the ibuprofen I’ve been taking, but I haven’t for a day now and the rosacea didn’t appear today despite all my sweating in the heat. In any case, here is what I’ve been using: http://marga.voxpublica.org/2015/06/controlling-rosacea-my-skin-care-routine/

    • June 26, 2015 at 8:32 pm

Oh, and I should say that for the last few days I haven’t been doing a full facial care program because it’s too damn hot in my house at night (no AC) so I start sweating within minutes of washing my face. So perhaps it is the face wash which is helping.

Wow, a few busy days I and sure miss out on it all πŸ™‚ I ended up with the green tote. I can’t use the sunscreen or the Tatcha due to allergies. Love the scrub, would not pay that much for it but I will enjoy it while it lasts. So an ok box for me, I like the tote a lot and the pillow seems ok. The soap is actually a real find for me, I am allergic to phenoxyethanol and my daughter is allergic to sodium benzoate and artificial colors. Finding a liquid soap both of us can use is very challenging, though I hope I can find one by the time this is done that is not $18 a bottle….

Hey, I did some checking up and I saw you posted this on other sites/blogs. I took the direct link out of your post because I gotta be honest that I’m a little worried you are from the company. Not trying to make a witch hunt here but your IP addy gives your location and when you post on a blog the person who owns the site can see that info.

If you are not from the company my profuse apologies I honestly just am calling it how I see it after half a bottle or so of red.

If you ARE from the box company then this is some crap I take super personal. I like your hustle but this blog is my little project I pay my own money to run and my own time to make happen. If you are a box company nothing is stopping you from contacting me in a legit way. I would hate to have to call a company out!

Also, if you are from that company your twitter needs to be fixed. The website listed is incorrect with a bad “www” go check it, you’ll see what I mean.

Again, if you are just a huge lover of this box the. Cool, I just noticed with the lightest of internet searches the same comments on other blogs. So, ya know where I’m coming from.

3 weeks of rain, heavy rain, thunderstorms and flooding. Now they are saying it should last until the end of the week.

No, no, no. Be a good kitty. Artistry Gifts is a class act. I’ve been following their gift wrap sub for many months on RAOS. I’m subscribed to their monthly box. I ordered the special summer sea box that you mentioned.

The owner offered me a refund when I saw spoilers for a one time box and knew I couldn’t use them. What sub service does that? I added the gift wrap sub to my regular sub and received the difference as a small refund.

Wow. Kelly moved!!!! Can you imagine sending out a regular box, a special edition box, and packing at the same time?

I’ve been enjoying my items. I’m almost finished the body polish and TATCHA. The tote has been in used several times. My younger son loves “his” pillow that he shares with his kitty. I gave the SunVisor to my sister because she’ll spray it on her face. I won’t because I am paranoid about my eyes.

I hope they do a fall box although I will be surprised. Liz can’t win in the items she selects. I remember people complaining about the inclusion of a drugstore moisturizer in her second Quarterly box. Then people complained about the expensive moisturizer in the Beach House box. I could never run a blog and read some of the comments that people wrote about a box I curated. It takes a thick skin.

I truly believe everyone has a right to like it or not, but it really was something she would put together. I SO want to put together a box. Mine would be SO absurd. She has an actual brand and so she just has to take the lumps. It does speak to her professionalism that she did not even give ONE catty reply. I would NOT be able to do that.

I think I just found my new favorite blogger =) I had a nice laugh reading this, and because my roommie and cat are used to me laughing randomly, neither of them stared strangely. I am impressed that you spend $100 during your two week wine budget! That’s a lot of boxed wine… heh.

To be honest, I would love a beach box that was full of margarita mix and Cheetos! Maybe a good beach read, a hat, some sunscreen, and some binoculars for looking at guys. Whales. Looking at whales…

You are too kind! Truth be told I can drink many a box of ye olde blogging juice. I need it for inspiration and I don’t have a problem. Ask my buddy Hemingway…

LOL I really should be a curator! It is funny now looking back at this sub box when it got bashed a lot… I use every item save for the pillow I gifted. Turned out to be really useful.

You know I am checking out your blog now. I will have to peep this over the week and see what kind of belly laughs I can get! Thanks again!!!
