Arcade Block Review – September 2015

Disclosure: I paid for this box because my teenager is broke.  There are no affiliate links in this post.

My older son loves the Legend of Zelda games. It is his favorite game franchise. Arcade Block decided to do a block around the Legend of Zelda theme ,so I had to buy it.

Subscription Box:  Arcade Block

Cost: $19.99 + $9.50 shipping/monthly, $53.97 plus shipping/3 months, $101.94 plus shipping/6 months.  Shirt size 2XLis $1.50 additional, 3XL is $2.50 additional, 4XL is $3.50 additional.

What to Expect: An exclusive t-shirt and 4-6 video game collectibles

Notes: T-shirts style selections are Youth, Guys & Gals Unisex, Fitted Mens, Fitted Womens.   A sizing shirt chart is listed on Nerd Block’s website. Click on “view sizing chart” to the right above additional shirt costs. I was not able to link to it because it opens as a pop-up window. The Nerd Block family ships from Canada. I found that the shipping cost, although outrageously, is similar to what other gamer/geeky boxes charge.

It’s a T-Takeover! View the box from the point of view of a Legend of Zelda 16-year-old fan! I’ll be around too as needed.

First look!
First look!

Sub Bella: Three Legend of Zelda items can be seen right away along with a Mario item.

Boo from Super Mario
Boo from Super Mario

T: Boo is from the Mario franchise.   He has space in his mouth to keep stuff. Boo is a ghost and doesn’t like Mario. There are numerous Boos in the Mario games.

Sub Bella – I make this face at Subscriptionista sometimes. Sssh! Don’t tell her. It’s only when she is acting like a she-wolf instead of a moon goddess that we all know and love.

Legend of Zelda Cucco
Legend of Zelda Cucco

T:  Legend of Zelda Cucco: They are the chickens in the Legend of Zelda franchise. They don’t serve any purpose to the quest, but are fun to mess around with your sword. You can attack a Cucco with a sword, and a flock of Cuccos will attack back.  Cuccos are a fan favorite.

Sub Bella – We should have placed a Camilla warning at the beginning. I hope Subscriptionista covered her eyes when reading this part.

Sub Bella: Galak-Z:  Arcade Block thoughtfully included a deal on turntables for those that threw theirs away back in the 80s. Recycling wasn’t big back then. The game is known for its music.

Sub Bella: What items do we know now that Pnut’s wee ones will not recognize later? We live in a rapidly changing world.

T: Legend of Zelda Hylian Shield: The shield picture above is almost always the second item that you acquire in a Legend of Zelda game. The shield first appears in the fifth Legend of Zelda Game: Ocarina of Time.

Sub Bella – He is a walking encyclopedia of Legend of Zelda knowledge.

Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker Shiart by ShirtPounch
Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Shirt by ShirtPunch

T: Exclusive ShirtPunch Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker T-shirt: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker -shirt is based on Link riding the King of Red Lions. Later in the game, Link finds out the King of Red Lions is the King of Hyrule. The image is a well-known image of the game. The writing below Wind Waker represents their language that grows in complexity throughout the games to reflect different time periods.

Sub Bella – He would have written paragraphs if I would let him. I keep reminding him that his audience is women that love beauty boxes.

T-shirt tag information

T: The shirt feels very soft.

Sub Bella: Soft shirts are important.

Link finding the Master Sword
The Hero’s Triumph

T: An important scene from  The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess is when Link finds the Master Sword. The Master Sword is the only item that can defeat Ganondorf, who is the main villain in this game and the franchise. Link is holding the Hylian Shield. It looks really, really cool and is an important scene. It is difficult to get the sword because you have to go through three whole dungeons to get to this point.  It’s going up on my wall.

Sub Bella: The picture looks strange because I was not allowed to take off the packaging. The artwork is T’s favorite item in the box.

Back
Back

Sub Bella: Russ Moore is the creator of The Hero TriumphHe uses art to evoke a gut reaction and nostalgia. My son absolutely loves this print and went crazy over it when he first saw it. He watched me carefully while I photographed it. It may be his favorite item ever from a subscription box.

Sub Bella – The power of art is not lost on my son’s generation.

Verdict:

T:  I loved it. Four great Zelda items for me to enjoy!

Sub Bella: It was worth the shipping charge. My older son loved the Legend of Zelda items. My younger son is happy with Boo. Any record lovers out there?

Don’t Leave!!!

Zelda Socks
Zelda Socks – NOT included in Arcade Block

T: Thank you for the Zelda socks! I love them.

Sub Bella:  Thank you for the thoughtful gift. He was hoping they were for him when I opened the package.

AWESOME Review! Camilla is taking a little beauty rest at the moment so she didn’t read anything. I will tell her to skip the review in case she get offended. lol

    Great review!

I think records are making a comeback. Though my husband, who was an avid record collector up until 2 or 3 years ago just put his turntables in storage and is starting to sell off his collection. So what do I know.

If I had to guess what the wee ones won’t recognize from this period, I would say smart phones. Pretty soon, we will all just have a chip in our brains!

I was shocked when I was in Hot Topic and saw 45s. I had no idea they were making a comeback until a couple of years ago.

Smart phones – that’s an interesting choice. My teen lives on his smartphone. He and his friends will gather together, take selfies, and text each other. Not may words escape their mouths.

Hahaha! That was a South Park episode! Good to know they were on point.

Having just read a review of this exact box on another blog, I appreciate your son’s explanation and review even more. Well done!

Thank You 🙂 He reads other reviews and hates it when they don’t mention the item is included because the new game/movie etc. is coming out. He feels about gaming boxes the way we feel about beauty boxes.

I have Hero Crate and Villain Crate coming this month. Both are characters that he feels quite passionate about and will have a lot to say.

    Great review T!

“I keep reminding him that his audience is women that love beauty boxes.” Why is it that the true statements are so funny?!

    • October 3, 2015 at 9:17 pm

So true. He was disappointed. How can we appreciate the Legend of Zelda items unless we understand the significance of each item. He’s very happy with the box.

Thank you for the T compliment. I will pass it on to him.

Love the review it brings back memories. I used to play Zelda and Mario. Now I have theme songs stuck in my head.
Here is something that no one knows about Pnut … I love Role Playing Games aka RPG (AND THAT IS ONLY CONSOLE GAMING SUBISTA)! I had to let that be known in case she had any ideas for me in that champagne forum idea of hers 😉
I digress, I do not remember Cucco. Could it be that Cucco was not in the first few games or maybe I do not remember. I would have totally messed with those chickens. Maybe this is where Fable (another RPG) came up with “chicken chaser” because you could chase chickens and punt them.
    My apologies to Camilla.

I will ask him tomorrow. He’ll be excited about the question. I’m sure it is among the one of many details he wanted included in the review. I remember playing Zelda and Mario in high school.

No Cosplay? Subscriptionista will be disappointed. Wait until she sees my Adore Me review. I bought a cute little Halloween outfit. It’ll be staying on the hanger.

No Cosplay. And totally anti-social no online gaming. The only thing closest to the two mentioned interests is that I am a big fan of The Guild (you can watch it via Netflix or YouTube).

I saw “Role Playing Games” and my brain immediately went to LARPing! Then you ruined the picture in my mind of a Ms. Pnut (looks like Mr. Peanut on Planters box except with long lashes & lipstick instead of a monocle) dressed up in a princess costume, carrying a sword & shield and fighting a person dressed as a dragon… Oh well.

      • October 4, 2015 at 6:36 am

        You RPG Heat?
Now I am wondering if I had an umlimted budget like Heidi Klum, who would I dress as …. The only one that comes to mind would be Morrigan from Dragon Age 3 (the first Dragon Age dress is a bit too spicy).

No RPG for me. But I watch a few TV shows that have had episodes about LARPing – including Supernatural. 😉
