First Peek
First Peek

I see a color that reminds me of celebrations! I wonder what the theme is for December. I loved last year’s December box and can’t wait to see what is in this year’s December Box. The box came early! It arrived on November 23rd.

December Theme
December Theme

I am joyless Sub Bella. I am under a lot of pressure in the real world. This theme upsets me because of what is going on in my personal life.

Information Card
Information Card

I am glad that Loved + Blessed wrote a reminder to flip over the card. It has more information about the gift of encouragement.

Laptop Sticker
Laptop Sticker

I feel worse when I read the sticker because I am not seeing the joy. I hope others find it encouraging.

Mini Poster
Mini Poster

I like the saying on the poster. It ties in nicely with the gift of encouragement.

Scripture Card
Scripture Card

I feel as though there is a dual theme about Joy in this box. Being joyful in all circumstance and making a joyful noise.

House Fires II
House Fires II

Storytime! One day on the way home from school, everyone on the bus could see a huge cloud of smoke. It grew worse and worse as we got closer to our bus stops. We could hear fire engines and had to detour. It looked like the fire was coming from the area where we lived. Many of us started to cry including me. I was in early elementary at that time. Turns out it was a four-alarm fire at a store. I’ve been frightened of fire since then. The CD cover gives me anxiety.

Song List
Song List

Housefires is a group of Atlanta, Georgia musicians. It has a live recording of Joy. The music is inspiring and encouraging.  I am giving it to my sister. I can’t even bring myself to open the CD. I am sure it is a wonderful CD. Let us know if you have listened to it.

Puss in Boots

Puss in Boots says, “Hang in there. Everything will get better.”

Verdict: My reaction to the box is atypical and not a reaction most will have. Christmas is a time of joy. I believe that this box will bring joy to my sister.

    *Hugs* for Sub Bella!

As a person who suffers from depression and anxiety, I think the message on the card is very inconsiderate (offensive even). Everyone certainly has the right to find joy in things, but to say that it’s as simple as choosing joy and just deciding to be happy is just plain wrong. We don’t choose to be sad, depressed, anxious, etc. Regardless of those emotions being brought on by experiences, illness, tragedy, or nothing at all. It’s so frustrating that some people just don’t understand, but to basically imply that a person is at fault for or the cause of their own sadness is false, cruel, and disheartening.

So take it one day at a time and try to focus on the little things that bring you joy, even if it’s only for a few moments. (I enjoy when that topic is featured on the site.) Please know that there are so many people out there who understand and struggle with their own sadness. Keep writing about what makes you happy and what brings you joy. It brings joy to readers like myself. 🙂

LC, I thought it was an okay sign, but after reading your comment I have to kind of agree. I also have mild depression and anxiety [and apparently ADHD], and when my boyfriend tells me to BE HAPPY when I am sad or laying in bed it doesn’t help. I don’t know how to describe to him I am just sad and don’t know why I am sad.

SB, I am sending lots of hugs and kitty fur from the west coast. It’s okay to curl up in a blanket and just lay there for a long time with a cat on your neck. It helps. Do you use a journal? Sometimes I like to write in one. Though, the other day I made the mistake of reading through one from college and I felt horrible after. It was about a year in college where life sucked. So, don’t reread journals =\ <3 subsitah love.

(((Onderria))) (hugs) – journals are great and even better when you go and burn them many years later without reading them…. I hate people telling others to be happy when they are depressed, just does not work.

I’ve kept journals before and I too have made the mistake of going back and reading them. I agree, don’t do it. Even the good things I wrote about made me sad. I wrote about jobs that didn’t work out, friends I have cut ties with, etc. I ripped pages out and threw them away… I think journals are best for dealing with things in the present. Write them down and get them off your mind, but listen to Onderria and don’t reread them. You’ve already learned from the experiences first hand. No need to relive them.

Thanks LC I need to post again…

Sub Bella I am sorry about the rough time. The weather is not doing anyone favors with it being dark faster, cold, and you having some physical pain issues. If I can give you a real hug I would right now. You are very sweet sister but I have told you that before. Hugs to you…

LC, I appreciate this post. I do think it’s a an oversimplification (and almost insulting) when I hear / see things that make it sound so easy to just “choose joy”…

Hugs and encouragement to Sub Bella & everyone who needs it right now!

Thanks for the responses. Positive thinking can certainly be helpful, but it’s not always enough and it’s not always possible. I was mostly bothered by the card explaining the theme. “We always have a choice.”

I actually had a tough time with that sticker too. I also deal with depression and a kid with serious medical issues so sometimes choosing getting through the day is enough. I need to listen to the CD, and I think I should frame that poster for my daughter, because she loves singing. And many days Joyful Noise is the biggest compliment I can give…. (Better than saying someone is strangling the cat….)
