Flaviar Subscription Review – December 2016

Flaviar is basically one of the coolest subscriptions out there if you like to try different type of spirits without the pressure of buying a full bottle or the shame of stealing nips from your parents more well stocked bar like you did in high school.

flaviar

Their older model of the subscription which I believe they have since updated gave out 5 samples of a spirit, however now it seems to be 3 spirit samples. This box of fun makes its way to your doorstep once a month and you can skip a month or cancel at any time. This is pretty much most guy’s dream come true lol Probably their loved ones dream as well, because when you visit there will only be the most awesome of spirits in the house! If you try something and like it then you can go to your local spot and buy it without the worry that your booze will have to go to disliked house guests. (Don’t act like you don’t serve gross booze to unwanted house guests I see you…)

Cost: $24.99 (First month is $18.99!)

The packaging is pretty awesome. I might be lame but when something obviously shows up from another country it seems a lot more special! Slovenia!!! My package came SUPER fast. Like faster than most boxes shipping from Florida.

I love the animals because they are both creepy and rustically cute!

Wow Fancy!

Tasting instructions and in depth tasting notes are included which is sweet because spirits have their own unique tasting rituals. I taste before I read the tasting notes so I am not swayed by what I read. Then I taste again to see if I can pick up on what I missed.

I am excited to be tasting rums! I studied abroad in the West Indies and spend a few months in Central America so rum is my personal jam when it comes to hitting the hard stuff. I have visited many factories and can smaller craft operations and have a huge respect for the product.

Ron Zacapa – Centemario 23: The tasting notes were spot on (indeed oddly spot on for every rum). The honey was really pronounced for me which made this powerful but also really sipable. I usually shy away from this type of rum, so am super glad I got to taste this and while it was not my personal fav, it was surprisingly smooth.

Perfect to sip by the fire while wondering why you feel so put together but your socks never match…

Dos Maderas – PX 5ro + 5ro: The sherry flavor is very forward which reminds me of like every time I have stayed at a bed and breakfast. Those places are big on the sherry! This one has a bit more burn, but it is satisfying and not a cheap burn by any means.

And I KNOW what cheap booze burn tastes like…

Ron – De Jeremy: A play on Ron Jeremy’s name. Ya know, the guy who was in all those porno’s you didn’t every watch ever… Anyway, the rum was really good and surprisingly so. I would never have bought this because well, I go for my Barbados standbys usually. However I would love to add this to my medicine cabinet my bar.

I thought the bottle would be a bit bigger…. 😉

Flaviar14

Kraken – Black Spiced Rum: Molasses and maple syrup what hit us first. There is a spice finish like a spice cake or rum cake. It is pleasant and makes this a wonderful after dinner sip for when you feel like you want dessert but you also feel like you want something to help you slur your words as you are delightfully prone to do!

I could release this Kraken every single night!

Flaviar12

Pyrat – XO Reserve Rum: I now think this Reserve Rum should be reserved for my mouth because it is both light and smooth. This is one of my favs and I wold never have EVER tried it without the subscription. It is made in the West Indies but it not one of my standbys. Well actually it is now. This is light enough to be mixed but super smooth and an easy gateway rum sipper. The banana flavor along with the cola make it feel like it is already its own mixed drink.

Maybe I am part pirate but this stuff shivers me timbers!

I used little shot glasses to pour just a very small amount for each one. I later used traditional tasting glasses.

Go home Bearcat, You're drunk...

Verdict: Flaviar is a really different subscription that I am glad I got a chance to try out! The sheer wow factor of it arriving from another country, and the really upscale packaging, coupled with the excellent curation and tasting notes, make this is a subscription that truly is a wow type of gift for yourself or someone who enjoys a little tipple. I love that they have humor and also make tasting in this manner accessible. Some can argue that it is on the pricier side, but to me it is a packaged experience. Perfect for a little stay at home date night fun to spice up a boring week!

This would make a great gift if Birchbox is not the gateway sub box addiction of preference. Also you make a good point that this is the kind of box you can open with friends to do a tasting. Lovely review as always Subista. You should do a wine subscription review I would like to read that. Your tasting notes are very thoughtful and it appears you have a great nose and appreciation whilst drinking of your drink.

I like rum. I am not sure whether my Russian Psychiatrist, Dr. Smirnoff, would say about this.

You know I love vodka but rum is my jam! you just get so much weird flavor. Though when I go get wild with the ladies I keep to vodka, usually a Grey Goose Pear with soda water… it tastes good and I always lean in and sort of slurr “Ish soooperrrr lowwww calorieeeeeeeee”

McBoyfriend loves the Kraken rum! How do these bottles compare to regular shot sized sample bottles? Also, I’m confused–you said it used to be 6, but now there are only 3 tasters, but there were 5 in your box. Was this a magical box?

Yay! I didn’t know they had a Rum version out. I am going to have to order for me and the hubs. We have both traveled a lot in Central America and love Flor de Cana. The cat pic with the rum means we are going to have to run a photo contest at some point. We have already discussed having a category for who takes the worst photos.

Flor de Cana is a staple and I have a full on collection! Ya’ll know your stuff! Noooo not to worst photos lol thats like calling out who has the most raggity nails!!!! I think we should give an award for “Probably the most posts written while sipping rum and or eating an entire cake”

      Who takes the worst photos?
      *looks around*

      *snorts*
This way you don’t see my raggity cuticles 😉
I need more sub boxes because I keep misplacing my cuticle moisturizing stuff!!!

The cat with the rum stands no chance against Benefit Chick (the packaging in Subscriptionista’s December Birchbox)!

That girl is too pretty for me to be happy for. Show me a furbaby with booze and I am in loveeeeee
