Saturday Trash Talk on Empties

Butt-Lei-for-2011-Trash-Art-Show-Maui.-16-by-22-all-recycled-materials

First up, a piece of ‘trash’ art from the Maui Art Of Trash show. This piece is by Elizabeth Keller. It is called Butt Lei

Now onto what is is my can. Well, it was a big week in my house. I was checking ingredients on a new foundation I have been trying by IT Cosmetics when I saw that it has Retinyl Palmitate in it. Now I should have known that a foundation labeled anti-aging had this in it but for some reason I was still shocked and promptly flipped out. I am currently 7.5 months pregnant. All I could think about as I was hysterical was that Retinols are not safe in many forms during pregnancy. Well, fast forward a week, many google articles and a Dr’s appointment and my hysteria was an over-reaction. There is no evidence that topical retinyl palmitate has any effect on an unborn child and my Dr even said I could continue using the foundation because it was so low on the ingredient list.

But, not one to waste a hysterical episode… I have decided to purge all of my non-natural make-up….. (I just can’t handle another flip out…..)

I gathered, sighed and lit a candle in remembrance of the good times we shared. I boxed it up all together and tossed it…..

This is my first round of purging. A lot of it is subscription box make-up. I now need to go through my lippy collection but that is going to be a little harder. The three new Stowaway mini-lipsticks I got in the December PSMH are so pretty and fun and I couldn’t throw them away yet…… 🙁

Here are a few more items:

Wildfire smoked salts
Status: Empty
Box: Prospurly

Loved these yummy salts! They were really smokey

Sel Magiq
Status: Empty
Box: Hamptons Lane

These were a mixture of sea salt and herbs de provence. I sprinkled them on everything under the sun they were that good. I am going to start ordering it by the case.

ToGoSpa
Status: Empty
Box: PSMH

I had totally forgotten these were in my fridge until I saw Subscriptionista’s review of their box. I had to pull them out and put them on and then read her review. They are magical just like her.

Beauty Protector lotion:
Status: There may be some left but it is in the trash
Box: Birchbox

For some reason I hate really girly lotion. This stuff made me feel like I was made out of sugar. I used it once. It had to go. I don’t like feeling like I smell like dessert….

Now, on to OPT (Other Peoples Trash). You down with OPT?! Ya you know me!

Here is Heat 7918’s trash can:

Here are my empties from the past 2 weeks.
BioRepublic Aloe Rescue Revitalizing Fiber Mask – I enjoy sheet masks, thank you Birchbox! This one was pretty good although I don’t generally notice much difference among sheet masks.
In front of the mask package, you may notice an empty “Eyes” packet from ToGoSpa – these were Pomegranate and even though I didn’t finish all 3 in the pack yet (1 down, 2 to go), I wanted to share because I previously shared my thoughts on the Coconut Eyes which were slipping & sliding all over my face no matter what I did. I’m happy to say that the Pomegranate stayed in place – yay!
My last one-time-use empty (which I actually did squeeze 2 applications out of) is the Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream Moisturizer from my mostly crappy WalMart box.  Olay stuff is always sweetly scented but I kind of like the smell… and like most of their creams, this felt nice and moisturizing.
Julep Mint Condition Pedi Crème – This foot creme is good but not great. The ingredients list looks really good (alpha hydroxy acids, shea butter, coconut oil, essential oils, and vitamin E… no parabens or sulfates) so not sure why it didn’t wow me? But it was good and I loved the minty scent! I love mint!! (P.S. You should never pay full price for anything at Julep – they always have deals & coupons!)
Sanitas Lemon Cream Scrub – From one of my favorite boxes… BeautyFix! I used this on my face, neck & décolletage twice per week in the shower for some manual exfoliation.  This worked about the same as most exfoliators do on me (good) and the scent is very refreshing.
Embryolisse Lait Creme Concentre – This tiny sample is a moisturizer that I got from BeautyFix and this was my second one. It’s also good but not great – at least not for my dry skin in the winter! It isn’t heavy and absorbs quickly – would maybe be a good daytime moisturizer during summer or for someone with “normal” skin.
Tatcha Soothing Silk Hand Cream – I ordered this directly from Tatcha for 50% off thanks to a post here on Subscriptionista several months ago. The color is a beautiful purple (my fave!) and moisturized my hands quite nicely. Unfortunately, I don’t like the smell. 🙁  I don’t HATE it and it’s not crazy strong and doesn’t lasts super long… so I was able to use all of it at least. That’s pretty rare for me with a hand cream if I don’t like the smell because I’m really picky about scents especially on my hands!
Last and definitely not least: Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup from Herbal Bliss – these were AWESOME and I’m loving Herbal Bliss something fierce! These came a few days before New Year’s Eve in the December box so I brought them to our NYE Party and they were a huge hit! I included a picture of a hibiscus in my champagne glass so you can see (below) – they looked so pretty! The syrup added a little sweetness and made the drink pink. I would have never known about this or bought it for myself so I couldn’t be happier – I may have to buy this and other times from the website.
P.S. Yes, that is a Buffy picture (BtVS forever!) in the background. It’s the one from FanMail that I recently framed and put on the desk in our home office… I shared my husband’s reaction in the comments on  recent “Sparking Joy” post.  🙂
And we leave you with this:

Good luck with your natural product journey. I switched a few months ago and it was really tough to throw away so much, but there are so many great alternatives out there and sub boxes are available to help you get started. I love the Think Dirty app to help me in determining which products are right for me. Also love Beauty Heroes, Goodbeing and Petit Vour. And, I have been stalking Vegan Cuts and La Ritzy reviews. Happy Saturday!

I am going to check out that app!!! I love Petit Vour and I too long for La Ritzy again

Yes! I canceled my Ipsy and so of course I have been spending way to much time looking for a box to fill its place. I noticed there are not many boxes that focus on just makeup. It is mostly skincare with some makeup tossed in. But don’t worry I will waste hours continuing to look!
Have you found a good foundation? I ordered two different samples of natural ones this week.

I love what you are doing with the Saturday empties! Time is flying by. I can’t believe you are already 7.5 months pregnant. I recognized a bunch of items in your trash including my beloved Smashbox lippy from PopSugar Dec (?) 2014. I understand why you threw everything out.

Heat did a great job! I love the hibiscus flower syrup shot. Great use of Buffy’s picture!

I think my hardest toss will be my smashbox mascara. It is beyond fabulous. I am working on letting go….. I will update on things I find.

Retinol is basically just Vitamin A, so it’s not really “unnatural” at all (although yeah, not recommended in large doses for pregnant women!) I’m all for making sure there are no irritating, sensitizing, or unnecessary ingredients in my products, but “natural” may not be the best line to draw in the sand, as so many natural things can be deadly (belladonna lipgloss? No thanks!) and “unnatural” can save lives (yay vaccines! Yay birth control pills! Yay for the plastic in the helmet that saved my life when I was thrown from a horse and landed on my head!).

Totally! I still go to Jack in the Box for Jalapeno Poppers.
And in all my hysteric searching I looked at my vitamins and the form of vitamin A in it is retinyl palmitate in the dose of 4000 units.

Mmmmmm jalapeño poppers….now I have a strong need for some!

Are the Stowaway minis the creme lipstick? If so, they’re 100% vegan (according to the Stowaway website), so you still get to play with them!

Oooo I am hopeful!! I am going to check right now!!

I just used a Green Tea Detox mask the other night while I was taking a bath. My boyfriend walked in on me and my cat was staring at me from her perch atop the toilet, whilst I loofa’d myself with a scary mask out. He slowly backed out of the room. Haha, I thought it actually kinda worked! I’ve always been skeptical of anti-aging products, and last year when I noticed my first wrinkles I started using some. Hasn’t really done anything to the forehead creases that were there, and since I’ve gotten more. But, this mask actually made them fade a bit for one day… perhaps I’ll have to start hoarding them! Though I did notice on the BioRepublic site that their Instagram feed was filled with BB pics with masks, so fingers crossed!

Great empties Heat! Who replaced Buffy lol?

  8. January 16, 2016 at 2:05 pm

Mailbox Junkie please do not throw out your candles next!
Keep the mascara they get thrown out so fast. Sooner than 3 months my eyes get twitchy and I never seem to have a lack of an ever building army of mascaras. I like Well3 (sp) mascara its a little cute natural mascara BB whore. You might like Bare Minerals powder foundation I have some samples I think it looks nice on me but my cousin uses it and it is like an infomercial it covers her blenishes, undereyes and give her a flawless look. Don’t inhale lol.
