Abuela Mami Subscription Review – February 2016

Every now and then I pop over to Beeju Boxes blog and do a little guest blogging. When I first started reading about subscription boxes her blog was one of my go to blogs because I felt she had the humor I needed and always got such interesting things! I am forever a fan girl to all the sites that got me into blogging in the first place, so its nice to help out and share. :)

This time I delve into a Cuban Snack Subscription! Yay!

I wonder if a cuban cigar sub box was created whether their sales would go through the roof!

Like the review hope they get more business (I am assuming that this is a new sub since we can now get stuff from Cuba)….

It is new but they source items from other places cuz we still don’t trade with Cuba. It’s legit though. The more I look into it the more I’m like wow this is pretty darn cool!

I’m sorry, but I find the name of this subscription disturbing. Maybe it’s a Cuban lovey name (for whom?), but wouldn’t you be creeped out by a box called “Grandma Mommy”. It either implies some sort of incestuous situation or a tragic story of someone being raised by their grandma (which, coming from a country where this happened to many kids after their parents were “disappeared” by the military, is particularly disturbing).

Now I find it all sad. ๐Ÿ™ I didn’t even think about it. I know what each work means but I guess just didn’t take the time to really sit and think.

You can read about the origin of the name here.

“I grew up in Miami and was up in New York for work. I realized it was hard to find Cuban stuff,” he says. “I went to the supermarket to find a cafetera, a Cuban coffee pot, and couldn’t find one. My mom got rid of hers, so when she came to visit she brought me one from my grandmother. It was kind of like an abuela/mami care package. When I moved back down to Miami earlier this year, I thought ‘I’m sure there’s people who like Cuban culture that live elsewhere,’ so I decided to make abuelamami.com.”
