January Box Budget Breakdown

Shut-up-and-take-my-money

Here at Subscriptionista.com, we buy a lot of boxes. You may have noticed……

Occasionally we get free boxes to review but mostly it is our hard earned dollars that we throw around.

So what do we spend?

Here Onderria and I breakdown what we spent in the month of January on Subscription boxes.

Mailbox Junkie January Box Budget:

Untitlebox budget

So I am trying to keep my box budget at $100 a month. As you can see, I failed.

Here is my breakdown:

I canceled Ipsy.
Modcloth is a one time purchase. I was able to gift the jacket I got and sell the shoes to a FB friend for $10 (What I paid for them)
Pur Minerals is a one time purchase.
Sun of a chic-I will not renew

Onderria January Box Budget:

boxbugOn

Here is her reflection:
January was a little spendier than I expected–

Two boxes charged me on the off month of a bimonthly sub, I forgot to cancel HelloFresh, and I added a new sub.

Survey Says:
Whew! Sharing your box budget makes you feel really vulnerable. What do you spend? Do you want to share?

I too want to keep my box budget to $100. I have gotten so addicted!!! Currently I have Birchbox, Buddibox, Goddess Provisions, Yogi Surprise, BeautyBox and Allure. I know I may be forgetting one or two, I did just cancel FabFitFun.

    • February 18, 2016 at 9:14 am

I like to have a number in mind so that I at least try to stick to it. I have really wanted to try Yogi Surprise jewelry box!
I realized last night that I forgot to add 2 in the I prepaid for!

    February:

Olfactif: $14 (due to promo coupon)
    BeautyDNA: prepaid via GiltCity deal
A Horse Box: free gift from interacting with them on Facebook a lot (they had no idea I’d review it lol)

    The poor life!

    • February 18, 2016 at 9:16 am

Those deals on Giltcity and groupon can really save you money! Do you have a blog Ally? I would love to read what they send in a horse box!!!

      • February 18, 2016 at 9:26 am

        Yep, a totally neglected-half-the-time blog at honeyanddreams.blogspot.com

        • February 18, 2016 at 12:50 pm

I love it! The horse box looks awesome. I really appreciate niche boxes!!

          • February 18, 2016 at 3:57 pm

I’m the same way. I wish I had more money because there are so many niche ones I’m interested in (like one that sends out Islamic scholarly books!….I have a degree in Religious Studies and Anthropology).

    February:
    Yuzen $33 quarterly.
Birchbox $7.33 I have a 20% off prepaid yearly membership.
    Total for February $40.33 Yay!
When I come clean, I admit that in 2015 I spent around $2500 in sub boxes and LE boxes. I have a ridiculous amount of products I have to use, my mantra for 2016 is “I’m not a hoarder, I’m really not a hoarder”. My husband has a way different mantra, but he did love his Birchbox LE smarter workout box.

    • February 18, 2016 at 9:16 am

When you look at the total number per year then you take a gulp… that is why I am trying to budget! It at least gives me something to aim for. I did all my christmas presents out of sub boxes so I rationalized part of it away. And since none of my friends and fam do sub boxes they were stoked!

  4. February 18, 2016 at 7:06 pm

I love this! I still can’t bring myself to share how much I blow on on this stuff.

Lmaooo. (Stomping feet) Not Far!!! Jk

      • February 19, 2016 at 4:09 pm

It totally ISNT fair but if I wrote it all out then it would be…real……I often cannot believe how much I spend on this stuff. But I could be using for drugs right? My addiction isn’t so bad then….

    • February 18, 2016 at 9:43 pm

Well just confess to Sophia and we will count that

      • February 19, 2016 at 4:07 pm

Sophia resents every dime not spent on her kitty palace. Camille the Hen understands but says I need “church.”

    February
    Hemper box $30
    One time purchase
    Birchbox $10
    Sephora Play $10
    Cannabox $30
    Valentine gift
    Fortune Cookie Soap box $19.99
    Boxycharm $21
    Need to cancel

    …$120.99
I think I have a problem. I do try to sell the things I don’t particularly like so it balances out (that’s just what I tell myself)

    • February 18, 2016 at 8:33 pm

Hey Alyssa! What are Hemper Box and Cannabox? Sounds like a weed box 😉 But I live in WA so basically most of the people I know smoke. I mean, I know how to use Google, but it’s nice to see why people pick boxes too!

Where do you sell stuff? I was thinking about looking into selling instead of swapping, though I’d rather just get rid of a lot of the stuff I’ve accumulated! Thanks for sharing your budget =D

      • Alyssa
        February 18, 2016 at 9:20 pm

You’re right 🙂 they send monthly themed smoking goodies. I don’t get them every month, but when there is a good spoiler or theme I can’t resist. They usually consist of a quality glass piece, lighters, papers, smoking essentials and sometimes a cute extra. This month’s Hemper came with the sweetest heart shaped tin candle. SilencedHippie on YouTube curated it and she has an unboxing on her YouTube page.
Cannabox is more of a novelty quintessential stoner box. Cannabox’s quality is definitely lower than Hemper, with more “filler” items, but it’s what my boyfriend wanted for Valentine’s Day.

I usually sell on online resell shops like poshmark or mercari ( which I think is only available as an app). I haven’t really found any good places to swap items so I try to bundle items and sell them as my own “beauty boxes”

        • February 18, 2016 at 9:41 pm

Have you tried Glam Bot for makeup? I havn’t tried to sell anything on there but I have looked over their website. I think it is a consignment sort of deal.

            February 20, 2016 at 8:18 am

I haven’t but I’ll sure check it out. I have hoards of makeup and skincare that’s just laying around.

      • February 18, 2016 at 9:42 pm

Onderria I am thinking you need to review it! Living in WA and all!! I love that I have learned about several new boxes just from this post!!

        • February 18, 2016 at 10:51 pm

Hah, MB I am a total dork and don’t smoke. I absolutely hate the smell, and the one time I tried a cookie I got SOO ANGRY! Haha, I think that’s the opposite of what’s supposed to happen??

Alyssa, I love gems and found this awesome Seattle artist who makes these fantastic mugs but also cat pipes! If I smoked I’d definitely hit it with a cat.

          • February 19, 2016 at 10:58 am

Haha! I just checked out here Etsy shop and she is completely sold out! I want one of those mugs!

          • February 19, 2016 at 11:15 am

I did too but they start at $150! She’s been sold out for a while though, so I think any new stuff she had sold out again quickly!

          • Alyssa
            February 20, 2016 at 8:17 am

! I need one of those pipes. I don’t even think I could bring myself to smoke out of it. It’s just that cute.

    • February 18, 2016 at 9:38 pm

I totally want to try Fortune cookie soap box!! Now see I know I have a problem!! Don’t they say the first step is acceptance!

      • Alyssa
        February 20, 2016 at 8:24 am

Lol acceptance is the first step. And I’m also a total enabler because I think subscriptions are still open for the Summer Fortune Cookie soap box andddd they have a Pure Imagine Easter soap box out for presale. Which is Willy wonka themed :0

  6. February 19, 2016 at 1:14 pm

Does it count in the budget if most of these are prepaid subs? These are the boxes that I received in January:
    Ipsy
    Birch Box
    Birch Box Man
    The Believer’s Box
    Love + Blessed
    PopSugar
    Serendipity
    Peaches & Petals
RedLine TShirts (a monthly vintage drag racing Tee)
    Boxy Charm
    Glossy Box
    Hello Fresh
    For the Faithful
Mystery Tackle (bass fishing tackle box)
Gulp. There might have been some LE boxes, but I can’t remember and I’m not telling. I only keep a few items. The rest I send to women going through hard times via my ministry, the caring crate.

    • February 19, 2016 at 4:10 pm

Thank you for sharing and I feel you on most of those!!!! (I don’t fish but I have thought about it as a gift!)

    • February 19, 2016 at 10:22 pm

Omg who knew there was a bass fishing box!!! That is so awesome! Turning you box collection into a ministry is so cool. I know you bless so many people with your boxes!!

      • February 20, 2016 at 12:05 am

Mystery Tackle is great! You fill out a very detailed profile on the type of fishing that you do. They have tackle for everything: fresh water, salt water and brackish. We mostly bass fish, and we have really enjoyed the boxes. They also send you very informative articles and tips by email. The value of the box is amazing! There are usually 6 or 7 items. Last box had a 9$ spinner bait, a pack of soft plastic lizards, a pack of soft plastic worms, a small pack of 15# line, a pack of hooks and a couple of weights. Everything is very high quality.

      Hi my name is Pnut…

        February 19, 2016 at 10:17 pm

        Hi Pnut,
I highly recommend better box, they have a whole new take on boxes. They give you little things to do during the month to help us “pay it forward” …It’s got an awesome concept.

        • February 19, 2016 at 10:28 pm

Ok I just googled it!! How is it? It looks super fun and right up this hippie girls alley

        • February 19, 2016 at 11:07 pm

Saw it! That would be lovely for my father-in-law ne likes that kimd of stuff and has the time to really focus amd enjoy it. I will have to look out for a code and get it for him if one appears “just because”. Thank you Sherry 🙂

    • February 19, 2016 at 10:26 pm

I wanna know what Little Wilde thing is?! Also I really really want to sub to Yogi Jewelry surprise! I love that most of their stuff is natural stones.
If you had to pick a favorite which one would it be?

      • Sherry
        February 19, 2016 at 10:51 pm

Little Wilde thing is boho jewelry! You should do Yogi surprise jewelry …. I love that one also I think they are still offering it for 22? It’s well worth it! And the spoiler for March is pretty if you haven’t already looked you should! Better box was great you do little quest like things and then they reward you!! I really think the whole world could use this right now…..lol
My favorite is Yogi surprise …I have been trying to decide which one to keep cause I gotta stop some… I have to use up and finish giving away what I have… Then maybe start with one or two and I have even been playing inny Minny Mitty mo( I think that’s how it went…??) ….lol …. to see out of my top 3 which to keep….atleast with the better box your helping out others sooooo I can justify that one…..but starting March I’m gonna have withdrawals

    Here you go:

Ipsy – Last month of a 1-yr sub (my first sub box ever) and then no more
Birchbox – 1yr sub with 40% off for Black Friday
BoxyCharm – Subbed only for the Revealed Smokey Palette then cancelled
Kloverbox – 2nd month of 3mo sub with Black Friday deal, 25% off?
LaRitzy – December 40% off then didn’t cancel in time for Jan – I love LaRitzy though!
Herbal Bliss – 2nd month of 3mo sub with Black Friday deal, 10% off – my new FAVORITE box!
TomBox – December 50% off then thought I canceled but didn’t… cancelled now
ToGoSpa Mini – Signed up before Christmas for $25% off – this box used to be $20 but now $25
Graze 4 flapjack box – Recently increased all 4-pack boxes to 8-packs, but can still get only 4 flap-jacks
    L w/F – 1yr sub with deal around Christmas for 15% off
Naturebox – 3-pack once per month
Treatsie – One month only with deal then canceled
Play! Sephora – Yes, I’m lucky!
2 Target Beauty Boxes – Refresh and Renewal – $7 each

If you only count the ones I actually paid for in January, I spent $139.98. If you also count the monthly cost of the pre-paid ones (no Susie, I don’t think we have to!) – it was $200.63. However, I further rationalize b/c there were 2 boxes that I meant to cancel and did before February + plus canceled a couple others for February and chose not to buy the February Target box – so February will be lower!

Also, the snack boxes are part of our grocery budget – my husband eats more of the snacks than I do and I’ve asked him if I should cancel any of these and he said “no.” 🙂

      L w/F – Love with Food.

That was a little more painful that I expected – I thought I was doing pretty good! LOL. The list of boxes that I WANT probably equals about $3000/month so… not bad.
