Open Sesame!

Part of subscription box success for me is the packaging. This box wins for cuteness and color scheme. And why yes, that is recycled newspaper as packaging. #winning!

The info card/instructional details:

Project theme: Gem Magnets

20160320_095145-1This is my second Hippie Hobby box and one of the things I appreciate about this box is how detailed the instruction booklet is for all levels of crafter. Just open the box and dive in. You can’t fail!

If only my life plans were as easy to follow and accessible as these directions!

The Items:

Mod Podge 2 fl oz

8 glass gems

8 magnets

Brush

6-8 pages of an old book (See Below)

Mini Super Glue

Be warned. I will attempt to use the term Mod Podge as many times as I can in this review because I freaking love the stuff

The old book pages included were from a sewing manual from the 70’s. How cute are these kids outfits?!
1st step: Choose what you want behind the gem! You could use the pages they included or you print photos or use magazine images. I chose to try out the some of the pages they sent.

The Austin Powers theme song was playing in my head due to these knee high socks and mary janes…

Step 2: Trace magnet over image

I colored my picture in to add some pizzaz but you can obviously leave it plain.

Step three: Apply Modge Podge to back of magnet and apply cutout.

Applying Mod Podge to oneself does not result in Austin Power babe coolness it only leaves you with sticky flaky fingers…..

Side note: Be ready to trim the image down from the original traceout.

Why yes, I do need a manicure. Thanks for noticing…

Step Four: Apply Mod Podge to back of image as well.

I love the term Mod Podge 10 times better than the term “festival style”

Another selection:

I thought it was a great idea to include the cool retro book pages.

I also debated on cutting up some cool anatomy books I have. Cuz, who doesn’t want a magnet of a cirrhotic liver?!

Dress and bonnet girl is staring wistfully at short cute bob and pants girl thinking, “Well, I do declare, she looks absolutely groovy!”

Step Five: Apply dab of super glue to back of glass gem and glue down magnet.

Done!

Here are my magnet sets:

Festival Style (Set of Three)

And here they are mixed in on my fridge with my other magnets:

The other magnets have let them into the cool kid cliques and they are adjusting quite well!

Each month Hippie Hobby also includes a bonus craft:

Project theme: Cupcake Toppers

Here are the materials:

I will confess that I have not gotten to this Bonus Craft yet! However, it looks super cute and easy. Would be fun theme for a book party!

Survey Says:

I really enjoyed this box. The magnets are really strong and look super cute on my fridge. As opposed to their January box that I reviewed, I feel the value was great for the March box. The kit included a set of eight gems/magnets so you could easily make some for yourself or some to share. I also like that the craft included is pretty simple and is not a huge time commitment. From both boxes that I have tried, you could pretty much do the whole craft in about an hour and a half depending on how detailed you wanted to be. Their focus is upcycled, recycled or natural materials. This month gives you some great ideas on how a little Mod Podge can open up a world of fun for up-cycling printed works.
