Organic, sustainable, and local produce whenever possible.

Kick Back and Get Comfortable:

Subista was so kind to give me a gift certificate to Home Chef. I must show my cooking skills to everyone. Well you all are in for a surprise! Because I have a hungry hubbie with three growing picky Pnut people (myself included), I need to fashion out our meals to accommodate everyone. So you will likely see on our IN REAL LIFE, one meal serving as planned by Home Chef for my husband and the other serving done Pnut style. I have not seen a review like this so I think it would be a nice perspective on how to stretch meals to feed a family of 2 adults and 3 little Pnut people. Of course, this would not work if my Pnut people were teenagers lol.

Here is a peek of the unboxing of the recipe!

And here is everything laid out before I started to cook.

With exception of the meat, because it was murdered the next day after delivery. Seriously, there was a murder in my refrigerator.

The Scene Of The Crime

Does this mean that my steaks are undead?

I sent an email with the attached picture to home chef stating that my steak had been murdered. The Customer Service person was very professional (she either had no sense of humor or blasted my email to everyone at Home Chef) and gave me credit towards my next box delivery.

I substituted Costco steak cut in two pieces as the substitute.

Are you measuring my steak? heh.

Here is the front sheet of the recipe card!

And here is my “drink” mix (The Spice House Hot Cocoa Mix). I mixed my drink mix with some almond milk and a touch of Home Chef’s Heavy Cream.

image

Ummm… do not even try to drink Home Chef’s cooking wine.

I semi-followed the directions to go with the flow!

I started to Prep the Ingredients:

Sliced and turned my shallot into semi-thin julienne strips. Dominated over the chives by mincing them.

I Made the Cauliflower Side:

image

I brought a pot of salted water with the cauliflower florets to boiling point then shut off the heat once boiling for awhile so it cooks while I tended to my Pnut people. I strained the cauliflower and placed in bowl. I added butter (yes), bleu cheese (yes!), heavy cream (YES!) and chives (NOM)! I mashed the ingredients and try not to nom it all whilst cooking.

Heavy Cream is a beautiful thing.

Home Chef has convinced me that I should always have Heavy Cream in the home and I will start to freeze any amount in ice cubes rather than having leftovers spoil. I NEED to make mashed cauliflower with bleu cheese and heavy cream again!!!

I Cooked the (“unmurdered” Costco) Steaks:

I added (unseasoned) steaks to a sprayed olive oil pan on medium-high heat. Home Chef wanted me to season the steaks but I watched too many Food Network and Travel Channel shows where they just cook the steaks without seasoning and added it later. Timed 3 minutes, flipped, timed 3 minutes, flipped, and turned off the heat and plated the steaks.

I Cooked the Green Beans:

I added more oil to the same pan with the green beans. I cooked them beans for 5 minutes (they were still green) then plated.

Made the Sauce Robert (poor Robert):

image

I deglazed the same pan by adding butter. I added shallots. I then added the non-drinkable white wine (do NOT drink it was NASTY definitely a cooking wine). Added demo-glazed stuff that was in the pot (I test tasted it and approved) and skipped the Dijon. I added Sauce Robert to plated steaks.

VOILA!!!

VERDICT:

Another hit with Home Chef! There were Green Bean leftovers. I wanted to re-create the cauliflower weeks later but my efforts were added because my cauliflower had other ideas (it decided to grow its own compost) instead of being nommed. I plan to retry my efforts again with cauliflower. The wee ones ate a bit of steak, there was some nibbling at the green beans, and they picked at the cauliflower goodness.

Yes, baking is more of science where directions often need to be followed so I can do that! Cooking is more of an art…

Haha, but the truth is sometimes magic happens and then sometimes the food is horrible. I once made this salad that me and my husband still get grossed out about when we remember it!! Or I have ruined entire pots of food right before company comes over……

I just made it yesterday! Pipsqueak, who ate her “white broccoli” with the Hamburger Helper (yea I know I am fancy I added some fresh chunks to cook with the pasta) proclaimed how much she loved it. She did not care for the Home Chef style side even without the blue cheese. I am going to make mashed califlower with the leftovers. She will probably not eat it unless its smooth. I learned that recently with Peanut Butter. I digress.

Go you. It’s like Black Friday etiquette if its in your cart its yours. Move alomg ladies….
