Sunday Morning Coffee Talk- Life Outside The Boxes

Meru Expedition, Garwhal, India
Meru Expedition, Garwhal, India

Well, I have coffee in hand and am here today to ask you dear readers about your life outside of sub boxes.

Yes, we all have to come up for air sometimes!

Ok so what is happening in your life right now that is or isn’t interesting?!

Here is my week recap…

Interesting:

I love hiking and mountain climbing so this week I got to watch (for free) on Amazon Prime a documentary called Meru. I also have a small obsession with documentaries. It tells the story of three climbers who set out to climb the never before conquered peak of Meru in India. Watch the trailer:

If you need inspiration this week about perseverance (I did!) then you need to watch this documentary. It is so so good!

Un-Interesting:

I have done 10,000 loads of laundry this week. Between spit-up, poop and a messy toddler, it has been an epic laundry week. Most of it isn’t folded……………

Alright, What about you guys??

Any and all levels of interesting or not interesting are welcome!!

Did you drink a ton of wine and huff cat hair? Read a good book? Did you do house chores? Get in an altercation at Whole Foods? Did you find a new box? Get a flat tire?

Last night I took all of the loose pigments that I had and pressed them into pans! I bought a Z Palette when Amazon had that luxury beauty deal going on. I had a couple of refill pans that a box sent. So I decided to get the palette and finally put those loose shadows to use. My 11 year old granddaughter helped. It was really messy, but super easy and we laughed like loons the whole time. They all came out so pretty! Now I’m hoping for more loose powders to come in future boxes! Even if I liked the colors of the loose pigments, I never used them because I ended up with shimmer powder everywhere. Pressing them is the perfect solution!

    • April 10, 2016 at 10:58 am

I am intrigued!! I feel the same way about loose powders. Also what a totally fun project to do with an 11 year old. I deem your week Interesting!!

Girl you know I’ve been huffing cat fur! Ugh so it turns out I’ve been in that funk before because my body was fighting being sick and I finally got knocked down. Weird symptoms from laryngitis to a fever and cough. I feel gross but way better today. All thanks to that 100% pure cat hair.

I can’t imagine the Landry. I have to do mine and it’s not even that much but I’ll let it pile up.

Guurrrrrrlll, you gotta let your body rest so it can recoup and get better! Cat naps with cats are suggested!

    • April 10, 2016 at 11:55 am

Maybe it is time to lay off the cat fur? Your lungs probably look like this:http://www.shoptiques.com/products/anna-sui–adrienne-landau-mongolian-lamb-coat

      • April 10, 2016 at 11:59 am

I don’t see the pic but I imagine it’s like a fluffy set of lungs? Hahaha I can’t as I’m addicted to the huff. Seriously my cat smells so good!

        • April 10, 2016 at 1:28 pm

I redid it with the link… It is a coat Onderria found on Shoptiques

Haha! That coat is just… so much. I can imagine looking like a wet dog rainbow in Seattle with that.

          • April 10, 2016 at 10:25 pm

I found so many entertaining things I wanted to save and post about on here of things I could have bought with my shoptiques g-certificate! It is just the most random website ever!

I haven’t found anything yet because all the maxi dresses I’ve found may or may not fit me. Most dresses are out of large, and while I’m probably a medium anyway I should probably measure.

I’m tempted to just buy some dresses from amazon but a lot of the models look Asian, which means there are different sizing considerations. I think all clothing sites should have to state the model’s height like shoptiques. I never knew how helpful that could be! Suuuure that dress is a maxi… on a 5’2″ woman like my brother’s wife, but on me it’s a booty skirt!

      • April 10, 2016 at 12:01 pm

I can feel the pitchforks starting to raise as I suggested the laying off of cat fur huffing…..

Folding laundry is SO overrated! I have about 1000 loads of laundry to do and no excuse not to other than I don’t wanna, lol.

I’ve spent most of the weekend avoiding doing my taxes. Very uninteresting.

I bought a Jawbone UP3 fitness band yesterday. Not for fitness though, for sleep monitoring. I have narcolepsy so I’m hoping it will be helpful for me. Anyone have one of those bands? I got up once and when I went back to bed, it didn’t monitor anymore sleep. Semi-interesting? Lol

    • April 10, 2016 at 12:00 pm

Here is what a jawbone would report on my sleep activity in an 8 hour period: total sleep time 2 hours. Actual deep sleep: 10 min. I deem your week Interesting because you have to get creative in finding multiple ways to avoid your taxes!

I am (screening) angry cleaning as I was inspired by my hero, Bunmi Latidan of Honest Toddler, who posted on FB this morning. I cut and pasted somewhat below…

Introducing the newest superhero to hit the scene and bravely defend life as we know it: Angry Cleaning BatMom
She’s not afraid to throw away fully functional toys, crayons, Tupperwares full of goo, or Legos. She stuffs towels into cabinets only half folded. She’s only somewhat committed to recycling.
Her weapons: straight bleach, hot water, and tea tree oil.
Her fears: Someone speaking to her or asking for a snack (the answer is no, motherf&%*^).
Her villain: the state of this home.
Can she do it? Will she do it? Will her family have the good sense to stay clear of her for the next few hours?
    Only time will tell.
Until then, when you hear the frantic spraying of vinegar or the soft sounds of hardcore swearing echoing through the hallway, know that she’s coming for your Shopkins and her name…her name is Angry Cleaning BatMom.

Pipsqueak and Squeak are with daddy in a playspace somewhere far away. I totally expect them to clean up my aftermath of acceptable toys that passed the black hole of the black trashbag when they return. Let me tell you, it requires soooo much patience to have wee ones clean up after themselves but to have a clean home for during their sleeptime and not killing myself trippin on toys to pee/pump in the middle of the night is priceless!

My hero has created a new evolutionary technique called, attachment laundering. I semi-apply this technique to fit my family lifestyle to the wall across the laundry closet.

    • April 10, 2016 at 12:20 pm

A reading from the words of Bunmi Latidan, Pnut’s hero, on attachment laundering…

Most of you know about the washing and drying steps in doing laundry, but did you know about the third step? To be safe to wear, laundry has to be spread out in your living room either on the floor or the couch (I do both because I’m thorough) for several days. Science calls this the “airing” of the laundry and it is vital. Skipping this step results in clothes that are dangerously under-oxygenated. You can also let your laundry breathe in your bed and cosleep with it if you feel like it’s insecure. This is called attachment laundering. When you put your laundry in drawers and closets straight out of the dryer, you’re telling it that you don’t care about its feelings. Please, show your laundry some love today.

      • April 10, 2016 at 12:49 pm

quickly clicks to look up this Bunmi Latidan!

    • April 10, 2016 at 12:48 pm

I freakin love this! She is only somewhat committed to recycling might be my favorite line….
YEs I am waiting for the day I break my neck on a small plastic car left in the middle of the floor..

I started a major closet clean-out (clothes, jewelry, bags, shoes) yesterday. I will sell, give away or donate until I no longer feel anxiety whenever I look at an overstuffed corner of my home. So not an interesting weekend, but hopefully a productive one!

On laundry. I don’t fold. Actually, when I read this post I remembered that I still had a load in the dryer from days ago! Which means that I need to iron everything since it is now a wrinkled mess.

    • April 10, 2016 at 1:31 pm

Closet clean outs can be therapeutic so I declare it interesting! Of course we want to see what you are cleaning out. You should snap some pics and we could post it! I mean inquiring minds want to know what is in the closet of Artemis. Oh and btw did you see that Ellada Lane is going under?! Time for you to start your greek sub box!!

        April 10, 2016 at 3:33 pm

I’ll definitely snap some pics of what I’m getting rid of! It’ll make me accountable for sure. Right now, all that I have completed is baby clothes. Lots and lots of baby clothes.

Yeah, too bad about Ellada Lane. Any business is hard to start and maintain. I hope everyone who subscribed in advance gets their money back. Hmm, sub box creator. If I ever quit my day job ….(crosses fingers! One of these days!).

        • April 10, 2016 at 10:23 pm

Meanwhile we will be dreaming of your box and hoping you quit your day job!!

    • April 10, 2016 at 1:39 pm

You’re good if you iron them! I throw a few ice cubes in the dryer and turn it back on!

    • April 10, 2016 at 1:40 pm

Here is a comment from one of Bunmi’s followers regarding Attachment Laundering

I leave mine in the dryer for at least a week. Randomly I refresh it by tumble
Drying for about 20 min. Then I’ll wait a few days and repeat. This is called exercising your laundry. You don’t want lazy laundry.

    • LC
      April 10, 2016 at 4:24 pm

What is this “ironing” you speak of? Just turn that bad boy back on for 30 mins or so to de-wrinkle your laundry! You can also spray some water on the laundry first to add some moisture to aid de-wrinkling.

Kudos on the closet clean out! That’s on my list of things I needed to do at least a year (give or take) ago. Lol

I too am intrigued by Susie’s pigment pressing and need to look into that. And I want to see what’s in Artemis’ closet! So proud (& jealous) of your de-cluttering.

    My week:
Mon-Thurs: Work (nothing interesting happening at work right now), cook dinner, watch TV (iZombie, Survior, Chicago Fire, Dancing with the Stars…)
Fri: Work, then Girls Night Out with my mom, sisters & niece to the new “Cinebistro” where they serve you dinner before your movie starts in big, roomy, reclining seats. We saw “My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2” – hilarious!
Sat: play on the internets, do laundry (hang up virtually everything that’s fold-able right when it’s finished in the dryer b/c I hate to fold or iron), hubbie & I took my mom to church and then dinner at a new (to us) restaurant that specializes in Mediterranean Food – yum!
Sun (today): help my sis and bro-in-law write a letter to the school board because an incident involving my 13yr-old Autistic nephew being bullied wasn’t handled properly. 🙁 Then have friends over for dinner – hubbie cooking flank steak.

    Maybe TMI, but you asked!

    • April 10, 2016 at 2:37 pm

It was incredibly easy! You just mix rubbing alcohol (90% is best) in with your loose powder. Then you pour into a shadow pan and put a folded paper towel over it. Put a quarter on it and press down. You do the pressing several times until the paper towel is clean and the shadow looks pressed! That’s it. I have pictures on my blog.

        April 10, 2016 at 5:19 pm

Awesome thanks for the tip! Got some I want to do now! I don’t have shadow pans, but I do have some super small containers with lids!

My week was boring! I’m back in college and boy is it harder the second time! So homework and studying were all that got accomplished here! And being that winter can’t decide to go yet it was to miserable to go out anyways!

Love the “airing” laundry! Now I know why my clothes hate me!!! Makes perfect sense!!

      • April 10, 2016 at 10:22 pm

Yes! I am so glad you documented it!

    • April 10, 2016 at 10:22 pm

Love! I want to go to a Cinebistro. How was the food? Mediterranean food?! Yum times infinity. Hmm writing a letter to a school board sounds interesting. On one hand, it makes me sad that they even have to write a letter and on the other hand, it makes me really happy that you guys for standing up for your nephews rights.

        Thanks MBJ.
The Cinebistro food was surprisingly good! There was a goat cheese appetizer that was yum, Wagyu beef sliders that my mom really liked, crispy Mahi soft tacos were tasty, chicken alfredo that my sister LOVED.

The biggest thing I did this week is looking online for organic cotton clothing that is on sale. Green Label Organic is having a sale on their sale items. But one sale item get one sale item free. Sale is over on April 15. And Pact is having a sitewide sale of 15% off. Still looking for organic cotton jeans. Mostly just the usual week.

    • April 10, 2016 at 4:04 pm

Online shopping instantly qualifies you for Interesting!! I found some organic cotton clothing for baby from Burts Bees.

Thanks guys! I’ll definitely be looking into that Farmcat!! I’m a sock fanatic. I almost bought some quirky socks at Fuego, but I’m so burnt from socks that fall down that I just didn’t want to risk it.

I’m a sock fanatic too. When you spend a good portion of your time
on your feet in workboots good, comfortable socks are important. I just saw them in a review for Luxily Boutique Subscription Box. The woman reviewing the box mentions the socks has their own sub box and I checked it out. You don’t need to purchase a sub box to buy the their socks.

I’m trying to eat less because I just spend most of my day eating and I have a lot stomach pain from it. I decided to see the doctor for it.
The book I’m reading is okay.
I did some homework this weekend.
Friday I went to a birthday in the boonies and got to hear a Trump lover’s rant which was uncomfortable.
Today I wandered the mall worth a friend, got my brows threaded, avoided any Whole Food parking lot altercations when I grabbed a cake, and now I’m at a family cook out.
No laundry for me! I do it once a month, and sheets and towels weekly.

Which book are you reading? I was productive in spurts. Graded an exam, a ton of homework assignments, and some quizzes. Prepped lectures for one class for the entire week. Wrote an exam. Finished two books (one was OK the other I really liked and started a third).

        April 10, 2016 at 11:09 pm

I’m reading Worlds of Ink and Shadows and listening to Another Day. The former is meh and the latter is just a retelling of the first book which is kinda lame. What are you reading and what do you teach?

        • CeciliaA
          April 11, 2016 at 7:48 pm

I just finished Worlds of Ink and Shadows. I was underwhelmed, there were parts that had great potential but it just didn’t hold up for me. After that I read Rebel of the Sands and really liked it. I finished it two days. Then I started The Love That Split the World. I’m not far enough along with that one to have much of an impression yet.

I teach various majors level biology courses (mostly anatomy, physiology, and microbiology with some cell and molecular biology mixed in for variety). It’s an interesting job and never boring.

          • April 11, 2016 at 8:13 pm

It’s definitely a book I started to fast skim. I just don’t understand the point of reimagining real people in different situations like this… why not just make a new character? Mostly I’m still mad that I read a book about the Bronte’s set on an island off of Australia and their brother was dead… it just didn’t make sense because it had absolutely nothing to do with the real people. The Love That Split The World I am skeptical about because high school INTENSE romance books just are weird to me. Twilight…

Science! I always wish I’d gone into Ecology or Earth Science, but I was scared away by all of the math and chem courses I would have had to take. It would be nice sitting out in a valley poking at rocks =) Though I don’t like to get my clothes dirty, so it would have taken some getting used to. Do you have a bunch of anatomy coloring books to calm yourself?

          • CeciliaA
            April 11, 2016 at 9:49 pm

I tell my students to get the coloring books. My coloring books have artfully drawn swear words. I only like getting dirty during field work when it’s animal oriented. I’m a physiologist and internist by training and love field work that is usually decomposing or at the very least smelly.

I haven’t read a lot of historical fiction because I have issues with the reimagining also. At least this one is based upon their early works but it still wasn’t for me. The Love That Split the World has more potential than Twilight. At least the characters seem human and like they may have some redeeming qualities. I thought that most of the characters in Twilight would be improved by not existing. I also prefer books with a stronger female lead. I will report back more on TLTSTW (way to long to keep typing); I’m only about 100 pages in.

          • April 11, 2016 at 11:03 pm

Sorry, Twilight wasn’t a good example… I just couldn’t think of any other teen life-or-death romance novels where love will conquer all and books that say nothing is more important than the person you love at 16. I suppose having never dated anyone as a teen, I am even more skeptical of teen love.

Please do update me on TLTSTW, I am thinking I might read Starflight[?] next, or perhaps just something rando on my shelf.

          • Heat7918
            April 12, 2016 at 10:33 am

I can attest to nothing being more important than the boy you love when you’re 16… thank goodness that was a long time ago for me. But yes, it really felt that way as a teenager – Twilight didn’t exaggerate that part of it.

        • April 12, 2016 at 9:04 pm

Haha, Heat perhaps you’re right. Part of me still wishes I’d said something when my highschool crush was looking for a prom date and kept peeping at me. I think we were both too shy. He’s pretty darn cute still 😉 I mean… not that I looked…

I’m trying to come up with something I did this last week that wasn’t work-related. I found my eyelash curler! Which I used before going somewhere work-related. I did laundry! So that I could wear a certain outfit for work. I started doing yoga again! Because I’m getting stressed about…well, you know. Luckily, I LOVE my job (it’s my own company that I co-founded) but sometimes I find it hard to talk about interesting things on other subjects. Perhaps I should get a cat for some of this sweet, sweet cat hair huffing that is all the rage now? That’s like yoga bonus points!

    • April 11, 2016 at 3:42 pm

How long was that eyelash curler lost?! Tell us about your company!! I am so impressed already that you run your own business. Hooray for yoga destress! I have to do crossfit to de-stress myself. If I try to do yoga to calm down I end up like the boy in Charlie brown with the dirt swirling around him.

      • Elizabeth
        April 11, 2016 at 6:04 pm

Thank you! Um…I’m embarrassed to say the curler has been hiding at the bottom of one of my make-up bags for about a year. I decided to look for a particular lipstick the other day and…bam! There it was. My husband and I co-founded a non-profit theatre company (small, but growing). We’re producing our 3rd season this summer, so busy-ness. Crossfit looks so hard-core! I don’t think I’ve reached that level of fitness awesomeness yet.
