Sunday Morning Coffee Talk-When Doves Cry

Unless you have been under a rock this week, you know that the musical artist Prince died. Details are unknown but he was fairly young and so rumors swirl.

Did he mean something to you? I am finding in my FB feed that the people similar to me in age (34 well, actually 35 in May) are the ones who feel the loss most.

The first time I heard Prince I was 8 yrs old. It was in the movie Batman with Micheal Keaton (aka the best one):

I loved this scene (even though I am an artist and they are defacing art) and it was solely related to this song. It is infectious.

One of my other favorite Prince memories is his song When Doves Cry that was featured in Romeo and Juliet covered by Quindon Tarver.

Not everyone loved Prince or has memories of his impact on their lives. But most people understand the impact that loss has on our lives……

In 2014, I lost one of the most influential people in my life to an unexpected and aggressive cancer. My aunt was diagnosed in late 2013 and died less than a year later. It was fast. I was pregnant and couldn’t fly to see her by the time we new how aggressive it was and how little time she had left. I miss her everyday!

Did you love Prince? What song was most meaningful to you?

OR

Have you lost someone you loved that impacted your life in a substantial way?

Yes, I know, this is a blog devoted to subscription boxes and that usually we discuss much much much lighter topics. But…loss and how people cope with it was on my mind this week.. So share if you want too!

It was 1984 and my parents bought me the Purple Rain album for my 11th birthday. I have been in love with Prince ever since. The way he looked, the way he moved, the way he sang and played his guitar. He mesmerized me. He was a musical genius and an impeccable entertainer.

My son is dreamin’ while I write this, so forgive me if it goes astray. I’m not usually moved by a celebrity’s death, but I am very sad about Prince. I grew up listening to him and still listen to him. His lyrics are smart, edgy, thoughtful. His music, powerful. He got the look, he got the hook. In an industry of manufactured clones, he has stood out as a brilliant, original, authentic artist. Baby, there ain’t nobody better.

I lost my dad a few years ago. That affected me profoundly and sometimes I get discouraged, ’cause I never see him anymore. He had the kind of beauty that comes from the inside. He never got to see his grandchildren and I am sad that they will miss out on having him in their lives. If he could, he would give them the world. I named my son after him and I see a lot of my dad in my son. Still, I miss him and wish I just had extra time and his kiss.

My best friend lost her dad a few months ago. When Prince died, she sent me a text that said, “Our dads get to meet Prince!”. Surely, he will be the funkiest man they’ve ever seen.

      Thanks for sharing
He really was sooo talented. The combo of his lyrics and music were just so epic.
I love that your dad is meeting Prince! I hope my aunt attends the show too… 🙂
Loss is never understandable to the brain and some we just don’t really recover from. Nothing can really fill the void that the person left in your heart/life. Your dad sounds amazing.

My dad passed away when I was 17 and that is the sweetest thought that they can meet Prince! That thought put a ray on sunshine in my dark and cold little heart. 😉

I didn’t realize that was a Prince song during the Batman scene. I am also a fan of the Tim Burton Batmans. Also when you asked about our favorite Prince song, Romeo + Juliet was the first thing that came to mind!

Last night at karaoke we did some Prince, Bowie, and Amy Winehouse.

Oh man, I went to Romeo and Juliet with my first boyfriend. That movie is beyond epic. One of my faves of all time!

This is a great post btw

I love all the stories I am reading about Prince now. He was just so sassy!!! I was not huge into his music but I guess he was since he wrote so many hits for other artists.

While I was young, I recall when 1999 was released and was constantly on the radio. It was 1982 and the young me couldn’t comprehend a date in the distant future. What would the world be like then? What would I be doing?
1999 came and past, and I can’t quite remember what the world was like in 1999 or what I was doing, only it would have disappointed the 1982 version of me.
    Favorite Prince song: Erotic City.
Favorite Prince moment: The Superbowl where it started raining as he played Purple Rain. Blew my bear mind…

      So good!
I always loved 1999 because that was the year I graduated high school!

Thank you for sharing. I was shocked when I heard about his death. It’s always going be about Purple Rain and the songs from that album for me. Strangely I was looking up biographies about him the day before his death. It’s truly a loss.

In 2012 my step-grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. My grandmother had married him before I was born, so he was more like a real grandfather than a step one. She had robbed the cradle, so to speak, and he was a year younger than my father! Haha I loved him and he was definitely the type of person born to be a grandpa rather than a dad. That was also the year that I got sick with a mystery illness that had me in extreme pain, so we got to mope and whine together. He died in December 2012 at the age of 55.

This year I lost both of my grandparents on the other side of my family, simple old age for them. And last week my amazing and beautiful cousin died from cervical cancer on the day she turned 29.

What a couple of years it has been for you…The instagram pic of your cousin is what partially inspired this. I saw the pic of your beeeeaautiful cousin and thought about how painful the loss is of someone who is young regardless of whether not they are your family member or a celebrity.
So sorry about your cousin. From that instagram pic, she looked like a goddess!

We (that means my husband) restores old Corvettes. The first one he painted was bright red. I loved blaring Little Red Corvette when we were riding around. I’ve been so fortunate in that I’ve never lost anyone really close to me. But this has been a difficult year because my Daddy is in congestive heart failure. Both Adrian & I still have our parents. We know the reality that time is running out, but it’s still so shocking for some reason. I guess you can’t prepare for it. I also have an 8 yr old grandson with Schwachman Diamond Syndrome and a Chiari malformation of his brain stem. He’s doing wonderful right now, but we definitely give thanks for every birthday!

What a blessing to have your parents still around! OMg old corvettes?!? I want to come over! I have always had a dream of owing a 1960’s corvette!
