Sunday Morning Coffee Talk-Did ya know?

What the people want…The people get. Now, I can’t deliver more cats but I can deliver more furry cat sized dogs. I got loads of those pics. I may even try to catch them barking their heads off at the mailman!! Anyhoo- this is Bridget. She is getting old but she is a lover and a barker……

Now onto our coffee talk…

I listen to NPR. I learn so many things about a variety of topics. So I was driving home from taking the kids to the carwash…(hey it’s Maui…that is our idea of a good time) and they had a wonderful piece playing about the Vietnam Memorial. So as Memorial day is upon us I had a few things to impart from my NPR session. The story was extremely intriguing and powerful as I was just a baby when this was being built and so I had never heard of a lot of the controversy that surrounded the building of it.

  1. Did ya know that the designer of the Vietnam Memorial was a woman?
*Her name is Maya Lin-she was a student at Yale at the time
  2. Do you know how she was selected?
*from a blind competition in which there were 1441 applicants
  3. Do you know how old she was when she won the competition to design the memorial?
    *21 years old
  4. Do you know how the names are listed on the memorial?
    *Chronologically
  5. Do you know how many names are listed?
    *58,272
  6. Want to know the criteria for being listed?
*names are of those who died or missing from the Vietnam War
  7. Time span for names listed:
    *1959-1975
  8. What kind of stone is it?
*Black Granite from Bangladore, India-chosen for its reflective nature

Lastly, despite it’s beginnings being shrouded in controversy, it remains one of the most powerful memorials in America.

So friends-Anything to share? Ever been to the memorial? Did you have a family member who fought in our military? What are you going to be up too on Memorial day? Busting out the white pants?

I went to the memorial my senior year in high school, not long after it was built. (Yes I am old). I did not understand the gravity of its meaning. One of our chaperones was seeing it for the first time and she found her brother’s name on it and cried. I didn’t get it then, but I get the chills every time I think of it as an adult. I want to go back again some day and find his name.

I found the way they chose to list the names soo fascinating. It was actually Maya Lin who demanded they be listed chronologically. She felt that seeing the names together on the specific day that they or went missing was more powerful than searching through dozens of smiths to find a name.
I really want to see it now!
Also ps….any new box signups with all these sales?

I have held out on sales, but I am watching the summer PSMH. I need to renew my 2nd Beauty Heroes, I was waiting to see what is in June, but it sounds like they may sell out again! I got my email that I will be billed on June 2nd for Adidas Avenue A, YAY! I might have to check out Glowing Beets after someone recomended it last week.

We get a new puppy Friday so I may have to check out Bark Box. (A black lab whom shall be named Willow.) We have an almost three year old black lab named LoLo, and James James the cat! If only my husband would give in on one more cat my life would be full and I would need no more sub boxes! HA!

Oooo I can’t wait to see what is in the Avenue A box. After all my excitement I didn’t sub to the summer box because I dont want a fitness tracker. Isn’t that sad…. I do enough self judgement without a fitness tracker telling me I didn’t sleep well!! I know I am going to regret it though. So my BH already shipped and I am dying to know what is inside. I saw a spoiler on instagram that they are launching wither a new product or line this month. eek!

My step dad was in the Air Force and looking back at my childhood, all the traveling we did, all the people we got to meet, I can not think of a better way to have been brought up! I have so much respect for our military! My niece recently joined the Marines and I am sooo proud of her! She is in Kuwait right now and my sis doesn’t get much sleep without worrying! But she is a very proud momma! So, this weekend tugs at my heart strings, hoping she has the time of her life and let’s her mom and I do the worrying for her! While she does her job (as she says) I pray that they all stay safe!

Thank you for sharing! After the birth of my kids, I realized what an emotional event having a son or daughter who is in the military must be. Tell your sister I will keep her daughter and HER in my prayers!!

My dad is a retired Marine. He did several tours of Vietnam. I still remember hearing about the “visits” other families would receive. We were so blessed as he returned safely every time. He is in the Marine Corps Mustang Association, which is a very small number of Marines that were commissioned on the battle field. He retired as a Major. Memorial Day has always been so meaningful to me. Even more this year as my dad is in congestive heart failure and not doing great. I write him a poem every year. I posted this year’s on my blog with some pictures of him. This is a very special post you did. Thank you.
