Play! By Sephora Subscription Review: Oily/Combo by Elizabeth – July 2016

Yay! We get to see the other option of this month’s Play! box/bag thanks to Elizabeth!!! I am so excited whenever anyone wants to do a review or give an opinion and it warmed my heart to see that Elizabeth took the time to write out an awesome take on her box after leaving great comments on Heat’s review of the Dry skin box!

Now take it away Elizabeth!!! 🙂 (also thanks again!!!)

Here is a review of the alternate products in this month’s Play! by Sephora that I got today:

For we Oily/Combo ladies:

I received the BeautyBlender Blotterazzi, Ouai Wave Spray (which I LOVE, but sad that Sephora doesn’t sell it in this size anymore), and Nest Citrine perfume sample just like Heat7918.

However, instead of getting the Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer, I got the SMASHBOX PHOTO FINISH OIL FREE FOUNDATION PRIMER PORE MINIMIZING in .25 fl oz size.  Whew!  That is one mouthful of a product name.  I just used a teeny amount of this slightly tinted primer over my nose and under my eyes to compare with the rest of my un-primed face.  It definitely blurs out my pores!  Shiny-ness in now matte, as well.  It didn’t do much for any other imperfections or redness, but definitely does what its 8-word name implies.

Instead of Benefit Cosmetics Dew the Hoola Soft Matte Liquid Bronzer, I got TOO FACED SOLEIL MATTE BRONZER in ‘Medium/Deep’ color in a .08 oz size.  This smells like cocoa powder.  Probably because one of its ingredients is cocoa powder.  I want to taste this sample.  But I won’t!  In lieu of eating it, I applied it to my face in the ‘E’ and ‘3’ way of applying this type of bronzer.  Just a little, of course, and it gave me some nice contouring.  Now my face smells like cocoa.  I wonder if there is a way I can “accidentally” lick my own face?

Instead of First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser, I got FIRST AID BEAUTY SKIN RESCUE DEEP CLEANSER WITH RED CLAY in a 1.0 oz size.  I just washed my face with this red gel and it worked great!  I only had the aforementioned primer and bronzer (plus a little foundation) on, so not sure if it would take off a full Saturday night make-up face.  But I love all things First Aid Beauty, so I’m sure it would work well then, too.  It’s been a few minutes since I washed my face with it and my skin feels a little dry, but that’s what moisturizer is for!

I’ve attached a photo of all my Play! by Sephora goodies, as well.

I really like this box and will use everything in it, although I am a bit of a germ-a-phobe.  So, I’m nervous about using the blotting sponge.  Maybe I’ll just wash it after every use instead of the weekly washing it recommends!  The OUAI WAVE SPRAY is already a favorite of mine when I have no time from shower to work or other events!

Lick your face! This review was cracking me up – great job Elizabeth! I need to learn about the E & 3 for doing bronzer. 🙂

Thank you so much, Heat7918!!! The E & 3 thing is basically bronzing the brow bone & temple, then cheek bone and finally jaw line on both sides of your face. So, looking in the mirror, you’re essentially “making” an ‘E’ on your left side & a ‘3’ on the right with your make-up brush.

Elizabeth you really did an awesome job and the face licking comment really made me giggle. As you know anything that is face licking good is of interest to me!

I’m wondering how you use the Quai spray? Whenever I put beach stuff on my hair it just ends up looking like a mess with one side weirdly poofing out.

Thank you so much, Subscriptionista!!! I am honored to have a review up amongst all of your other awesome reviewers!! I have naturally wavy hair, which I normally use a flat iron on after its dry otherwise I am a frizzy poof-ball. For the Ouai: I towel blot (I don’t rub it vigorously with the towel since that damages the hair follicle and promotes frizz, so I gently squeeze excess water out with the towel) after my shower, then I comb it out with a large-tooth comb. After a few minutes, I spray the Ouai all over my damp hair and then scrunch it a lot with my fingers from tip to root. Finally, I just let it air dry without combing or brushing it again. That works for me – especially since it’s quick and easy (two of my favorite words.)

Thank you for the details because I might try it. If it doesn’t work for me then I will put together a box for you. I MIGHT have more of these actually. I have to look in my stash!!!

Good luck with it!! It actually took me some trial and error to come up with that little system.

    1. The smashbox name reminds me of people who hash tag every possible word they can tag….
    2. Accidentally lick your own face? Just think like a toddler! Mine manages to “accidentally” lick all surrounding surfaces! I have seen that Too Faced does a lot of fun scented stuff. I think they have a palette out that smells like peaches!
    3. That first aid cleanser looks awesome!
    4. Omg-we think the same! When I saw the purpose of the bloterazzi I immediately envisioned germs everywhere!!

Ha! I get so tired of hashtagging stuff. I wonder how anyone find this blog and pretty much doubt it is instagram at this point hahaha

So you don’t want me to send you my slightly “seasoned” blotterazzi?!?

Thank you, Pnut!!! This was my first Play by Sephora box, and I’m so glad they started matching the products to our skin type!

Any envy or are you happy with what you got?

I like this version better. The bronzer was more impressive as a goodie to a friend (I gifted her a bunch of goodies in a Glossybox). I already have that lick my face bronzer in a non-clamshell form from a past Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit. I am almost postive I sampled the First Aid as a foil sample so I am glad to have a bigger one I like oily/combo stuff for summer days!
