Blue Apron Subscription Box Review – Mushroom and Fennel Fettuccine (Well… KINDA)

Blue Apron is a subscription that sends just about everything you need to make 3 meals for either 2 people ($59.94/wk) or 4 people (two different options that are under $9.99 per person per meal).

There are all different ways to justify spending the money for this box/service. I like to just admit I don’t know how to cook, hate cooking, and will never spend enough time to look up a recipe let alone go to the store and pick out all the ingredients.

I read comments about Blue Apron and other cooking boxes and people always comment that they can feed two people for less. Some argue back about restaurant prices. I don’t even think the argument is one. They are both right, and they are both wrong. Many bloggers have priced out how much it would cost to buy ingredients like this and it turns out to be pretty spendy. Someone like me is not going to have miso just kicking around the house. Hell, sometimes I don’t even have mac and cheese! Restaurants are usually more money, but then you are not making the food yourself and you get to go outside.

My personal interest in Blue Apron is that it is like having a cooking lesson where I can drink while cooking. Also, I like to pretend I am a TV chef and that my underlings have already prepped things for me and all I have to do is a little of this and that.

This box may not make sense for you to buy for a lot of reasons but watching my shoddy efforts might be fun…

I have been very open with my ups and downs regarding this service but from time to time it is a lifesaver.

What’s on for tonight?

Blue Apron Review

Looks like this will be easy enough with a belly full of wine! (Actually it ended up not being as easy as I had thought lol)

Mushrooms in the pan

They call for a little less oil and a lot less garlic than I put in, but I was feeling sort of like a chef and decided to free pour and get wild. I love garlic and since I wasn’t cooking for you (you lucky devil you!) I went ahead and cooked to my specific tastes…  I use “taste” loosely…

Mushroom are done so now I put them to the side and wipe out the pan

Time for the other part of the sauce.

Again there is a ton of garlic that I personally put in. Also more wine!

Dammit, I dropped the noodles. Uh yeah, I am not going to be able to save these

Damn it! I dropped the pasta in the sink while draining the water. Let me tell you I had a full on tantrum when I did this. I have a messed up paw and part of its many annoying qualities is that it is super sensitive to heat. So As I was pouring the water it became to hot for my paw to bear. Anyway, I cursed, cried, hit a wall, and swiped a bottle of Tums off of a ledge to hear it clatter on the floor.

Then I gathered  myself up and made new pasta. I did not measure anything and so I made a bit too much and just added some Parmesan cheese to the sauce to give the noodles flavor. I was thankful that I used a heavy hand with the garlic!

Ta Da!

Blue Apron Review

Verdict: It was an easy recipe but I jacked it up with the noodles. I am sorta bitter about my mistake but I enjoyed an easy dish to make and it had flavor. I enjoy turnips and the fennel wasn’t bad. I was surprised that there were so few mushrooms. I wonder if they were switched with another recipes mushrooms but I am not sure. Overall, this dish could have been done by a 10 year old… just not me!

    Poor pasta and paw 🙁

My husband is really anti-lead water so we use water cooler water. When I make pasta I usually do more than two rounds to use up the water. I either use a pasta spoon or tongs to remove the batches of pasta instead of draining. Also if it makes you feel better my paws are ok but I manage to drain pasta whilst draining pasta using the colander.

Looks yummy though! I like fennel it goes good with a chunky pasta like what you selected.

Finished product looks great! My messed up paw has prevented me from writing lately. I have had a very long pity party that I’m just now getting over. And I like extra oil and garlic too. Keeps the vampires away;)

Hehe, I like the garlic comment. I also love garlic!

My cute boy made me dinner tonight and he actually used a recipe [even though he made his customary dinner of broccoli, potatoes/rice, and chicken], so I was inspired to get another meal box. I went with Sun Basket but we weren’t really blown away by the options for next week.
