Taco Bout It Tuesday: Black Friday 2016

“So,” you may be wondering, “what did the ladies of Subscriptionista buy over Shoppingfest Weekend???”

WELL, let me tell you. Because I’m très nosy and asked them, we’ll look at what Boxkraze, Pnut, and myself purchased!

Let’s start with Subista.

“But wait!” You will yell, “you did not mention her just a sentence earlier!” And you’re right. So, let’s continue.

Subista

“I didn’t buy anything on Black Friday it was so disappointing!!!! Everything was out of my size. Like vultures took all of my stuff lol didn’t the store know?”

Total damage done: $0

I am not into Black Friday, so I tried to stay away from the craziness. However, Pnut lets us know when Popsugar does something crazy like throws out $100 off a 6 month subscription, so I bit. I love PS and cannot refuse! However… I still don’t understand their business model of “Hook ’em with a great deal, then once we’ve got ’em, reel ’em in with another great deal and never make ’em pay full price!” Usually companies try to ween you off the deal and make you pay full price…

**Sees the hook come in from stage left to try to yank her off her soap box, and runs away with the computer instead.**

  • Allure: month to month with four months for $15/mo $10/mo = $40
  • CatLady Box: 3 catnip beachballs for $14.97 $11.98
  • Popsugar Must Have: 6 months for $214.70 $125.94. No extra boxes for me because I bought the Winter Lady box and it should arrive Saturday–squueeeee!

Total damage done: $177.92

Bella and CatLady Box beach ball

Bella LOVES her beachball! She plays with it every day, and I finally figured out it was because McBoyfriend stuffs it with new catnip frequently and then chases her around the house in the mornings.

Boxkraze

  • Glossybox: one year using the beauty12 promo code for $160
  • Popsugar Must Have: 6 months for $214.70 $125.94, the Cozy Home Box for $24.95, and the Fashion & Beauty Box for $29.95
  • No more Ipsy, but Play! or Allure are on Boxkraze’s credit card mind.

Total damage done: $340.84

Pnut

Black Friday/Cyber Monday Damage:

  • Popsugar Must Have: 15 months using two 6 month and one 3 month pre-Black Friday code for $599.25 $311.73!!
  • PSMH Cozy Home Box: $24.95
  • Beautyfix Mystery Box: $15
  • Birchbox: $30 for a Limited Edition box with the ACE’s 40% off sale
    • Still available! I just spent 20 minutes browsing…
  • Sephora: $51 for bliss
  • Cancelled: Play by Sephora because no code and spoilers indicated party ready beauty and hair products. Rumors circulated about red lippies and some gold eyeshadow. Avoided the Amazon lightning deals.

Total damage done: $432.68

I’m pretty envious of Pnut’s PSMH buying smarts! I was lamenting the lack of a one year deal, and she was like BAM! 15 months.

So, dear readers, what did you all purchase? Any immediate regrets? Any amazing steals? Anything you purchased to hide in the closet so your mom/boyfriend/roommate/cat doesn’t know what happened to your credit card??

    Oooh! I love “what I bought” posts as I am also tres nosy and also a shopaholic.

    I didn’t get any sub boxes as I promised myself if I stayed with Happy Rebel for winter (and I am), I would not repurchase Popsugar (and I didn’t). Nothing else tempted me. However, that did not stop a massive buying binge during Black Friday/Cyber Monday.

    I got:
    – A LV bag for my mom;
    – A wallet made from cork for my brother (he picked it out);
    – A pair of UGG boots for my niece (SALE);
    – A toy train, a sticker set and some hats and gloves for my kiddos (some on SALE);
    – An Erin Condren planner for me (30% OFF!);
    – A cool Lithograph painting for me;
    – A dress, a sweater, a skirt, 4 pairs of shoes and an eye cream, most on sale from Nordstrom, all for me;
    – A customized tee shirt and sweatshirt from Bow and Drape for me (25% off coupon!);
    – 2 customized coin purses from Bow and Drape for me and my mom (25% off coupon!).

    Total damage done: I refuse to add that up.

    Can’t wait to hear what everyone else got!

      Thanks, Artemis!! You sound like you had a good shopping trip! I wanted the Happy Rebel sale but I missed out on both. Boohoo.

      My account was inactive so I was able to order the 3 month with the freebie item prior to Black Friday. Then on Black Friday because my account was active, I upgraded to a 6 month sub. Then I fended off the temptation to upgrade another 6 months since I read that the code would still work but resistance was futile.

    First of all, Bella looks so soft and fluffy!! Now then, I went a little Popsugar mad: 3 month pre-Black Friday deal, 6 month & 3 month Black Friday deal AS WELL AS buying a past box yesterday as part of another site’s Cyber Monday deal – which all came to about $20 a box plus tax. Total: $270 for 13 (technically) months of Popsugar goodness. That’s enough now. Must. Shop. I mean…Must. Stop!

      So are you getting 2 boxes a month or really 13?

        No, I took advantage of their new upgrade system, so 1 box a month. Do you think I should buy one more since 13 might be unlucky? Hmmmm….

        • November 30, 2016 at 2:29 pm

          Oh I love it! I really wish I’d taken a page from Pnut’s book and thrown in for more months. I did back away from the Home and Beauty boxes though because I already got two mystery boxes and every regular box for the past year so I should be good.

    Yay if we can discuss non-boxes!

    It all started Thursday night…we were staying downtown Chicago and needed to get some walking in. So we wandered over to Marshall Fields (Macy’s) where the MAC counter lured me in with 40% off. A couple of palettes later we wandered upstairs where I picked up some lovely ornaments. I left the store at least $100 lighter than when I entered.

    The next morning after fueling up at Wildberry Cafe with some delicious crepes (no weight worries for me) we wandered our way up Michigan Ave. This included a stop at the Chicago Blackhawks store where I again lost a couple hundred, but I was oh so happy.

    Next up, a stop at the new Sephora store on Michigan Ave. The deals were there for those who wanted them. Being a savvy Rouge girl, I knew what I wanted and stuck to that…the package of 3 (2 minis) Sephora brand Beauty Blenders. $10 dropped and I hadn’t even broken a sweat!

    We continued heading north with our next stop…Water Tower Place. Sadly, for the first time ever, my 13 year old did NOT want to go in The American Girl Store. Instead, I picked up a bit of Chicago Cubs World Series swag losing another $50. I then made my way to the outerware department of Fields-Macy’s and found a lovely metallic red down jacket (ok my daughter did, but it fits me so I wore it already!) another $75 lighter!

    Guess what? Another Sephora store. It is like quick sand, I just get sucked in. So, I dropped $25 more before my husband dragged me away.

    We then spent 5 hours waiting for a table at the Walnut Room (tradition) before we wrapped it up at Nordstrom and I ALMOST bought this. My husband was giving me the side eye though and I know when to leave well enough alone! Seriously has anyone tried these?

    We ended the night at Garret’s for some cheese & Carmel corn and Gino’s East for some pizza and beer. Saturday morning Wrigley Field pics before sadly leaving my favorite city. I would seriously like to recommend Doves Luncheonette or Wildberry for anyone who finds themselves looking for good breakfast in Chicago!

    All told I left Chicago at least $500 lighter, 1.2 pounds heavier, and still need to buy some gifts for someone who is not me! IT WAS AWESOME!!!

    Sorry PNut that I didn’t get in touch, it was a whirlwind!

    • November 30, 2016 at 4:17 pm

      No worries it sounds like a whirlwind! 40% off MAC yes please! I will need to try Wildberry I love me some crepes. That brush set looks interesting. My brush collection is pretty much complete so if you are still building yours may I recommend Trish McEvoy especially this one its the best brush ever http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/trish-mcevoy-29-tapered-blending-brush/2843130?origin=keywordsearch-personalizedsort

        I totally don’t need any brushes, but I WILL try that one! LOL. Yes! Get Berry Bliss crepes – it is enough that my husband and I split one order. There are three, but the one we got to is on Randolph. Seriously though the burnt ends hash at Doves will kill you (if you eat meat).

        • November 30, 2016 at 6:38 pm

          I love the totally don’t need any brushes but I will try that one! It totally brings the MAC crease brush and others to shame its that life changing (in the makeup brush world).
          I am a total meat eater and have a ton of breakfast places to goto will include Doves in the mix (although I like my hash soggy not burnt lol)! Right now we are planning to trek to the Chi burbs (I think Skokie) to get Kaufman bagels and pastrami sandwhiches they are alledgedly comparitive to NYC style.
          We are trying to find new places when we go downtown so Wildberry crepes will up up on the list!

    Most of my shopping was non subscription items (but heavily influenced by subscription box finds) that I’m giving as gifts, so cannot name. But I did get three months of Popsugar and 6 months of Love With Food for myself. And… two full size Mahalo petal masks. I still can’t believe I spent that much on a wash off face mask. But I also still can’t believe how good it makes me look. Thank you again for sharing, Dayle! I would never have experienced the magic if it weren’t for you.

      It makes me so happy that you liked it! Did you get the Josh Rosebrook Cacao Antioxidant mask From November Beauty Heroes? If so what were your thoughts?

        I didn’t, but I’m pretty sure that’s the mask I got from GoodeBeing a couple years ago. If I’m right, it was nice enough, but didn’t do anything special for me. Did it for you? I want everyone to find their miracle mask now!
