Taco Bout It Tuesday: HGTV Obsessions

Disclaimer: These opinions are my own, and I definitely don’t get paid to obsess over HGTV =D The images are mostly all from HGTV’s Instagram, except my garden photo, and all are linked to original sources.

My boyfriend and I watch A LOT of HGTV. Do you?

Here’s a list [in order] of the shows I enjoy:

  • Fixer Upper: How could you not love Chip and Joanna?! They’re so cute. Aside from the fact that pretty much every house Jo does is gray and white, I love watching them together. This season has been pretty fun with different kinds of houses.

chip and joanna gaines

  • Property Brothers: They took some time to grow on me, but after watching them on Playing House [in a pregnant woman’s dirty daydream–click! you won’t be disappointed], I found I liked their sense of humor and started watching.
Fortunately, this season they stopped with the “WHY ARE YOU SHOWING US A HOUSE X AMOUNT OVER BUDGET!?” gimmick, and instead show people what they want without a remodel.
Also, they have less of the fake “I hate remodels” line that every couple has even though they’re on a dang remodel show.
Here’s a behind the scenes clip of Jonathan and Drew talking to Jessica St Clair about removing “shag carpeting”.
  • Love It or List It: The drama is cheesy, and it clearly takes a long time to do all of the stupid camera angles where they pretend they’re conversing and watching the couples, but I like the premise of getting to remodel your house and then potentially choose to buy a new house.
  • Flip or Flop: Super staged drama and sadly a broken marriage, but I like the end result of the houses and the flip premise. After having worked in a construction company that REFUSED to install shitty cheap travertine because it’s a nightmare to install, I laugh every time they put their signature travertine tile in.
  • House Hunter / International: Meh, I’m not really into this show because there’s no host and usually the international one the people have weird expectations. Don’t even get me started on tiny house hunters [ugh]. But, House Hunters is McBoyfriend’s favorite, and I prefer it over COPS.

Apparently there are other shows on the channel that come on at like 3-8am, so I’ve never even heard of Good Bones or most of the other listed in the link at the top. I do also like the one where the woman in Detroit flips one house per season.

I won’t ruin your life with all of the stuff I found out about home remodel shows while I was researching them to inform our customers that real life home remodels are not like tv ones, ESPECIALLY price-wise. However, I did read some articles about their Dream Home Giveaway and wanted to warn you away from that. First, you have to uproot your life, second you have to pay taxes on that million dollar home. Can you afford that? I can’t. One of the articles I read, one guy who won a house went bankrupt and found out several other previous million dollar home “winners” had as well. So, be wary. Though, I think the winner has already been announced or will be very soon.

My garden last spring

Not to brag, but all of the plants in this picture are dead now except for the ferns, which came with the house.

Also, I wish they had G shows! That’s right, Home and Garden Television, I want Garden shows! It would be pretty popular I think right now with the organic and home garden interests. I would love to see different kinds of gardens, like apartment mini gardens, lavish million dollar home gardens, etc. What do you think?

Let me know if you’re into the DIY house shows, if you like to fixer-upper your own house, or if you need me to shun you for hating Chip + Joanna [just kidding, we still love you].

I haven’t seen Fixer Upper, but I’ve been to their store. Magnolia something? We went there one day when we were going to the Texas Ranger Museum (law enforcement, not the baseball team). Adrian is a carpenter by trade, so our house is constantly in the midst of something. He put a new back deck on with a ramp for our four Dachshunds. And in the last year he has built me a tea bar and a makeup dresser. He built all of our tables, cabinets, dressers, pantry, etc. I don’t think we should watch any of those shows. He doesn’t need any more ideas. I don’t like breathing sawdust!

Haha, Susie I love the image of a house full of sawdust. But not to really live that, so that’s okay. What is a tea bar?? I’d love that! I just wrote a bit about my Field to Cup box, and am making sure to drink tea daily so it’s not wasted

I like watching love it or lost it. In that show they show some real problems that can happen remodeling. And I love that they get to choose stay in their remodeled home or move to a new one.
Love love love the tiny homes house hunters. I love all the tiny homes shows. You should see what the tiny homes look like on Tiny Luxury. They are amazing. I don’t remember which tiny homes show it was but this one couple got their tiny house built with their 4 cats in mind. They did some extra things for their cats. The cats even have their own catwalk.
I would love to have my own tiny home that is on a foundation. Probably between 300-400 square feet. That is all I need once I’m done decluttering some more. Maybe have a yard sale. It would be nice to have a little extra cash from decluttering.

Ok farmcat, Tiny Luxury Homes sounds cool! I’d watch that. I just usually get mad when people have kids and want to live in a tiny house because I need quiet space and that has almost always been my bedroom, so I can’t imagine having to share such a small space with so many people. Also, the cat house sounds awesome! I’ll give Tiny Homes another chance

HGTV is our standby-leave-on channel (past standbys were FoodTV and then Travel Channel). We love Property Brothers on Wednesdays especially. We do appreciate the new seasons for the same reasons you mentioned.

I do wish HGTV would have some motivation as the FoodTV has (i.e., see food equals motivation to nom).

Jelly of Susie wished she lived closer then I can convinve her to comission her hubby for projects! Tea bar sounds like a great piece.

Also I vouch with Farmcar with Tiny Luxury Homes. The show gives some great ideas about storage.

Who cannot adore a person nick/named “Chip”!?! Digression aside, I am looking forward to the upcoming Beauty and the Beast and wonder how they will introduce “Chip”.

We watch a lot of HGTV and watched the DIY network when we had that channel (I highly recommend). Fixer Upper is our favorite! Rehab Addict is another good one. A single mom, Nicole, buys rotting old homes and restores them (she basically kicks butt). I haven’t seen that one on HGTV, but it’s on their website.

My boyfriend watches lots of home makeover/remodeling shows. I seen some good ones, but I have no idea what they are called. Our house is a “fixer upper” and the boyfriend has been gutting and re-doing rooms one by one. I’ve helped with a bunch of it, but can’t now because of the bun in the oven….oh darn.

Onderria, have you seen Gardening by the Yard? My mom likes that show. I’m not big on gardening.

Bahahahaha I LOVE the title sometimes I want to write something like that with some over-inflated sub boxes items! Thanks for thinking of me! BTW they now actually have a magazine that reads like a giant advertisement. The magazine I received was attached to one of my free magazine subscriptions (check out Hip2Save for another sort of addiction … she posts when free magazine subs are available)!

Girl, I’m at a house party in the boonies and the lady of the house had some Magnolia magazines so I sat down and read one and McBoyfriend came over and said we should subscribe Also, there was a baby here and now there’s an 8 year old. It’s almost midnight. This kid is legit the logical one between he and his mother He was telling a grown man to stop doing cartwheels in the house!

Now you mentioned it, I might have received Magnolia on more than one occasion attached to one of my free mag subscriptions. I only recall it being in the recent Better Home and Gardens which also came with another magazine… join my free magazine obsession too lol!
