Taco Bout It Tuesday: Snow Days

It hardly ever snows in the Puget Sound area. Well, perhaps like once every few years and it’s a little dusting. However, I think this week makes the third or forth time it’s snowed this winter!

This is also the third snow day my school has gotten! Note that it takes very little snow to shut down this area. My mom laughed at me when I told her we’d gotten perhaps two inches…

animals outside in the snow

Yesterday, Bella and I fed the squirrels and crows in the backyard while she flipped her lid chattering at them.

It’s a little find-it picture for you, as there is a crow and squirrel in this image.

So, I want to know:

  1. What do you think of snow?
  2. What do you like doing on snow days? OR What would you do it you lived somewhere with snow days?

1. I personally do not like snow, as I grew up in the Midwest and spent many 6 hour drives across SD scared that we would end up in the ditch. Again. However, I do love watching it fall [I just don’t like being out on the roads or being cold].

2. On snow days [like today and yesterday] I slept in, had some brunch, made some tea, and got work done. My taxes have been filed and today I start working on my grad school portfolio project.

You don’t want to know how many days in a row I’ve said I’d start working on my portfolio… but hey it might happen one day soon!

This evening around 8 it was 61 degrees but around this time tomorrow night (Wednesday) I might be having a winter storm. I’m tired of the yo-yo weather this fall and winter has been. I don’t mind the snow it is the winter mix that I don’t like. Snow is easier to deal with.
I like to bake when it snows. And also like to get all snuggly warm in blankets and read a book or watch a movie while eating some of the freshly baked yummies.

If I know it is going to snow and I don’t have to work (no snow days in the business world πŸ™ ) I like to get up and take the dogs for a walk if safe. The world is so quiet when there is so much snow and no one driving! After walking I come home and spend the day in the kitchen. I like to make soup or a roast like this. http://www.food.com/recipe/roti-de-pore-a-la-boulangere-145167?photo=81440. Then I start baking. People get fat when I get a snow day!

Winter storms are also the best time for layering on some of those subscription box beauty balms! They really protect skin from the dry air and harsh winds.

Hi Dayle, I was wondering how that worked for non-school jobs! I guess it’s up to a company whether employees are able to work from home or if they can demand that everyone slide across the ice to show up. That recipe sounds tasty, and I added it to my Pinterest dinner board =D Also, good idea with the balms!! Our skin has been dry as all heck–between four people there are three large bottles of lotion in one bathroom.

I hate the snow. I like to look at it, from a warm and comfortable distance but not be in it. I’m from NE Australia originally and prefer my weather in that form: hot and humid. Unfortunately I live in northern Nevada and one of local ski areas just hit 500 inches of snow. We don’t get a lot of snow days here but do get occasional delays. I tend to binge watch Peter Jackson movies and mainline hot chocolate on those days.

That sounds like a good way to spend a cold day! How is the weather in Nevada compared to Australia?

I am ok with snow as long as not being included with sub-zero temps.

Have not had a snow day yet with my little Pnutters yet to comment how it is from the adulting side but I remember having tons of snow days in Bergen County, Jersey and loving sleeping in. Where most of the residents from Real Housewives of New Jersey are from (Franklin Lakes in Bergen County not as well known as Orange or Cook county so they say New Jersey lol), it snows a bit and no buses. They must be allergic to ice as other towns were always able to bus.

Sub zero temps are good to avoid!!

I like how peaceful and pretty it is when it’s snowing. It’s the day after it snows that I dislike. Everything is slushy and then freezes at night. The local news stations made a big deal about the “snowstorm” we were supposed to get the other day, but it turned out to be a dud. It’s like, come on people, this is PA…snow is not a new concept around here! And why does everyone need to go out and buy snow shovels when it snows? What do people do with them? Throw them away after each use or each year? We own a few and we probably won’t need to buy new ones for at least a couple decades. Imma stahp, lol.

Snow days are awesome, but they will never seem as great as the did during childhood (mostly because adulting = shoveling). I’m looking forward to building snowmen and sledding with my own kidling…due in August!!

Kitty chatter is the best! Gizmo likes to chatter at bugs and sometimes birds. It’s my favorite. πŸ™‚

Awwwww congrats on you LC kidling in the inside!
Hopefully it won’t be a humid summer in the East coast when wee LC arrives. I always loved the crisp early morning hours only to be bitch slapped by the sun rays late morning with a topping of humidity by afternoon.

Thank you! This will be my first kidling. Any recommendations for natural (and I’m trying for cruelty free when possible) pregnancy/baby/household products would be greatly appreciated. I already stalk your Grove Collaborative reviews. πŸ˜€

Yes, hopefully it won’t be too humid but I figure summertime will be good because I’ll have less maternity clothes to buy and the warmer weather will be perfect for future birthday parties.

          YW πŸ˜€

Ok here goes in a nutshell.
If you do Grove Co, anything there fits the bill. Also, keep in mind that unlike the Amazon (well in the good old days Amazon price-matched), Grove Co will price match.
Now here is my advice for the Amazon lol. Join Amazon Prime if you have not and then sign up for Amazon Family. All diapers (get Luvs the saying is true) are 20% off Save and Subscribe right to your door no need to buy bulk diapers from the store and bring home without passing Target and paying $200. Seriously. Wipes and all other stuff on Save and Subscribe are 15%. Should be more than easy to get at least 5 items a month to qualify for the 15%/20% discount. I recommend stalking the coupon page for coupons that stack for the following natural products that I rec that I have on my S&S: Amazon Sensitive Wipes (if you are lucky once awhile its 50%!), Babyganics (foam shampoo/bodywash, bubble bath, dishwashing/bottle foam soap, their pricey wipes, antibacterial wipes), Yogi Tea (Mother-to-be tea but only if you drink tea I do not think its necessary if you are not a tea drinker).
Items that fit your request but likely do not have extra coupons that stack with S&S are Method and Mrs. Meyers brand (I think I reach more for the scent factor so I cannot choose one household brand over the other!), Burts Bees (many items particularly the Baby Bee get starting set), Earth Momma Baby Angel (many items such as A Little Something for Mom-to-Be organic gift set), Weleda Skin Food (for your growing/itchy tummy). If you plan to nurse, I recommend Traditional Medicinals Mother’s Milk over Earth Mama and Yogi Tea brands. Amazon also carries the same brands that Grove Co does but I believe I did a price comparison on my first Grove Co review and Grove Co beat out Amazon’s prices especially if you were not purchasing in bulk. What I do not buy at Grove Co I get at the Amazon lol. Lastly, make up an Amazon Baby Registry, you do not need to share it but (1) you will get a box of goodies if you choose something from every category and (2) once a year (provided you reset the date of arrival) you will receive a 15% coupon off selected items from your registry 60 days before the arrival date).

I just went on a family swim this past weekend and wore a bikini. Only when pregnant lol πŸ˜‰ Maxi dresses are your friends pre/during/post pregnancy as well as Old Navy foldover skirts.

LC I also love the quiet peace of falling snow, but dislike the brown slush the day after. Congrats on your tiny human!

Growing up, I loved snow days. I’d walk to a nearby golf course hole with a steep decline and my aluminum disk and sled down until I was cold and wet. When the power went out though, that was a different story. The dirty smell of kerosene lanterns and cooking on the woodstove was not nearly as romantic as you’d imagine.

    • February 12, 2017 at 9:58 pm

Sdbear it sounds like you were staying in a cabin! I do miss sledding for hours, but not the damp of clothing.

Last night was another snow disturbance. On the the farm we had a snow thunderstorm with strong winds. The news said my area had mid fifties miles per hour winds. The snow looked as though it was waved crashing on a beach during a tropical storm. And tomorrow night I am to get snow squalls. So I will probably be having another windstorm with a side of snow.

    • February 13, 2017 at 10:49 pm

That sounds like a very disturbing snowstorm!! Wow. I’ve never heard of snow squalls. I hope your double serving of snowtastrophe with a heaping helping of blustery blizzard makes way for a fruitful Spring!
