Play! By Sephora Subscription Box #042 Unboxing – June 2017

Subscription: Play! By Sephora

Cost: $10.00 and ships free

What to Expect:

5 various beauty and makeup items in a baggie plus an 6th stupid perfume sample that Sephora receives for free and calls it a “bonus” for us. A busy booklet is enclosed with explanations and stuff. There is also a reusable card (depending on the Sephora you go to) that you can redeem for 50 points with any purchase.

Major Gripe: Sometimes Sephora attempts to shill its own brand as one of the items in the box and has the balls not to have it be full sized.

Huge Gripe: Who else is pissed that Sephora had balls to have a Rouge Sephora Play! Box with high-end samples that we never see in our boxes.

BALLS I tell you. This is bananas!

Kick Back and Let’s Get This Box Opened!!!

Flyer with Deets of the enclosed products and the 50 Point Card with any purchase

Play! By Sephora – June 2017

I somewhat read this but lost it reading the fine print…

Play! By Sephora – June 2017

Whoever wrote this piece of work this must think that swatching 30+ (actually its 42 shades) of “Everlasting” liquid lipstick sampling in one sitting must have tried all the Baskin Robbin ice cream flavors in one sitting.

Don’t forget that after you look like you painted your arms with permanent marker a week ago, you can see any Sephora Beauty Advisor who “will help you find the perfect summer hue for you.”

KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in K-Dub

KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in K-Dub

Great brand. Horrible color.

Why even bother Sephora giving us a great brand but off-loading some color the general public does not want!?!

Ouai Rose Hair & Body Oil

Ouai Rose Hair & Body Oil

Thank goodness gracious this was not the Ouai sea salt spray that has been floating for the past few summers in subscription boxes.

Thank you Ouai for switching it up!

It smells rosey and lovely with two pumps on my hands, elbows, knees and toes and I applied the leftover oils on my hair. Ok this made my hair shiny in a good way although one pump by itself would make my long hair look greasy directly applied so I strongly recommend using this as a hand oil and/or dry spot cream and then using any leftover oil left on your hands on your hair.

I do like to smell like flowers at times.

IGK Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel

IGK Rich Kid Coconut Oil Gel

Why label this for rich kids? Are they too rich to use plain coconut oil!?!

Why is the model looking so snooty? Why is the song “I’m too sexy…” playing in my head?

This is too obnoxious for me I will be passing this to a (non-obnoxious?) teenybopper.

“I’m too snooty for this gel”

FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie

FAB Coconut Skin Smoothie

I was hoping this was a fancy body cream (FAB has the best body creams out there!) but alas its for the face. It does not have any (sili)cones so I would just use it for a moisturizer because I need the “cones”.

Not that I have major wrinkles already, but the cones cover up the minor ones I have!

Benefit Cosmetics POREfessional

Benefit Cosmetics POREfessional

I.Love.This. However, this sample is such a tart being in almost every beauty subscription box that I do not need to buy a full size (along with Smashbox). I actually like Benefit over Smashbox too.

YSL Black Opium

YSL Black Opium

As you can see by the picture I used it. To scent the trash.

Great brand. Dated off-loading scent scent.

Hey Sephora! 2014 called and it doesn’t care that you lightened this once heavy scent it still wants it back.

Sephora Box 042

Verdict:

I have such mixed feelings about Play! By Sephora.

I think my comments tell you how I really feel.

If this was a small box subscription, these products would have been ok. But this is big box Sephora.

Also variations make me twitchy.

After writing out this review, it was apparent to me (and probably you) that I should cancel and I did that. I raise my pitchfork high when I see Sephora branded products and/or cray cray colors that Sephora is off-loading on Play! customers.

I just signed up for Macy’s Beauty Box at least the first few boxes will be awesome yes?

What do you think of Play! By Sephora? Have you signed up for Macy’s Beauty Box?

Are you subscribing because FOMO and/or Birchbox Withdrawal?

Please share your thoughts no matter how random below.

Oh my gosh, I love this review! Don’t hold back! I also got that horrible K-Dub color in my Play box along with other items which I’ll actually use. Who would wear that color outside of an 80’s flashback party?

      Thanks Elizabeth!
I know its like spoiler KVD lippy yes please BUT NOT an unusable color!!!!

Yeeeaaah that pink is no good.

    • June 18, 2017 at 8:10 pm

That lippy went too far. Actually not really if it was Sephora branded I would have gone really twitchy anyway the next box is probably due for another Sephora product :/

Is that KVD a bright purple? (It doesn’t look too bad in the group shot at the end…) I got a different color KVD from Love Goodly and I love it! I would like to try the Ouai Rose hair & body oil. And I like the FAB brand in general. Otherwise, I can see your gripes with this box. Awesome review that made me laugh!!

Right now I’m mainly getting Pearlesque (and just signed up for Beauty Heroes today!) plus other boxes sporadically (Target or Amazon if they look good or Love Goodly for the OLO serum and then forgot to cancel) so mostly skincare and not much makeup. I’ve been considering Ipsy again… Not tempted by Birchbox since I canceled late last year – though I’m still Ace for this whole year and buy from there sometimes. I haven’t been too tempted by Sephora either since I cancelled earlier this year, but a little – they usually have 1 or 2 products I’d really like to try.

Oh, and I just signed up for Allure ($5 off the first month so $10 for June) solely for the St. Tropez self tanning sheet mask which I have already tried once for $9 and liked! It’s like getting everything else in the June box for $1. 🙂

The KVD mug shot is pretty much true to color rather than the group photo :/

I am pretty sure I might be skipping Love Goodly this month but I LOVED last month. A little jelly about the Pearlesque and Beauty Heroes this month enjoy!

I am sad about leaving BB last year and will be sadder next year when my ACE status dissapears ACE has great perks I am still enjoying. Its hard to say no when the LE boxes go on sale.

I so want the September Allure box as with everyone else in the sub box world. I wonder whether I should sign up for August’s box just to guarantee September….

I hope you love Beauty Heroes! I am liking my Honua, I didn’t like the scent initially but it has grown on me.

Oh, and hesitant to try Macy’s because of the products in the picture… All things we’ve gotten before. Plus no full size… and I’d rather pay $10 than $15 and get a $5 coupon.

    I hope I’m wrong though.

Heat we are of the same minds you are my spirit animal. I am just hoping that at least the first box or two or three will be awesome sauce and if it continues good for everyone. Maybe it will step up Sephora’s game and maybe I will jump into that bandwagan again.
Ugh. FOMO. The struggle is real.

I loved your review. I’m now curious about September’s box of Allure. I have to go find spoilers for it.

    • June 19, 2017 at 10:19 am

      Thanks Farmcat!
Its partial spoilers of the summer boxes but when you compare the spoilers together September stands out. Although they should all stand out lol. I am pretty sure I will sign up for August to get September and will review it.

I canceled Play after last month, and I have zero regrets! I did get 2 of the Rouge Play! boxes but I don’t know why, I hate perfume and nothing in it is really anything I will use. After trying LaMer, I would have no complaints except for the price. I have taken to calling it Lamer, like it is lame to spend that much money on some lotion for my face that doesn’t make me look like J Lo.

I don’t think Sephora will get any better until enough people cancel. Why should they when people are handing over $10/month to take crappy samples off their hands?

I agree on full size for Sephora brand. I said the same thing on an MSA forum and someone had the nips to tell me she didn’t like full size because if you don’t like it then you have full size. Duh, if you like it, then you have full size too!

I think I am mostly done with sample size subs. I still get Goodbeing, but I canceled it and they reeled me back in with some good customer service. This month 2 Beauty Heroes (but only one next month, Boxwalla Beauty, Goodbeing and the Two Rouge Play!). And I picked up the Target men’s box today for my husband, for $5 and he doesn’t care what he puts on his skin.

    • June 21, 2017 at 7:01 pm

ohhh I get so excited when I meet someone with Rouge status *is weird*
Jelly you got not one but two Sephora’s Rouge boxes.
ITA what you said about peeps dropping Play! to get them to improve or at least give full size Sephora branded samples.
Great incoming boxes you have there!
But for some reason I am not ready to goodbye to sample boxes it must be the now closeted GWP whore I once was before sub boxes came into my life *sigh*

I gave up on Sephora and Birchbox awhile ago. I still love my natural beauty boxes.

    • June 23, 2017 at 4:14 pm

I should really jump off ship like you. No FOMO right now after seeing Sephora first spoilers for July. We will see how Macys treats me in August….
