july 2017 box of fate

I get Cratejoy emails about new boxes, and while I usually just delete them, this box happened to be in one that I opened. Box of Fate is a new box that sends out eco-luxury products from local artisans. This is my first box, but because I ordered it in July, and a second one came to me in July, I’m not sure whether this is a June or July box!

Squeal-worthy packaging!!

I don’t know what these are, but they’re lovely! I can’t believe how well they held up. I put them into a little thumb pot that came in Luxe Pineapple Post last year.

Lot’s of hello info.

My name printed on the card! Sooo fancy =D

It doesn’t take much to win me over, but the thought put into this is just lovely.

A nicely laid out explanation card.

Enough preamble, let’s dig in!

The Art of Fate Esmerelda Sea Bead Stretch Bracelet: $44

This is a cute bracelet that fits nicely without the elastic bothering my skin. Also, McBoyfriend complimented me on my bracelet while I was driving, asked where it came from, then took it off my wrist so he could try it on ;D

He doesn’t own any jewelry, so it was very cute and humorous watching him admire the stretchiness.

I think The Art of Fate branched out and made this Box of Fate, so it’s one of their jewelry products, though they do not have very many items in their shop right now.

Infinite Apothecary Fresh|Face Botanical Toner: 15ml sample size [$24 for 118ml], “Kick blemishes to the curb with this refreshing toner. Antimicrobial essential oils and witch hazel do double duty to keep skin clear without causing dryness.”

One of the reasons I was unsure what month this box was for was because there aren’t really any social media posts, but one of the video reviews I came across had this item in it in March.

It has a nice witch hazel scent that I enjoy. I’ll have to slip this into my morning skincare routine.

Schmiley’s Toothpaste: $10

This is a cruelty free, vegan toothpaste that donates to countries in need. Their toothpaste is actually purchased via subscription that comes with a toothbrush every other month for $10. The flavor is a mild mint, and my mouth isn’t left feeling crazy fresh, but it does the job.

The Schmiley’s website drove me nuts because the Menu button does not work. I really need a UX job so I can get paid to help people make stuff work.

Mes Amies Soaps in Turmeric & Ylang Ylang: $6 for 4oz, “Known for centuries for its beneficial properties, this homemade & vegan turmeric soap is the perfect addition to your sensitive skin care routine!”

Made Georgia, USA with “olive oil, distilled water, coconut oil, sunflower oil, sodium hydroxide, avocado oil, grapeseed oil, turmeric, ylang ylang essential oil.”

I’m usually a little bit skeptical of bar soap, because my skin tends to get parched right away or I get dry skin later. But this Mes Amies Soap is crazy sudsy, and feels quite nice! It also smells pretty good as well.

Beauty Concepts Blotting Sheets: 50 sheets

Which such a run-of-the-mill name, I couldn’t find these.

On the first page of Google… lazy…

I looked a bit more and found that b.c. is owned by a larger organization that just seems to make cheap beauty accessories. An odd inclusion for a box wanting to send local and eco products. They work just fine to blot my crazy oily face, so I guess I can’t complain too much!

Art Cards

These aren’t listed on the info card, but are all lovely, and I hung up most of them on my postcard/letter display wall.

The postcard was created by Helen Dealtry, who specializes in watercolor pieces on canvas and scarves. The Practical Wisdom from Plants image is by Natalya Lobanova, who seems to be both an artist and also a BuzzFeed writer. The image is printed on similar paper as the welcome and info cards, which to me is a bit of a no-no. I’m just hoping the artist knew about it. The other two pieces could be by her, but they are unsigned.

Verdict: Now that I’ve posted this one, my next box is shipping and should be at my doorstep today. While I did enjoy most of the products, I wish there had been some info about the little art cards. I’ve seen a lot of artists on Instagram post about their art being stolen or reused by companies, so I am hoping that is not the case.

As for the value of the box, the bracelet is $44 and everything else adds up to $20ish, for a $64 total. It doesn’t have much information on the website, but the Cratejoy page does state that “Retail value: $100-150+” and “2-3 pieces of designer jewelry by THE ART OF FATE.” Neither of which were true with this box. I’m hoping my next box will be more on track with those statements before angry villagers get a hold of this box!!

What do you think? How would you compare it to other $40 boxes?

Disclaimer: this was purchased by me, and all opinions are my own.

Hmmm. I’ll keep on eye on this one. Looks interesting. Those blotting papers reminded me of the Milk papers. You should watch the video on the Milk site. They are called Blot & Roll. And, yes, it’s just what you think….

Hah, I was confused at first because who wants to smoke my face oils?! But I see they’re saying you can pat your face with one, then roll one with the next.

So rolling papers are the new blotting papers? I fancy my hoarded free Starbucks napkins when I make a rare visit. Mmmmm… toffee nut latte. I digress, great review and I can totally see how this is an Onderria box!

I am so dubious of natural toothpastes and i am not sure why. I never feel as clean after using them but I am sure the feeling does not reflect a reality.

I need to put aside my blotting papers for you. I wish I had some oil lol
