Birchbox Subscription Box Review – April 2019

  • Confession:

I have what is known as a “Cheap Subscription Box Itch Fix”

Because Birchboxes are now only $10 for Aces :/

Birchbox

Subscription: Birchbox

Cost:

Monthly $10-15 depending on status as a new, current, or ACE subscriber.

What To Expect:

At least 5 items allegedly based on a profile.

Kick Back and Get Comfortable:

So after a two year separation from Birchbox because I was sad that they stopped points and would lose my ACE status, I came back.

Our loyal reader Ake put it perfectly that I had an subscription box “itch” to scratch.

And if you missed my first box review of my year subscription, I have put any items that I plan not to use in a “gift pile for you” baggie.

Gift pile for you!

You would appreciate this more if you like the Seinfeld spin reference and/or a hoarder that needs to be brought to reality.

To which I am both.

Theme:

May I present to you the $15 (current subscriber price) or $20 ($5 penalty for non-subscribers) curated box you can now purchase in the Birchbox shop!

$20!?! Nice Alternative Reality Katia must live in a world were everyone thinks she is a goddess and all her ideas are brilliant.

Birchbox

Here is the “apology” letter. Does Katia really wanna know?

It sounds like a boyfriend trying to woo the girlfriend back to stay.

Bonus points for a Text number!

I wonder who has the job of reporting texts to Katia from the above number.

Birchbox

Absent a full size item(s), this is what a $10 Birchbox (with a code) should look like!

The 6th item is no longer called a “bonus”.

Birchbox

Extra: “Consolation” prize code

Not consoled.

Alterna Haircare CAVIAR Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture CC Cream

Alterna Haircare CAVIAR Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture CC Cream

I heart anything from Alterna. This cream is a “kitchen sink” cream of goodness for the hair. It is a white cream that disappears in your hair without any crunchiness. I have a sample in my arsenal of opened hair products and I have at least one more backup of this. This would be a re-purchase if I ever run out of it.

It would be awesome if the product was actually “unicornish” like the packaging!

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super-Curling & Lifting Mascara

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super-Curling & Lifting Mascara

I like this mascara as I have sampled it before and I put it in my backups. It is not magical by any means but it gives good volume and has a fancy brush head and marketing.

It’s not super but it does curl and lift.

Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream

Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream

I have sampled this before and I was going to re-purchase it because it is an awesome sealer after slapping on serum and moisturizer on ma face. But after perusing Sephora in anticipation of buying product(s) for free shipping in anticipating the Sephora Sun Kit, I fell down the rabbit hole of The Ordinary (OMGoodness the affordable prices!!!) and bought 100% Squaline.

Also, because the Sephora Sun Kit sucked this year, I got The Ordinary and upgraded to a year of flash shipping so I don’t need to spend $50 to get free shipping.

I digress, this is still on my wishlist because its a good moisturizer for winter and because I love almost everything Dr. Jart.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate appears to me to be a standard serum for oily possibly normal skin. My skin is normal/dry so it soaked the serum up and I had to moisturize afterwards.

My face was like a slice of bread.

I actually used Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate with the Midnight samples I received in my subscription box journey (a cleanser and eye cream) just to be fancy. The cleanser I reviewed in my last month’s Birchbox review, and I sill recommend it. If I run out of an oil cleanser this would be the one I would re-purchase.

R+Co ANALOG Cleansing Foam Conditioner
R+Co ANALOG Cleansing Foam Conditioner

R+Co ANALOG Cleansing Foam Conditioner

So we all should know how I like falling down rabbit holes. Well… in a past FabFitFun sale, I purchase a fancy boar brush that had samples of R+Co Analog Shampoo and Conditioner. And unlike the brush (which rocked), the shampoo and conditioner sample sucked. I am not going to chance this foam conditioner in the same line to do me any favors so…

Gift pile for you!

Tarte Tarteist Glossy Lip Paint in Token

Tarte Tarteist Glossy Lip Paint in Token

I love anything Tarte for the most part!

Tarte can be a tart in all my subscription boxes!

I know I usually am not a lippy person but I am keeping this little baby. Above is a heavy and light swatch of the product which performs very well as its moisturizing, feels nice, and is long lasting.

That’s what she said.

Before the verdict, here is the sixth month’s Gift Pile For You!

Not too shabby at the half-time mark!

Birchbox

Verdict:

To tell the truth, I have $15 out of $300 to make ACE for next year.

Not loving the LE boxes this year yet like I did the prior year.

If there is a code that brings my year subscription down from $10 to around $7-8ish I will sign on the next year before I lose my ACE status. If I do not make ACE in 2020, then my subscription with Birchbox is done no way am I not going to pay more than $10 for this box of birch.

I like this box. For $10 with a code. Definitely not $15 with or without a code.

Birchbox is not even close comparison to a $15 Allure box. We all know this.

I really hoping that Birchbox really adds deluxe and full size samples with this price increase. At this time, giving two curated options for April does not scream “worth” the price increase at this time.

I digress,

My cheap subscription box itch fix has been scratched.

I wonder whether the itch will go away in another 6 months. Stay tuned.

I like the actual box this month! But I really hope Birchbox steps up its game with the new price hike. I wonder how Allure does it?

I think Allure gets sweet deals since it probably uses the connections it has on its magazine end.
Sooo… next month there are 2 curated boxes with 6 items each and a Birchbox set with 9 items. I hope to get the 9 item set so hopefully its not a tease and gets out of stock in 1 minute because there are 5 of them. I have no interest in the sample choices but I am noticing an improvement each month but more work still needs to be done (in the form of more full size products).

It’s nice that you have the old price locked in for the next six months. Gives them a good stretch of time to prove that they’re worth the new price.

They should hurry it up but at least they have some good leftovers lol!
