ModCloth Stylish Surprise Dress Review – April 2015

ModCloth is a website that has all sorts of interesting clothing available for purchase from different brands as well as their own.  From time to time ModCloth run a “Stylish Surprise” where you basically buy items at a discounted price and are surprised as to what they will actually be. From shoes, accessories, to apartment items and apparel, many rush to stock up on what they think will be a good deal. I bought into the hype so you don’t have to!

You can click here to read my other ModCloth reviews!

This time I bought four dresses each for $20 which was a bigger gamble than last years price point but oh well. A fool is easily parted with her money I guess. Overall my items were meh to my personal tastes.

Muse – White/Nude Striped  Lace Dress: I found this on ebay being sold for like $65 or so. I really liked this dress a lot because you can tell it is good quality. The lining is nice and the material overall is totally worth the $20. My only sad spot is that it is a size 6 and in this dress I would probably be a size 4. I mean I can still wear it without any side eye looks from those flip flop wearing tourists judging my style as I walk to the corner store, but it isn’t the best fit. I am not sure if I will give this to my sister (we can usually fit the same clothing except my feet are HUGE next to hers) or if I will swap it.

As an aside, on the tag it says “white/nude.” I only say this because MY nude is not everybody’s nude and I have been trying to call this color beige. I had an eye opening experience when I studied abroad and I referred to beige as “nude” and was gently educated on how the connotation can make those of color feel. Not to get all PC or whatever, but this dress brought that lesson to mind.

Great to wear the day after Labor Day. When someone mentions the rule of not wearing white the day after you can tell them you are from YESTERDAY and so you are exempt. Look them in the eyes with pity and slight disdain…

Ya Los Angeles – Strapless Dress: I was so sad to get this because it is SO not my style. I do accept that it is the chance I took though. I could not find this on the internet or on ModCloth but I admit I did not spend more than a few minutes to look. I did find a lot of other stuff by this brand and it is on the cheaper side. The dress itself is not super quality as you can see from the top. I can see someone younger wearing this, or someone who can style it. I don’t really style anything I wear because that extra time in the day can be spend sitting down being lazy. Maybe one day! 😉

This is going up for swap or in the Goodwill basket.

Suitable to wear to the rodeo when you had that extra funnel cake and can’t get into your daisy dukes.

BLVD - Blue and Black Dress

BLVD – Blue and Black Dress: I again did not find this dress online but I was able to find one that looked like it on the ModCloth site. It was sold out but about $45. I liked this dress the best because I felt it would do well for work. It ended up  being just a little to small for me to feel it had the perfect fit. I have pretty tall and so my torso can be an issue and this rested just a wee bit to high. The material is a nice quality, but needs to slow dance a bit with an iron.

Wear this on a windy day and you will be the most popular lady in the parking lot!

Nick & Moe – Velvet Lace Dress: This dress, is uh, something huh? I mean really… really… something. I was appalled when I pulled this out because it was so dungeons and dragons to me. I am just not feeling this velvet look at all. It reminds me of a corset outfit I somehow convinced my mom to buy me for a dance when I was going through a lame poser goth faze. I was SUCH a poser I totally thought I looked AHHHmazing. This dress might be playing on those shameful memories or  it could just be an awful dress.

Anna PA or anyone else who needs some cheering up I will consider posting a pic of someone in this dress so you can FULLY see what this thing is. Who knows, it may give you a laugh.

It is a bit too big for me, not that it matter. I am not sure what to do with it. A strange part of me wants to figure out a way to wear this, if only to annoy my sister.

Wear this dress and roll around on your carpet if your vacuum breaks and you need to pick up as much cat hair as you can before people come over!

Overall I suppose it could have been a lot worse! I do think $20 is a lot per items to take a chance especially when you can go on their site and buy sale priced items at the same price and get what you want. I will likely not be doing a dress Stylish Surprise again. No hard feelings, I just argue that it is not a very good deal as a whole.

Oh my, thanks for posting this! I am sooooo glad I did not get anything from their sale and I got close to doing so. I thought that last one was lingerie with the first picture, I want to see that one on someone! The first is not bad, if ithe color works for you and the third might be ok, but the other two……..

I want to see you wearing the velvet dress! And I think you should keep it, It can potentially provide the basis for several Halloween costumes.

I will try to figure out a way to style it for you and take a funny picture. Seriously it could work for SOMETHING Halloween like. It is super ridiculous on!

It has to be you in the dress 🙂 I thought it was lingerie at first. I remember wearing velvet dresses as a little girl. Can the first dress work as a tribal print for the accessory from Wantables? You don’t want me styling you 🙂

Ohh we should all have a funny styling thread! I’m going to Portland Oregon tomorrow (my home away from home away from home as it were) and should pair the velvet dress with jeans and a coat with a the necklaces I own and be the star of the food pods lol

LOL. You should go on a sub box tour in Portland. I’m surprised how many boxes come from that area.

I’m sad that one portland box went under. I am toying with doing some posts on the trip. I bought the Pok Pok vinger soda to try and am going to go to a tea place that was in some box (I forget now which one) because it is close to my place. Hmmmmm

LOL that velvet one was pretty expensive! I remember it because I actually loved it. It fits my aesthetic though (not Dungeons and Dragons lol, but vintage). I didn’t want to pay full price, which was …$70/80 or maybe even upwards of $100?? Shocking I know. It’s pretty in a quaint victorian way. If you want to get it off your hands how much would you sell it for??

First, I wanna say sorry for the jokes about the dress lol It just totally is not me, and often I run out of things to say when writing reviews so I reach a lot. I forget that people don’t like the stuff I like and all that. Just so you know!

It is mid-swap but the swap looks like it is going to fall through. If it does I will send it to you free. It does have a pretty back, and someone who can rock the look should be using it!

Thank you so much for reading!
