Birchbox Review – May 2015

(Disclosure: If you click on my Birchbox link and sign up they give me 50 points which is $5 that can be used toward an order. If you decide you do not want to click my link then go to www.birchbox.com to take a peak at the site!)

Birchbox sends out about 5 deluxe sized samples a month of various brands in the beauty category. If getting into subscription boxes is an addiction then Birchbox is the gateway box so to speak. I am sure one day they will have an after school special type movie where all these women are pressuring another to “just try Birchbox, with the bonus sign up points it is like the first one is free,” and “Don’t you want to try be cool and try all the new products?” A super innocent subscription box virgin will have to decide if she will take the plunge to be apart of the crowd. Will she do it and forever change her life? The movie could be called something like “Box Junkies Behind Closed Doors” or “A Box Addicts Journey” I dunno, I am still playing with the script.

Birchbox cost’s $10 a month but if you review your items then you get a credit of 10 points for each one which is $1 to use in the store. Points can only be spent in increments of $10. Which take no time to get. They have the best point system out of any box I have tried!

They also have fun options during the month where you can pick on sample or pick a curated box. These change every month and it is fun to decide what I want to get. I find if I pick a curated box that I get it much earlier in the month then if I choose any other option.

Birchbox

It arrived looking springlike! It had a theme of “Cupcakes and Cashmere” which is someones blog or something. The blog looks too nice and put together for the likes of me. Though it makes me want to be more put together and have the sort of life where even saying “Cupcakes and Cashmere” doesn’t sound ridiculous coming out of my mouth. My life is more like “Wine and More Wine” or “Cats and Crazies.”

Inside
Inside

Inside there is a nice little note from the curator. I honestly zoned out while reading it and just looked at the food on the table. Do you think whoever was eating that piece of cake is done with it? Can I have?

Benefit Cosmetics - Total Moisture Facial Cream:
Benefit Cosmetics – Total Moisture Facial Cream:

Benefit Cosmetics – Total Moisture Facial Cream: Score! I love Benefit! I can totally use this product because I have super dry skin. I always look sort of dull without moisturizer and this one is awesome. I was rather surprised at how heavy this sample is!

It says to apply a nickle sized amount which is the perfect reason for going through my robust nickle collection!

Coastal Scents - Revealed 3 Eyeshadow Quad (Desert Bloom)
Coastal Scents – Revealed 3 Eyeshadow Quad (Desert Bloom)

Coastal Scents – Revealed 3 Eyeshadow Quad (Desert Bloom): I have both Revealed 1 and 2 full pallets as well as quads that were sent out before. I love this as a sample because these small shadows are perfect for giving the colors a try. I wish Doomsday Prepping were still  in vogue because then I could go on and on about how this would be perfect for any woman’s bug out bag.

The colors are not my favorite for my skin tone but it was fun. I like the pallets a lot and while I will argue that they are not the best quality they are very good for the price point.

If the Apocalypse comes I won’t be caught without pretty eyelids!

Harvey Prince - Sea Salt Texturizing Mist
Harvey Prince – Sea Salt Texturizing Mist

Harvey Prince – Sea Salt Texturizing Mist: I wonder why Birchbox keeps trying to make the Harvey Prince brand happen? I keep getting product after product from this brand. They must have a zillion perfumes! I laughed when I picked up this really small sample. I don’t think it will be enough to even really give it a good enough trial run. Maybe because they send out so many perfume samples they felt that the size of this sample was big enough. I cant be sure about this or really much else in life.

I will keep his sample as a testament to the tenacity and can do spirit of Birchbox. They will make HP happen if they have to send out a zillion of their products out!

Jurlique - Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum
Jurlique – Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum

Jurlique – Herbal Recovery Advanced Serum: Jurlique reminds me of Zoolanders “Derelicte.” Now I am laughing at all the Zoolander jokes I can remember and it is tough to review anything. While this decidedly does not contain fresh garbage water, it does have natural ingredients meant to battle the “first signs of aging.” First Signs?!? Uhhhh it is a little late for that…

With all the natural herbs in this, I could probably use it to marinade something!

Macadamia Professional - Hair Oil
Macadamia Professional – Hair Oil

Macadamia Professional – Hair Oil: The name “Macadamia Professional” makes me want to meet the person who decided on it. I want them to walk me through their whole train of thought. I want to understand and also share in their vision. I also bet they have tasty yummy snacks, I can just FEEL it. I love hair oil because I bleach my hair and it is super dry. This works well and this little sample will last long enough to make it an actual habit. Also I have to note that it was also heavy.

Should I get into a car chase I can always drop this bottle out of the back of my car creating an oil slick for my pursuer!

Verdict: I am happy with my Birchbox and was glad that I did not have time to look up what I got online because it was a true surprise to see what was in it! I I like that they mixed skin, make up, and hair samples in and I will have fun trying things out.

That Harvey Prince is a hair spray, not perfume btw. LOVE the script idea of people pushing others into boxes with Birchbox. I get two boxes this year, one I could only use 1 sample out of it. The other was much better. I love Birchbox, good way to try things for not much money and you get bonus points for doing reviews.

Oh sorry my writing sucked! I meant the sample is sooooo small it might as well be perfume. I have thin hair and I doubt it’s enough to do the job! Only 1 you could use?!? I’d be super sad face. I love Birchbox because getting the box is such a roller coaster of emotions!!!

Yeah 1 sample out of 5, I have an allergy to a preservative and it cuts out about half of all products. I have always had what I called a ‘sleepy eye’ where my eyelid half covered my eye. When I started getting boxes and using new products both of my eyes got very swollen. Figured out what it was and my ‘sleepy eye’ disappeared. I just have to accept the fact that some months won’t work for me because of it, and just swap a lot more than I want to. Post Office loves me….

The other BIrchbox had 4/5 that was good, and it had some really fun samples so that helped. Usually one box is better than another, been playing with my profile.

I have bad luck with mascaras. My eyes hate them. I love one by Benefit (They’re Real) but they make me cry. Still that mascara really does make eyelashes look great!

Pur Minerals mascara doesn’t bother my eyes, the sacrifice we make for beauty.

I need to try that out. I used to try to go with no mascara but it does look a little weird. My lashes are not full or dark.

Oh and the script would be a funny weekly thing. I wish I was a good writer and could just make something like that happen. Funny subscription box fan fiction haha

      • May 19, 2015 at 2:04 pm

That would be very funny! Are you getting Oui Please this month? If so, do you have shipping info on it?

I’ve been missing out on the conversation! I want to know if you hit over $250.00 on Oui Please. You really need to read their Privacy Policy Point 4 Payment Fees. It’s a doozy. Did you make it to the gym. I did not buy a battery charger today although I did make it to the post office 🙂

I made it to the gym but didn’t work out hard. I am proud I even got to it though lol I will read there payment stuff, is it on facebook or just website? I have boxes still being sent to my old addy which is annoying as hell. I changed them in the systems and everything! My box is over $300 for sure. I am working on the post now. I just need to finish up my ipsy (I keep jumping from each one) But I am happy with my box. I got socks! woot!

Great job on making it to the gym! I’m glad that the OP box worked out to you!!! I can’t wait to read what you received. The privacy term is on the home page in the bottom right corner. Click on privacy and go to section 4. I’m going to put on my French Lavender Oil and make believe I received beautiful lavender items from France. It’s the lavender that is getting to me.

I love receiving socks. I received a pair last month in my New England Sack and practically swoon.

My products didn’t have a super amount of lavender. I got the pouch of it, so the box smelled like it. I will get that up as soon as I can. I like lavender, but it seems like a ton of people dislike it. Blows my mind personally but I guess people are allergic. On time I was at a winery in the gold country and they had dried lavender EVERYWHERE which made every single wine they served taste of it. I still bought a bottle hahaha

Socks are always a super score for me because it is something I can put to use right away. I like Ozone a lot. I have no heard of that box!

WHOA, I think they can TRY to get their fees back but usually that stuff will go to collections and then you can fight it. I am no lawyer but that is crazy that they will keep charging you if you don’t pay. At some point they have to mitigate their own damages.

I need to read that, but probably when I won’t go write them another email, but a nasty one

My first comment was supposed to align under your last comment.

I love the first paragraph about BirchBox. So true! I also like the closeup pictures of the items. I enjoy reading BB reviews and seeing what everyone receives. This month I received Harvey Prince Yognini which I liked, Smash Box Photo Finish Primer Water which I am still not sure what it is, the Marcelle Hydra-C 24 H Energizing Hydrating Gel wich I think I can try,the hair oil which is my PYS, and the same Coastal Scents palette. I won’t touch the eye shadow because of my eye disease. It is made in China.

I like to see the different birchboxes as well! I want a reprt on the water. I use a water to clean my face gently and love it. I had no idea they were made in china! I just find it weird that quality differs from one color to the next. It is odd
