ModCloth Stylish Surprise Dresses Review – September 2015

Disclosure: The ModCloth link takes you to a post with an affiliate link. The box was paid for by me.

I ordered two Modcloth dresses at $20.00 each during the recent ModCloth Stylish Surprise Sale . I ordered an XL to ensure that everything fits properly.  I was not planning to model the dresses. It was hot and humid today so please excuse my hair.

Fever London Occasion Madeline Dress:  The black dress is made out of polyester and nylon. I hate the feel of it.

I was overheating when I tried on the dress. The label states it is a size 14.

My husband said I looked like I was wearing a garbage bag. NEXT!

The dress looked like it had possibilities if it wasn’t for the dots.

Peggy by Karina Dresses: The dress material is 96% polyester and 4% spandex.

The dress is washable and wrinkle-free. A dream come true!

The style of the dress is forgiving. My husband said the dress looked psychedelic and the dots glow in the darkness of the house.

Verdict: ModCloth Stylish Surprise requires an adventurous spirit.  I will wear the polka dot dress. I doubt I will wear the black dress because of the material. It makes me feel too hot.

Send me your ModCloth photos at subbellaboxes at yahoo dot com. I’ll do a post on them.

    I LOVE THE DOT DRESSSSS!!!!!!

The black one could be retro. I hate cheap fabric as well. Still I don’t think it looks like a garbage bag. I have noticed menfolk and bears tend to read our reactions to the clothing and then they take cues from that to give their opinion. Maybe some pearls with the dress and some gloves… you can drink scotch with a bit of soda and yell randomly “NO WIRE HANGERS!!!!!” for the neighbors to hear….

My neighbors think I am strange already 🙂

Wow! Glad I did not bite on their boxes. That fabric makes me itch just looking at it. The polka dot would be ok with a different color around the polka dots though.

      Shana! How are you?

The strange thing is that the dress is lined with 100% cotton.

I’ve been thinking about you (both in creepy and not creepy ways take your pick)

I should add that I am standing uphill from my husband. I should stand on level ground!

How much was the dress option? I think that polka dot dress is awesome and looks great on you! The black one looks dated, not retro, to me (sorry!), though I kinda love Subsceiprionista’s pearls and gloves suggestion (own the look, no?).

Dresses are $20.00. I received a wedding renewal type dress from the spring sale. I’m still waiting on my husband for that renewal ceremony 🙂

You could freak him out and set up a bunch of dolls and stuffed animals and make him pretend it was one.

I’m so displeased with mine. I ordered 2 apparel and 2 shoes. I could’ve taken that $54 I spent and thrown it out in the street and received the same result. I realize it’s luck of the draw, but I’d expect to at least have one thing I even liked enough to wear, and I was 0 for 4. As to the comments about cheap material: both apparel items I got look like something from your local big box store at best, and can be had from there for less than $15. Retail value is supposed to start at $29.99 (per ModCloth’s page when the SS was active). I feel totally ripped off. 🙁

I actually spent A LOT of time and was able to find the items on their website. The two apparel items I found are different colors and I *cannot* find the actual colors I received at all, but otherwise they are the exact same thing. The retail values on all but one pair of shoes was less than the “guaranteed” (?) $29.99…by about $5 on three items. The *raspberry scented* (yes, you read that right) flip flops retailed for $34.99. I figure if I’m going to email them to complain I should at least have evidence! Haven’t emailed them yet, but will see how it goes.

P.S. If anyone is curious as to what “raspberry scented” shoes smell like, go to the fishing section of any store that sells fishing bait, and open a package of the gummy artificial fishing worms…lol I’d probably like them if I was younger, as in maybe teenager younger, but I will be 38 years old next month and was over fruit scented items well before I graduated high school! haha 😀

I love the dot dress but both looked like they were a tad too small for you and the fit can really affect how it looks. I would call the dot dress a win-a taylor might be able to let it out-and a huge no on the gothic looking black monstrosity lol

Kerri, thank you for commenting! I agree with you. Thank you for the tailor suggestion.

Also I don’t mean that in a snotty way. I hope my comment didn’t come across as mean. Just sometimes even a teeny bit snug ruins the fit of a dress. I really like your blog and your cats are gorgeous! !

        • September 28, 2015 at 9:38 am

Kerri – Thank you for the compliments 🙂 No worries! It’s not a snotty comment. I don’t want to walk around looking like a stuffed sausage. I can see where the dress is puckering up around the band instead of laying flat. I won’t even discuss the top part LOL. It does make a difference.

You didn’t come off as snotty and we all have different ideas of what fits and what we like. That is why this is a safe place to share it. It’s not personal. Sub Bella is the nicest out of all of us and she is the first to ask for what people really think. I’m more of the hot headed one LOL and I still didn’t think you meant anything buy it. She could surely sell or swap stuff she doesn’t want.
