Darby Smart Box 1 of the Mystery Holiday Box Trio Subscription Review – October 2015

Disclosure: There are no affiliate/referral links in this post. This box was paid for by me.

I love to craft. My enthusiasm exceeds my ability and time. I received an email from Darby Smart about the Holiday Box Trio.  There is a discussion section on the page where Darby Smart indicated that it had enough crafts to be done by a family. That sold me on the Holiday Box Trio.

Subscription: Darby Smart Holiday Box Trio   – sold out.

Darby Smart also offers a monthly subscription for $19.00/monthly.

Cost: $69.00 for 3 holiday craft boxes

What to Expect: According to Darby Smart’s website –  Each of the 3 boxes in this holiday trio is packed with fun and trendy craft supplies to make holiday themed projects. We ship you a surprise box for the next 3 holiday months: Halloween, Thanksgiving and Holiday.

ETA: Darby Smart has a Holiday Box Duo for $55.00

This review is for Box 1 aka the Halloween Box. Darby Smart also offers a monthly mystery box. Be sure to check out Mailbox Junkie’s October 2015 review. I love the design that she used for the project. The project is different than the items listed here.

First Look
First Look

J and I were excited when we first opened the box. A haunted house kit, a pumpkin decorating kit, and possibly a craft for me.  We were so excited that we did not read the directions! I thought I would read them once I was ready to do the blue box.

Adult crafts for me! I did notice that something was missing or was it?

William and Sonoma Haunted House Kit: This Haunted House kit is much better than the Darby Smart Halloween Kit I received last year as part of the regular mystery box subscription. I’m glad that this year we received a much, much better kit.

The pieces are more substantial than the kit we received last year. I was not allowed to help because now it is a tradition that J and Daddy decorate the house.

About a hour later I was called over.

They both started to eat the house after I took pictures. At least they waited for pictures.

Food is not safe in this house!

Tulip DIY Halloween Glow Paint Pumpkin Kit: Sorry, Darby Smart. J wanted to use all the paints on our two small pumpkins.

Large Stencil

The stencil was too large for our pumpkins.

J had a lot of fun decorating two pumpkins. They did glow a little bit. He used up almost all the paint. I decided it was time to work on the BOO and took out the materials for it.

Boo Hanging Sign: There was no paint in my little blue box! I was perplexed because one of the reasons I love Darby Smart is that it includes everything that you need to complete the craft. It is perfect for someone who hasn’t crafted in awhile and is open to trying different types of craft.

I looked online at the directions and saw that Darby Smart expected us to use the pumpkin paint to decorate the pumpkins and the remaining crafts. Or you can use what you already have. Did you see the above pictures? I called J back to the table. He reluctantly used what little paint was left to paint the BOO. I do have more paint in my craft corner of shame. I wasn’t going to take the risk that it was dried up paint. The sign barely glows in the dark. It can’t be seen in the pictures.

Front of the tote

A tote was included to decorate with the idea of using the paint and stencils.

Back of the tote and 10 bags

The back of the canvas tote is blank. There are also 10 medium cloth bags to stencil. I could have done without the advertising on the tote. I haven’t decided if I will decorate the tote. I am leaning towards letting J pick a stamp out at the store and stamp the bags. Or I might stencil them. J did stamp one cloth bag with dinosaurs. Look for a future update!

Verdict:  Read the directions!  J and I were happy with the crafts received. The only thing I would change is to include another set of stencils and additional paint. J and I are looking forward to our Thanksgiving box.

    Oh my the cuteness!
That is thoughtful to think of a halloween house! Definitely thinking outside the box.

J was happy. He loves decorating houses.

hmmm, what kind of paint was that? I think that would be my only complaint too. Expecting the paint to work on pumpkins, fabric and wood is a little of a stretch for any type of paint no matter the amount you get. Other than that, it looked like you guys had so much fun!

I tossed the box. It’s glow in the dark paint. It was difficult to work with when painting the stencil.

I love this review! The Haunted House was a great inclusion in the box and I am surprised your husband and son made it before eating it. That would not happen in my house…

I noticed the one side look like a piece was broken off. After all, I left them alone for about a hour 🙂
