Little Lace Box Subscription Review – October 2015

Little Lace Box is a lifestyle subscription box that graces my cat hair covered condo every other month. Sometimes when I think about it, I imagine the curators shocked faces that the box they took so much time to perfect and theme is sitting next to a woman with a red wine joker smile and a bowl of Trader Joe’s Baconaise Popcorn.

Sorry bout that LLB!

Cost: $59.99 every other month and less with a longer subscription

Looks like they changed the sticker…

Little Lace Box

The theme this month? Authentic Autumn. Your Style. Your Way.

Fall Pashmina (Cashmere Rose
Fall Pashmina (Cashmere Rose

Fall Pashmina (Cashmere Rose): As much as I hate to admit it a scarf or pashmina really does fit what most people would think of as “Autumn.” It is not anyone’s fault that I don’t tend to wear a ton of scarves because I live in Sunny San Diego. I can think of at least one person *cough* Sub Bella *cough* who would maybe make use of this!

It is very soft. I did not see a brand name, so I don’t know where this was sourced or if it was an up and coming designer. I will agree that this fits in with the theme well.

The wool comes from the Pashmina Goat… Coincidence? I think not.

OFRA – Liquid Lipstick (Santa Ana)
OFRA – Liquid Lipstick (Santa Ana)

OFRA – Liquid Lipstick (Santa Ana): I am sorta on the fence on OFRA cosmetics. I like that it is run by women. I just did not really get a lot of real world use out of all the OFRA I was sent by LLB before in the Serindipity box. This color is really pretty and is a great autumn shade. I can see this being a nice little gift.

Last’s up to 5 hours without eating and drinking… which is a lot longer than I can last in a day.

OFRA – Eye Gel Primer
OFRA – Eye Gel Primer

OFRA – Eye Gel Primer: I use eye primer so this is useful. I noticed the third ingredient is Urea. That was worrisome but I guess a lot of products use Urea and it is even a way to treat some skin conditions. I am on deciding still if I want to put this on my eyes because I have sensitivities and can’t really go around with big puffy eyes. However, those without sensitivities might love this!

LLB says this will stop “worn off spots that make us look like we rolled out of bed with yesterday’s eye make up!” Is that like, a bad look cuz I am guilty of that every single weekend…

OFRA – Absoolute Face Primer
OFRA – Absoolute Face Primer

OFRA – Absoolute Face Primer: LLB is in love with this primer. I don’t usually use a face primer unless I am putting on a more evening look. This is a large bottle and may or may not be your thing. LLB says they put this product to the test in the Florida humidity. Autumn here in San Diego isn’t super humid, but I do sweat when walking up the hill I live on!

I am at this point surprised to get so many OFRA cosmetic products in this box… Does OFRA mean Autumn?

Tea Forte - Lemongrass Yuzu Mints
Tea Forte – Lemongrass Yuzu Mints

Tea Forte – Lemongrass Yuzu Mints: Pretty cute little package and I am pretty sure most people who have to put up with my pizza breath would agree that any season is a good season for me to keep my breath fresh! They say these are all natural but I noticed artificial sweetener in it so, no.

Any time is a good time for fresh breath said everyone!

Tea Forte – Honey Yuzu Green Tea
Tea Forte – Honey Yuzu Green Tea

Tea Forte – Honey Yuzu Green Tea: This little sample bag of tea matches the mints which is cool. It is also a cute little bag of tea! I think tea fits the Autumn theme. It is too bad there is not more tea, or that this was not from a less commercially known tea company.

The little leaf on the bag gets me every, single, time.

Travalo Skyline – Portable Fragrance Decanter (silver)
Travalo Skyline – Portable Fragrance Decanter (silver)

Travalo Skyline – Portable Fragrance Decanter (silver): This is cute and I can see it being useful for those who have a signature scent they must carry with them. LLB says they learned the hard way trying to bring a whole perfume bottle with their carry on. I would never ever travel with a full bottle of perfume because of how I learned the hard way…

You see, it was my sisters bachelorette party and we all over packed and were squished in the car. So stuffed with bags that I was in the back seat with my sisters bag on my lap. No problem I am like a cat and can survive small spaces. It was about 40 mins into the drive that I started to notice a not so familiar feeling in my uhhh lap shall we say. I lifted up the bag and noticed that something was leaking from my sister bag on to me. It was her bottle of perfume! Not only did the car reek but after about 20 more mins I started to feel an uncomfortable burning sensation in a very delicate area as the perfume finally seeped through my jeans.

She wouldn’t stop the car. Told me to deal with it. Once it was burning enough I started to scratch at her and tell her to pull over the car somewhere so I could take care of the pressing problem. I had to threaten to tell on her to our mother! Sheesh.

Anyway, leave the whole bottle perfumes at home!!!

I know the PERFECT person to give this to!

Little Lace Box

Verdict: I was a bit disappointed in this month’s LLB. It lacked really any exciting product and while some were useful it was far too cosmetics heavy for my liking. I also was hoping to see more up and coming new designers/companies and while OFRA may be a nice company it has been featured before. There just wasn’t a mix of products and it wasn’t curated as nicely as boxes in the past. Obviously  not everything is going to be for me, but having so many cosmetics from the same brand and only one real lifestyle item took the winds out of my sails for a box I was looking forward to getting. I hope this was a bump in the road and that December’s box will be better.

The theme looks interesting:

This box is a total bummer. Makes me wonder what is up with this company…..

The goats are at it again (but I would rather have them curate the next box than get more OFRA in December)

LOL The goats do some good now and then. But who knows if this is all apart of their huge master plan? I get why they like OFRA but it shouldn’t be the whole box.

      • November 6, 2015 at 8:19 am

I love this! Tell the angry villagers villaging to “take it up with the goats!”

    • November 6, 2015 at 8:21 am

I wonder “What would the goats do?” OFRA definitely the 2015’s Purlisse but I think a box spoiler from I forgot was a Purlisse product next month! Goats need to put candles in our boxes less OFRA 🙂

I feel the same. LLB is pretty much my favorite of the ones I subscribe to, but this one felt a little off, and I was surprised at all the OFRA filler. I do love OFRA and will use them (the primer really is the bees knees!), but it seemed a little strange to have so much of it when A) LLB already has a beauty product sub and B) said beauty product sub was filled with OFRA already. But usually, LLB is on their game, so I’m not super unhappy. Every box has an off month right? Some have more (I’m looking at you, Pop Sugar).

Ps. If anyone happens to wanna swap scarves, I got the pink and would rather have had the winter white!

This box seems more springy. There’s nothing about it that screams AUTHENTIC AUTUMN to me. I tried to subscribe to this box over the summer, never got any response, then came the angry MUT and MSA battles with the company and I backed away quickly, tucking away my credit card.

The lavender scarf I found in my box definitely does not scream Autumn to me. Nor do makeup primers (although I will happily use those once I have used up the 5 million other primers I have). What this box did scream to me was “money problems.” I hope it was just a curation fail and not a matter of them cramming in whatever they could get a good deal on , because I have 6 months left on an annual sub, but I’m starting to get concerned.

Has anyone here ever dyed wool? Does it take color fairly well? Because the more I think about it, the more I am certain that neither I nor anyone I know would ever wear an Easter egg colored scarf, and this might be the perfect opportunity to attempt one of those ombre dye jobs that Pinterest makes look so easy.

That’s assuming it’s actually wool and not some sort of polyester…I wouldn’t be too sure. These look like the pashminas that get sold from carts on the street.

            November 5, 2015 at 1:35 pm

Yeah, I’m not sure why I assumed it was wool. I haven’t taken it out of the plastic bag yet to fully inspect it, so I guess that was wishful thinking.

            November 5, 2015 at 5:34 pm

Haha, the tag on it says “100% Pashmina”. So going by that, and since pashmina is “cashmere wool” (thanks, Google!) I guess you can say it IS wool??? This is my best/final answer, lol 😛

I hope it is, Sarah! I know nothing about pashminas, so your guess is as good as (or probably better than) mine.

      • November 5, 2015 at 11:37 am

I totally agree about the money problems thing. I wondered about that when they started sending out their own products (sugar scrub and lotion).

“Last’s up to 5 hours without eating and drinking… which is a lot longer than I can last in a day.” Ditto! I can barely go 3 hours without needing to nom! I like eating smaller portions of food every few hours.

That perfume on the lap story – omg! That’s awful and I can’t believe she wouldn’t pull over!! You make it sound funny now but I think I’m traumatized just from hearing about it…

I wouldn’t be too happy with this LLB box either. 🙁

    • November 5, 2015 at 11:09 am

What was the perfume name? That would have been interesting especially if it was a love/hate fragrance like Angel those convos are always interesting!
      Funny review and one liners!
Offra is getting old and sub box whorey but I can also vouch that primer is awesome.

And I know I have beyotched about this on another blog site, but seriously – one teabag?? ONE??

    • November 5, 2015 at 11:36 am

But bad kitty, they’re FANCY teabags at $1.50 a piece! I’ve gotten into tea more, and it’s a spendy little habit, but it helps keep me warm. Buuuttt $15 for 1.06 oz of tea, that is a little on the higher end.

Here, this is 2oz of Teavana tea for $10. http://www.amazon.com/Teavana-Weight-Pu-erh-Tea-2oz/dp/B007FRACPE/ref=pd_sim_325_7 No silken baggies or cute green leaves, but minty strawberry sounds fabby!

$1.50 for a single teabag? No. Just…no. I don’t care if it has a fancy little leaf on top. For that price, I’d better damn well get a second cup out of it.

    great review and great comments.

Mailbox junkie I need your help! Can you see how to make Hawaiian banana bread that appears veiny when cut? For example the banana bread from Road to Hana is veiny and when we had banana bread in the islands of Hawaii it was all veiny. I cannot get banana bread in the mainland veiny or even as nommy as banana bread! If you can find a recipe and/or technique my tummy would be very happy 🙂

      • November 5, 2015 at 1:36 pm

FYI I have googled and tried the Julia’s best recipe and others with no luck. There must be something secret like made by love of a aloha maiden…

      • November 6, 2015 at 9:21 am

Yes! I can get you a recipe! One thing most people don’t know is that we wait to use the bananas until they are dark dark brown. That brings the sugars out. Do you have any food allergies? I have a good recipe that includes sour cream in it

I was disappointed as well. I usually love all the boxes. This one was too beauty heavy for me. I like a mixture of items. I got and yucky color of lip gloss. But I am excited for next month. They have been awesome too me customer service wise and I think everyone is entitled to an off month.

  8. November 5, 2015 at 5:09 pm

I’ve been thinking about this box. I don’t understand it. It’s missing that special something that made LLB a hot and upcoming sub box company. A special marquee item. I hope LLB returns to its roots.

I did not receive the box, but I don’t think the scarf is made out of wool. It doesn’t look like it from the picture.

I am really glad I quit my sub with them. I don’t really like anything in the box. Unless you are brand new to subscription boxes these items are all been there done that. This is a far cry from their downton Abbey box and an even further cry from autumn.

I picked up an extra December box w/a Groupon, so fingers crossed they get back on track…last year’s Christmas box was probably the best subscription box I’ve ever gotten. I still love that amazing huge scarf.

I neither loved nor hated this box. All of the products will be useful to me though (except the mints I tried one and didn’t care for them). The eye and face primer are fabulous and the tea was nice. I didn’t think I could get away with wearing that color lip (I received the same one as in the review) since I am a super pale auburn haired girl but it actually works. It is a bit too bold for work though (I’m a teacher). I’m not a big scarf/wrap person but I like the style of the pashmina and it is a high quality fiber product (I used to judge wool products in high school for 4-H).

I wonder if I can get another set of parentheses in my reply (sure I can).

I just want to take a moment and say I would love to know more about your 4-H experience and judging of wool. I grew up super urban in the Bay Area (oakland area) and that is so interesting!!!!!! I am sending mine to Sub Bella because I won’t wear it even in the cold. I am not as put together as most. LOL on parentheses!!!!!!

      • CeciliaA

        The excitement of fiber judging!

After my family moved to the US (from rural Indonesia) we lived in a small town in Nevada, the county I grew up in has 17,000 square mils and less than 50,000 people. I started in 4-H to show horses and ended up thrown into judging when my club was down a person before a county competition so I learned how to judge hay and fiber. For the hay we had to be able to name the type of hay and give general assumptions about the quality and protein content based upon a small sample. For fiber judging we were given a sample as either a woven product or a combed product and a magnifying glass. Fibers are basically judged by the thickness of the fiber and how tightly it is wound. The thickness of the fiber gives its grade (a finer fiber receives a higher grade). The tightness is the crimp; finer wool tends to have a higher crimp per inch. Based upon that information we had to give the wool a grade and determine the species (alpaca vs. sheep vs. goat). If the sample was from a sheep we had to have a general idea as to the breed of sheep as well. Goat and alpaca are easily distinguished from sheep wool because both are much more fine. Pashmina is actually a breed of cashmere producing goat. For sheep the breed distinction can be more challenging with the exception of some of the higher end wool producers (the Rambouillet and Merino breeds) with the better known meet breads (such as the Suffolk). I actually won 3rd place in a state judging competition.

I moved to Reno for my undergraduate education and then to Columbus, Ohio for grad school. I actually prefer to live in a small suburb of a larger city. There are problems with small town life that people don’t tend to realize.

        • November 10, 2015 at 10:45 pm

CeciliaA, your 4-H experience sounds completely different than mine! I grew up in the “city” in South Dakota, and recall using leather stamps to make a keychain, making a dreamcatcher, learning to frost a cake, and the best: competing in a table setting competition [I did not place]. Though, I did also sew a t-shirt that was actually pretty great, and a wool poncho that immediately fell to pieces.
