Hole In Wall Box Subscription Review – December 2015

Hole In Wall is a subscription that wants you to get around, but like, not in a way that would shame your parents our super pious pet. They want you to feel like a local, and get a taste of each city they visit while at the same time let you save on airfare and the trouble of choosing a travel partner because that choice can be tedious indeed.

They are committed to bringing you a legit local experience right out of the box. So while they might not want to bring you the feeling of staying in a super small hotel room. They do want to bring you the best of the city in artisan form!

I do want to take the time to say that I enjoy that their name isn’t something that is supposed to bring about some idealized version of a city. I don’t want the Disneyland version of a city when I put down my hard earned cash, I want a real taste.

Cost: $35 plus shipping a month and less with longer subscriptions.

This month? My home of of San Diego! WOOOT!

Pine Tree Road – Oats and Honey Facial Soap Bar: Right when I opened the box I could smell the soap and it was awesome! It has a fresh scent that says “use me in the mornings to get that bounce in your step.” Those of you who know me are aware of my aversion to using any soap on my face so this will be an awesome morning clean bar! Seriously smells so amazing!

Pine Tree Road is actually a shop I have been to and love. I first came across them at my local Farmers Market. When I found out they also had a shop I knew I had to get my rump over to shop. They have amazing varieties that look as good as a they smell. They are also super friendly, which means I should really go back…

Oats and Honey ALSO say morning to me, but in the breakfast form!

Nibble Chocolate – Peru Single Origin Criollo: Yeah chocolate is a win, and pretty much a slam dunk for anyone who gets any subscription. Good on Hole In Wall to see that right off the bat! Chuao seems to be very popular in subscription boxes and it is awesome to see that Nibble is getting some exposure to show that San Diego is a great place to get your chocolate tasting on!

So I should nibble this and not gnaw right?

True Gentlemen’s Jerky – Sinsa Korean Flavored BBQ Beef Jerky: I so want to eat this you guys… Serious just wanna get weird and chomp away. Sadly I don’t eat beef so I had to go to someone who not only eats beef but that I trust in matters of taste.

This local bear says that the jerky is REALLY really awesome! Not just “yeah this is good” or “great.” But that it is a remarkable product. Now I want to try it even more! Get this, they include floss with it so that it really is a product for a True Gentlemen… or people who just wanna eat like one.

It is locally sourced jerky that turns its back on hormones and antibiotics has its very own subscription! I guess I know what will be a great gift for the menfolk in my life. Womenfolk too. But usually I try to unload my other stuff on them so (beauty stash I am looking at you)… yeah

Would be great if tofu jerky was a thing… that tasted good.

Carlsbad Gourmet – Oaked Arrogant Bastard Ale Chipotle Hot Sauce: A collaboration with Stone Brewing company, one of the best brewers in San Diego! That is actually saying a lot because San Diego seriously is a beer hub with some of the best breweries in America! I literally can walk to many of these tasting rooms which makes it tough not to just spend my time drinking all the time. Yummmm Beeer!

Also YUM hot sauce! This hot sauce has a oaked quality that rounds out the chipotle pepper.  I can pour this on just about anything to make it a little more exciting!

Does it mean anything that I enjoy drinking Arrogant Bastard Ale?

MJ’s Markey Bar – P.C Bar: This bar is made with all the healthy. You know when you are hungry and don’t want to eat something bad, but really want to fill the horrible feeling of emptiness in your tummy? This is what I would reach for! I actually really liked that it was not too sweet and kept me full.

The trick is to not buy candy bars and just surround yourself with things that are healthy…. I will get on that one day.

Hopkins AG – Lime and Sea Salt Almonds: YUM!!!! I love this flavor! I wish this were a giant bag, which means now I will have to go on the hunt to get more of these sour salty treats! I don’t really like plain almonds but when they have this kind of flavor I can have a few when I am hungry and feel good for a long spell. I now am stalking their website to see what other flavors I want to try!

Do you think they can make almonds with the flavor or success? I want those too.

Bella Vie Candles – San Diego Scented Soy Candle: This candle smells better than San Diego. I am just going to be honest and upfront about that. It smells like Jasmine and the beach. But the beach in your mind and not in real life. The real beach does not smell this good and never ever will.

I am unsure why a fly is the icon for this brand because it smells really good. However, I can see why they U.S Grant Hotel (where I love to grab Happy Hour for legit old school cocktails) uses her scents in their rooms.

Either way my place is smelling a lot more sunny now!

Maw ‘N Paw – Caramel Kettle Korn: I need to go slow on this because I could inhale a bag with very little thought but obvious consequence. I have never had this before but will look around for it. I am not always in the mood for this type of snack but I am ALWAYS in the mood for putting on an old time accent from what I imagine the people sounded like from the Gold Rush.

Now youngin’s doncha’ go git too much of that thar corn stuck in your craw!

Verdict: I am really shouldn’t be surprised that Hole In Wall did such a good job with this box given they are based in San Diego. However, there have been a few boxes who have let me down before in regards to bringing local flavor in a box. Hole In Wall did a great job with both products I have had before and products that I have yet to discover. I also really appreciate that they did an array of products because it could have easily been to much on the snack side.

Next box? They go to Seattle!!!

Disclosure: I received this box for a honest review, I have not received any compensation and there are no affiliate links in this post.

Beef jerky WITH floss included!?! Be still my wild heart! I have a deep and burning NEED for this!

Mmmm beef jerky. This box looks awesome! I like how this month is your town and next month is mine. I actually just got a bunch of really cool stocking stuffers in the Washington store in my mall. I shouldn’t have been surprised about how awesome local stuff is, but the storefront looks lame.

I predict some Theo’s or Seattle Chocolates, perhaps some salmon, caramel, coffee, and probably a Chihuly piece in your Seattle box =》

I think it is pretty cool they are hitting up Seattle given how awesome it is there. You win a prize if you they include those brands! I will be more than happy if they can do as good of a job as they did for SD

Oooer, a prize! So, I’m from SD… so it always confuses me when people write SD for San Diego because cities aren’t usually abbreviated.
