I always save the spoilers for last because I like a little surprise! Once again, I love the card and am going to frame this one. I almost swapped to get this last week because I thought it was some cool art piece from a box I missed! Like I mentioned in Coffee Talk on Sunday, I love The Labyrinth, and this totally reminds me of the beginning credits with Jareth the owl and his sparkly glass balls.

Bookmark by Evie Bookish: “inspired by The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater.”

I follow Evie Bookish on Instagram, and I was excited to see a couple pieces in this box by her! I’ve never heard of this series though, but The Raven Boys [book 1] has pretty good reviews.

A Knot in the Grain and Other Stories by Robin McKinley: A code to buy the book discounted from $6.99 to $3.99.

This book is from 1995 so I am curious why it was randomly included because it’s not listed on the spoiler card. It might be interesting, but I prefer to use Overdrive to download ebooks and audiobooks from the library for free.

This book came out the year my elementary school got the internets and I had to do a biography on Bill Clinton. I never finished.

Quote Art Print by Evie Bookish from Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. Full sheet 8×10″ prints from Evie Bookish sell on Society6 for $12.79, but this is half sized.

This is lovely. I’ve never heard of this book either,  but I love the colors and the brush lettering.

Patronus Lip Balm from Geek Fire Labs: $4. “Ingredients: soybean oil, sunflower oil, beeswax, hemp oil, avocado oil, jojoba oil, cocoa butter, shea butter, vitamin e, aloe vera, flavor oil.”

This is mint and white chocolate. I hate chocolate mint because it made me projectile vomit as a child… so… no thanks =) However, even though it’s McBoyfriend’s favorite type of ice cream, he doesn’t like weird chapsticks.

He knows I hate it, forgot, and accidentally bought me peppermint bark for Christmas. Fired. Well, rehired bc he bought me a squirrel feeder.

owlcratebox06

Harry Potter POP Funko Figure: $9.41 on Amazon.

do not understand the draw of POP figures. They’re in a lot of geeky sub boxes, and I’ve seen them in many of the bookstagram feeds.

I do love me some HP, and miiiight have kept it had it been a Snape figure.

owlcratebox07

Worlds of Ink and Shadow by Lena Coakley: $11.08 on Amazon.

This cover feels sooo velvety and wonderful!! I hate dust covers on books, but I just want to pet this one.

owlcratebox08

The contents of the book, however, I am not so sure of. I was a crappy English major and never got into historical lit. My biggest issue with reading this is that last year I read a book called Coldwaterthat was also a reimagining of the Brontës but in Australia, and I didn’t understand why even take these real people and make up a fake history. Why not just rename the characters since nothing about the story was historically accurate? I’m apprehensive, but I’ll try it.

owlcratebox09

I like taking the clothes off my books to see what their covers look like 😉 This nice deep purple with silver writing will be nice to look at. There was also a letter from the author included with this book.

Worlds of Ink and Shadow Paper Doll.

I don’t know what to do with this. I loved paper dolls as a kid–I had American Girl magazine paper dolls and homemade ones from clothing magazines. However, I’m 29 and uhm don’t really play with dolls anymore.

Look! Subista mentioned her ModCloth Stylish Surprise shoes were Brontë-ish and I found them on a Brontë!

I hope it is WALL-E earrings! And that I can remove the posts and put in silver ones =\

Verdict: This box wasn’t a hit for me, but I’ll still give the book a go. The owl card and brush lettering print were my favorite items, however. The total I could actually add up was less than the cost of the box, which is $37 after shipping. However, the book + art prints for me almost total around what I spent on my 3 month sub.

I wish there was a discount for Evie Bookish stuff! I just received my boygirlparty package that I ordered using my 10% OwlCrate coupon from last month, and I’ll be opening that tomorrow as a YAY! back to grad school ho hum present. Look for the One Things Leads to Another post soon!

Pops have a certain charm because they’re collectible, they come in the designs of your favorite characters (well, pop culture characters) and will almost always go up in value. For example, Scar from Lion King was “vaulted” (funko word for retired) two weeks ago and instantly climbed to 25$ a day later, originally up from 10$.

The HP ones probably won’t be vaulted for awhile, wave 2 just barely released with Draco, Luna and Sirius, but Snape is definitely harder to find and much more valuable because of Alan Rickman.

My current collection is worth 400$ retail because I have 40 pops, however if I were to sell today it would be well over 1000$ because many are out of production. So there’s a lot of allure to the little vinyl things but they’re not for everyone 😛

Thanks! That’s quite helpful. In my mind they were like Beanie Babies which never actually ended up being worth anything. I think now you can find approx one buttload of them on ebay for pennies. What fandoms do you collect?

I had to re-read the plaque several times because I couldn’t figure out what she wasn’t interested in telling about other people…at first it looked like secrets then seizures and finally…is it sadness?
Great review and great box. I love how diverse the stuff is that they send.

Bahaha, I had to reread that multiple times as well and look at other letters for reference. It says “futures”. My mom writes in ridiculously flourished cursive, so I learned how to read scripty writing, and I myself am primarily a cursive writer.

Great review! I am curious about the book. Love the picture of your kitty looking mystified.

Are you a historical fiction fan? My February BOOM!box is supposed to be Austen themed 😉

Well have I got some books for you! What do you like? I read like 14 Anne of Green Gables in 6th grade and gave up on anything older than that. I think I had Little Women checked out for most of the school year but just couldn’t finish it.

I’m not sure that this book is a great fit for me but I’ve had far more hits than misses from owl crate so I’ll give it a try. I also need to read an historical fiction book for the ReadHarder challenge from Good Reads and I think this will work for it.

I got the Hermione POP and promptly ruined its collectable value by taking it out of the box and putting it on my desk at work.

    • January 29, 2016 at 4:54 pm

CeciliaA did you read the book from last month? I just started it. I also joined the OwlCrate Goodreads group to see discussions on monthly books.

Well, you can leave it in a box to collect value [and dust] or on your desk to collect happy glances [and probably dust as well if you’re semi lazy about dusting like I am]. I have small peacocks all over my desk because the previous renters left a basket of ornaments and I used them to decorate!

I haven’t read the book from last month yet. I seem to have an aversion to historical fiction. I don’t have a reason for that aversion but is a genre that I’ve never really gotten into. (Or, to be fair, given a try.) I’m reading book one of the Dragon Brigade books right now. It started a bit slow but now I find myself staying up way too late to finish it. I need to be writing exams for next week but instead I’m reading. Oh well.

Uggghhh I had my whole comment finished and my phone reloaded the page.

Anyway, I don’t like historical fiction but I like time travel. Revolution is pretty good and as a teen I loved the Out of Time series. I looked into your dragon series but I also struggle with high fantasy. I’m imaginative but not when I can’t actually see pictures of crazy made up lands.

            January 31, 2016 at 6:55 pm

I think the I was struggling with the made up land part of the series. I’m sort of skimming over the parts that don’t work in my head and sticking with dragons and cool stuff. I prefer my fantasy books to based in a world that at least somewhat resembles ours (e.g. LoTR and A Song of Fire and Ice).

        • February 10, 2016 at 11:21 pm

CeciliaA, have you started Da Vinci’s Tiger from December? I’ve been reading it this week, and after a chapter I skimmed the second chapter and was about to shelve it, but it got better after they left the jousting match in the 3rdish chapter, and now it’s actually pretty interesting! Also, OwlCrate has a Goodreads group!

I haven’t started that one yet. I’m still working my way through the dragon book. I’ve gotten so far behind since the semester started I haven’t had a lot of reading time. Good to know that it gets interesting. I’ll have to check out the OwlCrate Goodreads group. We should be friends on Goodreads!
