Boxwalla Food Subscription Box Review-February 2016

Disclosure: This box was sent to me for my honest review. But let’s get real. It contains delicious chocolate…. you know I am going to love it!

Boxwalla is the new kid at school. A little shy and a little edgy but boy do you want to get to know them.  The February box is their second installment of boxes. I say installment because they offer 4 types of boxes. The categories include beauty, food, film and books. They may be new on the scene but they are not holding back in their efforts to make us fall in love with them.

Here is the deal-io:
Ships: Bi-Monthly with free US shipping
Categories: Books, Beauty, Food and film
Cost: $49.95 per box

This is a review of their February Food box. You can read my review of their February beauty box here if you desire to look beautiful while noshing…

As my subscription box habit has grown, I have begun to really love food subscription boxes. One of the reasons is because I live in a place where it is hard to get stuff that is not sold in mainstream stores. So when I saw that Boxwalla’s idea behind their food box was to send small batch items made in the USA, I got pretty excited.

I also got excited that February’s theme is: The Sweetest things……. (that means chocolate!)

Before we even open the box. We have to talk about the box itself. It feels like a piece of art! I copied their description of how it is made from their instagram:

“Did you know our boxes are hand crafted from tree-free paper? A small company in India makes the paper for us, from cotton scraps, using the traditional art of paper-making that involves 9 steps and takes several weeks. The handmade paper is then meticulously fashioned into the boxes that you see in the pictures. The whole process is completely child labor free and employs 63 local villagers and 20 skilled artisans whose families have been making paper for generations”

If you are still with me then let’s get noshing!

fudgefront

Lick My Spoon Totally Fudged Chocolate Fudge Sauce:
Um, yes. So this stuff is made with Valhorona chocolate and other yummy things like butter and cream. It pretty much tastes like heaven. Like you wanna smother something or someone with it and you don’t care if it gets on your face or in your hair. But you know if it gets in your hair you will most certainly be wiping it off and then licking your fingers so you don’t waste any.

Lick my spoon indeed…and the jar and then the lid….

Coop’s Microcreamery Salted Caramel Sauce:

So ironically as I was sampling these products, I repeatedly had love songs come to mind. I am not sure how but this simple combination of butter and sugar had me humming the lyrics from Foreigner’s “I wanna know what love is”. In particular, each taste was showing me what love is…. The caramel is sweet but it is so perfectly balanced that you want to hide it from your family memebers so you don’t have to share.

Hubby: where is that caramel you got in that subscription box? Me: Caramel? What caramel? I think you are confused. Forget about that caramel….

torrone2

Lick My Spoon Torrone:
So what is Torrone? It is a soft nougat flavored with vanilla and citrus and this version is tossed with hazelnuts, pistachios and almonds. This is a typical european candy. It can border on being very sweet so I sampled this in a small portion to start. But I was pleasantly surprised to find that the sweetness is balanced with the toasted nuts  making it extremely yummy. I can see a cube of this at 4pm to round out the day.

Ok, maybe I would start with one and then probably have three…

Pistachios are one of my favorite nuts!

Ethereal Handcrafted Meltaway Chocolate Bar filled with Blood Orange and Vanilla Bean

Ethereal Handcrafted Inclusion Chocolate Bar topped with strawberries, rose petals and pink peppercorns

Cue more love songs….. Orange and chocolate are one of my favorite combos so this bar was a home run from first taste. The orange flavor is so vibrant and the chocolate is rich. I am saving the inclusion bar for my mom. She loves pepper in her chocolate. The pics from the companies website make this bar look stunning as rose petals and strawberries are visible in the layers. I am so excited to give it to her!

As I repeatedly sample this orange bar the song in my mind that is on repeat is…. Al Green’s “Let’s stay together”…..

Survey Says:

As the love songs have indicated, I really enjoyed this box. I was really impressed with the quality of ingredients featured in the products as well as the commitment to sending out items made in the USA. I didn’t include retail values for these items because I find with food boxes that the value comes from product enjoyment and curation rather than a high retail value. As a Hawaii girl, I do have to mention that I found it awesome that they don’t charge extra for shipping (this box was heavy-all the fat from the caramel and fudge weighed it down!). I also really enjoyed that I could just open this box and enjoy it rather than having to plan a meal or get extra items to make something. I am not sure every box will be like that but for this box it was an added plus to pop open the fudge, grab a spoon and get well…..”oooo, babe, lost in love…..” (Lost in love by Sheriff)

Wonderful review! I saw a couple other reviews on this box and yours was the first to really make me want it. (Or wait, maybe that’s bad… because I don’t need more boxes!) Your writing “voice” / humor was very Subscriptionista-like today – so funny! Fudge sauce on your face and in your hair… and all the awesome 80’s song references!

I like how the caramel is sealed so that it looks like caramel on the lid that had dripped down onto the jar – cool. 🙂
