OwlCrate March 2016 box

Now that it’s almost May, how about we look at the March OwlCrate???

That’s what happens when I write a post, then forget to add the pictures, then forget about it all.

Theme: Writer’s Block

Kikkerland Quill Pen in White: $2.50. These came in white or black.

This is pretty cool! I have a very specific pen I use for writing though, so I think I’ll gift this to a penpallie.

Pentel Energel, needletip 0.5mm. It dries immediately and is great for lefties!

642 Tiny Things to Write About: $6.87.

When I worked with middle schoolers, this would have been a fun thing to bring along. I also would’ve loved some writing prompts as a teen. Now I don’t really write much anymore other than on Subscriptionista or for school.

You live in a studio apartment, there’s a bear in your bathroom, and you REALLY have to go. Plot out your plan of action!

Out of Print Banned Books Socks: $10

I’ve seen these before, and if you know anything about me you know I love books and socks. Win! They aren’t awesome at staying up. Though, I do love that the website actually has large socks for sizes 10-13. That’s pretty rare, and I wish I’d gotten some largies for my 11s.

Bookworm Boutique Pins

Bookworm Boutique is all over bookstagram pages. I like her stuff, but I’m not into pins. However, I had a backpack covered in pins as a teen so I think these are a great YA box inclusion!

The pins say: “I start a new adventure every time I open a book”, “Let’s live in fictional worlds”, and “I live to read. I read to live.”

My boyfriend tells me about his work day every day in detail, so I always give him a synopsis of the books I am reading or listening to. My other life, basically!

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner: $10.58 on Amazon.

Description from Goodreads:

Dill has had to wrestle with vipers his whole life—at home, as the only son of a Pentecostal minister who urges him to handle poisonous rattlesnakes, and at school, where he faces down bullies who target him for his father’s extreme faith and very public fall from grace.

He and his fellow outcast friends must try to make it through their senior year of high school without letting the small-town culture destroy their creative spirits and sense of self. Graduation will lead to new beginnings for Lydia, whose edgy fashion blog is her ticket out of their rural Tennessee town. And Travis is content where he is thanks to his obsession with an epic book series and the fangirl turning his reality into real-life fantasy.

Their diverging paths could mean the end of their friendship. But not before Dill confronts his dark legacy to attempt to find a way into the light of a future worth living.

This description wasn’t particularly appealing to me, and I actually was going to donate the book but it has 4.35 stars on Goodreads right now, which is pretty high. So, perhaps I shall give this book a chance.

April Theme: Dystopia [these have already been sent out]

May Theme: Steampunk

OwlCrate May 2016

The box will contain a book which is an inventive retelling of a beloved children’s story, as well as some beautiful items! If you love jewelry, The Infernal Devices trilogy, and clockwork you won’t want to miss this super fun box!

Verdict: March’s box theme kept me around for another month, but I didn’t really like anything in the box. Wait, I liked the socks. I canceled for April because I hate hate hate dystopian stuff, but steampunk…. I might… I might have to resub. Plus OwlCrate sent me a 10% off come-back-to-us discount, so I am tempted…

I think I say every month that teen me would have died over this box! I think the curators really do a great job, but this box just isn’t for me. Sighhh. I know if I cancel for good I’ll get super fomo, but seriously my TBR list has 250 books in it. I need to calm the lit down.

What did you think? Let us know!

I have those socks. I love the print, but damn they cut off my circulation at the top. My calves are pretty normal size, so boo. I love the little writing book. It’s been on my Amazon wish list for a while.

Young Adult isn’t exactly my genre, but I love me some steampunk! Thinking …….

Artemis, the writing book is on the MSA swap site ;D

What sort of steampunk books have you read? I read Mechanica and the Finishing School series, but both are YA.

Hahaha. I totally did not make the connection between a book sub and the steampunk genre of books. I was thinking steampunk jewelry, which I love.

I have read The Time Machine which isn’t technically steampunk, but people often put it the category. Perdido Street Station was also good. I’m probably going to pick up OwlCrate this month.
