Play! By Sephora Subscription Review by Heat – March 2016

Disclaimer: There are no affiliate/referral links in this post. The box was paid for by Heat7918

Play! By Sephora is a make up subscription that has taught me the meaning of FOMO or Fear Of Missing Out mixed with a healthy dose of box envy. The wait list and long and there seems for me, that I will never get off of it! I imagine that the time I am able to sign up that we will have futuristic make up that we apply just by spraying on our faces. Seriously, who so I have to grease to get my box?!?

Thankfully it helps to have Heat7918, for her heart is kind and she has taken pity upon me to share her box with us all! Yay!

Cost: $10 a month

Below you will find her unboxing photos and comments! Thanks again Heat, it really means a lot to the blog!!! Also you make me laugh all the giggles!!!

Play! by Sephora Review

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 – I had previously received this sample in my Sephora Sun Safety Kit last summer (today’s review is sponsored by the letter “S”… for Subscriptionista). I like that this product multi-tasks a as sunscreen, moisturizer and primer. (Although I still use my moisturizer first.) I recently read an article (on the internets, so it must be true) that all sunscreen can double as a moisturizer and that it should be the first product applied to your skin after cleansing so that the sunscreen stuff isn’t blocked by your other products. Everything else I’ve read has sunscreen as the last step so… whatevs, just sharing. This product feels nice on my skin but I don’t think I’ve seen any “blurring” of imperfections.

Fresh Soy Face Cleanser – I haven’t tried this yet but soy proteins, rosewater and cucumber extract sound good… I don’t know if you can read the blurb on right page but it talks about the 4-2-4 cleansing method that K-pop stars swear by (K-pop stars? Not sure who these stars are but if it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me): “massage in an oil cleanser for 4 minutes, add in a foam or gel cleanser like your Fresh Soy Face Cleanser for two minutes, and then finish with four minutes of rinsing. Ta-da! or in Korean: jjan!” What?!? I’m familiar with (and often do) the double cleansing method – oil cleanser then another cleanser – but I’m apparently going WAY TOO FAST. I think each step takes maybe…. 30 seconds? 1 minute tops. Am I really supposed to rinse for 4 minutes?? Seems like a waste of water but please tell me if I need to do this. (Actually, please tell me I don’t need to. Thanks.)
Play! by Sephora Review
Sephora Collection The Perfectionist: Airbrush Sponge – I’m still learning to use my Beauty Blender (thank you Pnut for the tips – I know you are jealous that I got this adorable purple blender!) It has a lot of great reviews so I look forward to trying it. It really is cuter than my beauty blender… I love purple!
Play! by Sephora Review
Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil – I recently got this sample (from Ipsy?) and I like it! I don’t mind getting a second one at all. It’s not as oily as an oil and soaks in pretty well – I like to wait a couple of minutes before I put my make-up on. (Was it Subscriptionista who recently got this sample too?) Oh, and make sure you read the tricks on this page for “the perfect selfie” – my favorite is #2: “Stand in front of a fan to create hair with volume and drama”!
Play! by Sephora Review
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner – Wow, this eyeliner has 6,874 reviews on Sephora.com and 4,799 are 5 out of 5 stars! I’m excited to try it but not sure if I want to open it yet because I have some other liquidy-type liners open and should wait until they dry out… (Sorry mailbox junkie, you can’t have this one to draw cat pictures! Speaking of cats, I attempted an Onderria-style cat eye for the Rihanna concert a couple weekends ago and realized that my eyelids just aren’t made for that, but I rocked it anyway! Well, I think I did… kinda… it looks good in pictures but it was a little rough in person.)
Play! by Sephora Review
Maison Martin Margeila “Replica” Beach Walk perfume – Play! always includes a sixth/bonus perfume sample which I’m okay with – and have actually found a perfume I looooove – even though I’m not a big perfume person and hate when Birchbox or other beauty boxes send me a perfume sample as one of my main samples. This one is nice because it’s a little spray (not a messy vial, yay!)  and it really does have a nice beachy scent when I sniff the tube. I haven’t put it on yet – one hour in (which I can’t always make it that long with some perfumes) is the real test. But this could be another keeper for me.  🙂

Empty Sample Jar – Huh? When I first found this in the box, I was like “why is this little plastic thingy empty? did they make a mistake?” Nope, no mistake. This is for me to take to the store to do a color match / IQ. I’m pretty sure anyone could just go into the store without a little plastic jar and still get a foundation sample, right? Still, it’s the thought that counts and the color IQ sounds interesting: “ColorIQ is the first and only beauty service that scans the surface of your skin and assigns it a ColorIQ number from our exclusive library of 110 skin tones and undertones to reveal scientifically precise lip, foundation, and concealer matches.”  Have any of you tried it?
Play! by Sephora Review
Five tips to Ace Your Base – nothing super special here except I LOVED the band Ace of Base back in the 90s! “All That She Wants”, “I Saw a Sign”, “Young and Proud”… Who’s with me?
Play! by Sephora Review
Last but not least is the Play! Pass. I’ll admit, I haven’t used one yet.  I probably should have gone to them to help with my cat eye… meow.

Great review! I’m now on youtube signing along to “Don’t turn around”. It’s pretty darn amazing how many of the lyrics I remember. This is what my brain has retained over the years.
Ace of Base was my very first cassette tape. Such love!

I am glad you tried the cat eye!! It’s a lot of fun to do =D Mine are usually a bit crooked, but I like to do it anyway when I go out. That’s cool that you can go in and have them help you each month.

I finally got off the wait list! I’ll get a box this month. I’m so excited as I had almost given up. I’ve never been in a Sephora store. Guess I’ll have to go and see this magical place.

Oh no. Do not go to the beauty equivalent of Disneyworld! Stay online shopping where it is more safe.

How did you feel about the signing up process? I had doubts to sign up but I had FOMO and the urgency of Sephora saying that the spot was not gauranteed, the threat if you went off the order form you will lose your place, and the fabulousness of the March box that we would not get made me shell out ten clams a month!

So I’m on a total beauty box (and beauty product) ban right now, but I still have total box envy right now. This is awesome!

Heat, I loved your review. I laughed till I cried. And now I’m singing “I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes I saw the sign life is demanding without understanding” in my office. I really should close my door.

I’m glad you enjoyed the review and found some fun in singing Ace of Base!

I’m not the perpetually funny, always quick-witted type like all the Subista bloggers (though I do have my moments), but this one mostly wrote itself… Thank you Sephora for selfie tricks and four minute rinsing tips. Seriously, do people do this??

Love this review!! Rinse for four minutes?! ya um no…

I just got notice this week that I am finally off the waiting list for this one. I am a little too excited. It seems this box has a better balance of makeup and skincare. Birch box sends me a LOT of skin creme because of my age. The makeup is what makes me fall for the curated boxes.

Congratulations Lizzie! So glad to you have in the club.

You probably know that Play! by Sephora doesn’t do any customization which I don’t mind since I’ve liked trying almost everything so far – also, you don’t have to worry about someone getting a better box than you. 🙂 They did have one box (that I really liked!) that was all skincare but otherwise, they do usually have a nice mix.
