Look What I Bought: Macy’s Sun Essentials Set Review – June 2016

The Limited Edition Box/Bag: Macy’s Sun Essentials Set

Cost: “Retailed” for $38.00, I bought it for $14.99 (currently $19.99 as of this post).

What is in it: 9 deluxe samples in a clear pouch!

Kick Back and Get Comfortable:

Everyone knows here that I am a sucker for a good value deal so when I heard that this bag of goodies was on sale for $14.99 with free shipping I jumped on board! I had seen the spoilers for 2016 Sephora Safety Sun Kit and sadly this is the first year I am not purchasing one because I am an angry villager (AKA disgruntled customer) with her pitchfork raised because I know that the value has gone really downhill. I am still pissy about it mainly because it was something to look forward to in the middle of the year despite the dwindling value. Those familiar to Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit will be familiar with most of the products here in this Macy’s Sun Essentials Set.

Macy’s to the rescue!!! How about that monthly subscription box now 😉

Mini Tweezerman Tweezers

Mini Tweezerman Tweezers – Assorted Colors

This was the main reason why I bought this bag! These tweezers paid for the bag itself and everything else was gravy. I needed better tweezers to put in my emergency first aid kit in my JuJeBe diaper bag. Cheapo “splinter” tweezers weren’t cutting it. My husband likes using my Anastasia tweezers for the girls’ splinters and I really do not want to pack the.best.ever.everyone.needs.one tweezers with me at all times.

Those familiar with me know of my JuJuBe diaper bag obsession!

Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion

Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion

This is a favorite for me and I have repurchased this in full size a few times. I think what I love most about this product is that it comes in an airless pump. Even the sample is in an airless pump! I put it on and it sinks in and my skin feels fine.

No muss no fuss.

Tarte Tarteguard 30 Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion

Tarte Tarteguard 30 Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Sunscreen Lotion

This Tarte product is new to me. I will also be receiving this in another subscription box this month which I am happy about because I like this sample. It did take me a million pumps to get that bit of sample on its top! This has a pleasant scent that dissipated once applied it on ma face and I liked it.

Tarte can be a tart by being in multiple subscription boxes and I will still always love her!

Origins Smarty Plants CC SPF 20 Skin Complexion Corrector

Origins Smarty Plants CC SPF 20 Skin Complexion Corrector

I am not sure whether I notice that the tint covers my imperfections but it feels nice and I think it does a good job as a very sheer tinted moisturizer.

Someone in the Origins Marketing Department is cheesy. I don’t think “Smarty Plants” will be making millions and if it is in the Outlet stores in a few months maybe I will pick up a full size.

Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital SPF 30 Cream

Lancome Bienfait Multi-Vital SPF 30 Cream

Lovely. I used this on my hands because I like using a rich sunscreen that feels really moisturizing and does not feel sticky on my hands.

24 hour moisturization please!

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+ WetForce

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream SPF 50+ WetForce

Another brand that has a cult following, I never can get over the sticky feeling that Shiseido sunscreens give me. I whip my Shiseidos out for hot days when sunburn awaits me the moment I set foot outside.

I feel that the (New) Jersey sun has a huge bitch slap feeling for the most part when one enters the sunlight in a hot summer’s morning. This is one of the things I do not miss about Jersey. The bitch slapping.

TanTowel Half Body Classic Towelette

TanTowel Half Body Classic Towelette

I always give away my TanTowels to a tanner so off it goes in her stash!

But my luminous Onderria gets first dibs!

Cosmetics Case

Hot pink/purply and orange!

Holy batman this is bright!

I used to shun these see-through cases then I fell in love with them for their practicality. I use these bags when traveling so I avoid the dumping-everything-out-in-the-hotel-room and then fishing for all the products later (or to avoid my daughters from having a messy spa party)!

See-through makes everything easier. That’s what she said!!!

And Now My Two Missing Samples 🙁

Clarins UV Plus Broad Spectrum SPF 50 Non-tinted Sunscreen

This comes in almost every Sephora Safety Sun Kit that I have purchased for the most part. I want to love this but I would never purchase it. It leaves me a grainy feeling on my skin until I wash it off. So I am not really disappointed to be missing it. I want to love it because French ladies adore Clarins. French people made this sample for me so I try to enjoy it and think that I am a French lady when I apply it.

A French lady who feels a buildup on her skin :/

DKNY Be Delicious Deluxe Mini

I am without! I am bummed.

I really feel that all subscription box perfume samples should come in miniature form.

So I Called Customer Service About My Missing Samples…

And the most motivated, happiest, excited customer service representative spoke with me. He gave me two options. Either to exchange at no cost to me or a 20% discount off the set.

I read comments of stuff missing and I also did not want to deal with the hassle of exchanges. I actually had a bad experience with another vendor in which I kept exhanging the item I wanted so badly but all the replacements had the same defect. I did not want any additional stress to my life so I elected to receive a 20% discount off the Macy’s Sun Essential Set.

My customer representative was really too happy. I never spoke with an overly enthusiastic customer service representative. Maybe that is also why I went with the 20% because it seemed to good to be true that I would receive a proper Macy’s Sun Essential Set with 100% of the contents in it. And possibly receive a not so enthusiastic customer service representative when I call to find a resolution.

I am going to make an allegation that my customer service representative was high or somethin. He was waaaaaaay toooo happy.

Verdict: I am still bummed about missing the miniature perfume sample but $14.99 with a 20% discount applied for missing two samples sounded like a better idea then a possible future headache if I exchanged for another set with missing samples. This was a nice treat and my substitute to the 2016 Sephora Sun Safety Kit. This is my second Macy’s bag (my first bag had no issues) and I really hope Macy’s does more of these bags!
Did you (or will you) buy the Macy’s Sun Essential Kit and/or Sephora’s Sun Safety Kit? Have you ever had missing item(s) in a subscription box? Please comment below your thoughts no matter how random they might be.

I have had items leaked before and I was given a replacement. But I don’t think i had anything missing before.

Have you ever had anything spew all over the place? I have only gotten cute itty bitty leaks. You bet if I get a leaky box I will post it!

Nooo Pnut nooo tanning towels! Haha. Idea! You should just tan one half of all of your babies’ bodies. Then look at other people like THEY’RE crazy when they ask what happened to your children.

I was thinking inside of glitter tats on the girls I used one of the glitter tat stencils with a tanning towel. Ahhhh they are too wee but the thoughts are funny.

I’m currently using the Peter Thomas Roth sunscreen from last year’s Sephora Sun Safety kit – I likey! Hope to feature in my next empties to MBJ. I think I’m going to pass on the sunscreen kits this year… finish what I have from last year and then get a full size or two to get me through the rest of the year.

What are your favorite face sunscreens? I keep repurchasing the Peter Thomas Roth mostly for the airless pump. I am running low on my Coola face sunscreen which is a upside down pump in full size. I like Coola in sample sizes because of this reason.

I think this year may be the year of decimating our mini sunscreen army Heat!

Down with the sunscreen armies! We WILL defeat them!!

I really like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer liquid Sunscreen SPF 70 but I recently read a negative article about Neutrogena so… More research is needed.

        • June 7, 2016 at 6:47 pm

I can’t use retinol because I am “breeding” but my favorite sunscreen would be Neutrogena healthy skin anti-wrinkle cream SPF 15. I also liked the night version whcih I believe is the same but without the SPF.

I would simply be so stoked if Coola face SPF came in an airless pump!
