Play! By Sephora Subscription Review by Heat – July 2016

Disclaimer: There are no affiliate/referral links in this post. The box was paid for by Heat7918

Play! By Sephora is a make up subscription that has taught me the meaning of FOMO or Fear Of Missing Out mixed with a healthy dose of box envy. The wait list and long and there seems for me, that I will never get off of it! I imagine that the time I am able to sign up that we will have futuristic make up that we apply just by spraying on our faces. Seriously, who so I have to grease to get my box?!?

Thankfully it helps to have Heat7918, for her heart is kind and she has taken pity upon me to share her box with us all! Yay!

Cost: $10 a month

Below you will find her unboxing photos and comments! Thanks again Heat, it really means a lot to the blog!!!

I got my Sephora Play! today! The bag for this month’s products is cute with a popsicle and lipstick kiss mark. The July theme is “Effortless.”
 af6c26cf-553a-4078-9a2a-488df058d8a0
NEST Citrine perfume – Pretty package and this one is a little spray – yay! And is it actually possible that is the 3rd scent I actually like from a perfume in a Play! box?  Unheard of… for me – I’m not a perfume gal. The description says: “Layers of fresh lotus and freesia mingle with bright citrus and a base of precious woods.”
 1dbcbd4a-6e06-4689-9c1f-a354947d8ea6
Ouai Wave Spray – Whatever recent sub box sent this out, I didn’t get it.  I will try this out since I’ve been attempting to style my wavy/frizzy/curly hair au natural. And I’ll try to remember to let you know if I like it!
 14ad7502-5b06-46ea-a3ef-c9096abf4b9e
Blotterazzi by BeautyBlender – I have never heard of this and had no idea what it was supposed to be… a flat beauty blender? Apparently is supposed be like blotting papers only it’s a sponge. Review are mixed on Sephora.com and I’m oily anyway so not sure if I’ll try this or pass along to a friend.
 2deb9ea6-cbef-432d-8d8a-ed2c1a6a299c
First Aid Beauty Face Cleanser – This has a lot of good reviews and I look forward to trying it once I get through a few other samples in my stash!
 65006518-451d-4414-b097-a6d6af2f160f
Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer – I’m pretty sure I have a sample of this already. I know Smashbox makes multiple primers but the one I have is clear too so I think it’s the same. If so, it’s okay/good but right now I’m enjoying my “dewy” look primers like the one Sephora sent last month – I think it’s by Becca?
435307f7-8b4f-4c88-aa45-20ff2eb91368
Benefit Cosmetics Dew the Hoola Soft Matte Liquid Bronzer – Sephora sent a liquid bronzer last month too (which I’m really liking!) so that’s both a primer and liquid bronzer 2 months in a row – I don’t mind too much really – they’re great brands and I get to try different ones to compare and see which ones work best for me. It sounds like this Benefit Hoola one might be orangey on some of us cool-toned fair folks and better for medium-warm tones but I’ll try it mixed in my foundation since that’s mostly what I’ve been doing with the other one.

Another good month of Sephora Play! in my humble opinion. Not their best but still worth $10 to me.  Oh, I forgot to mention that there are a couple of box variations this month for dry vs. oily skin. I believe this is their first attempt at some customization which I always think is good!! I got a survey from them too which I haven’t done yet because it said it takes 20 minutes – I’ll do that when I have more free time. I like that they seem to be listening to customer feedback.  🙂

Great review! I should be getting my first Sephora Play! today and am excited (I believe I’m getting the alternate box)! I already get BoS and wasn’t going to get more, but then I got off the waitlist for this one soooo….. Subscriptionista & Mailbox Junkie were right about the slippery slope of subscription boxes!

Thanks Elizabeth! Maybe you could do a review of the alternate box this month. 🙂

And regarding the beauty blender blotter, I meant to say I’m NOT oily… Oops. The sample doesn’t come with the little mirror case – FYI.

Thank you, Heat7918! I can definitely put something together. May I ask how you are storing your blotter since it doesn’t come with a case? The popsicle bag seems to big and a plastic baggie won’t let it breathe.

Argh! I meant to say ‘The popsicle bag seems too big…’ Apologies!

🙂 Right now the blotter is still in the cardboard package it came in… sitting in a product pile. I don’t know what it should be stored in!

I got the oily skin version. The cleanser is Skin Rescue Deep Cleanser with Red Clay. The primer is Smashbox Photo Finish Pore Minimizing and the bronzer is Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer with cocoa powder. Yes is smells like chocolate. I really like this month’s box and love the Citrine perfume. It smelled even better a few hours later after spraying it.

I like the perfume as well now that I got to finally try it!!! I usually HATE getting a scent sample but this was actually pretty sweet!!!

I have dry skin and got the same box as you. I did my survey so I assume this is the dry box.

I was not happy with my box initially because of the dupes from last month. Also the single Beauty Blender thing. If you buy it, you get a little case for your purse with two of them. What to do with a single sponge? Carry it around in your purse? Ewwww! I have excessively dry skin so it isn’t needed in my life. Anyway I was feeling something akin to a mournful rage at stupid duplicated products more sea salt spray and perfume.

But then I looked at it this way. It only cost $10 a month, I get 10 points on my VIB status, and an additional 50 if I go to the store and use the card from the box. PLUS, my stash of stuff to gift my nieces continues to grow and they think I am the best aunt ever when they get a beauty care package from me! So…while I don’t love this month’s Play, overall I get joy from my subscription.

So…I am now happy with my box this month and will NOT be cancelling my subscription.

I only have neffs and an legit jelly of you!

    • July 20, 2016 at 6:19 pm

I did not even think about the gross oily factor of all this… But now it is as if my eyes are opened

I still haven’t received my play! Yet but with dry skin I’m sure this is the bag I’ll get. I’m excited about trying a real beauty sponge since I buy the knock off version and I’m always excited about Benefit! I have trying to use products like this and love the bare minerals from the last bag!

The beauty sponge is an oil blotter to replace blotting papers. Unfortunately it is not THE Beauty Blender that we all wish it was. We did get the Sephora version of Beauty Blender in February or March.

Is this your first Play? Yes I AM asking if you are a Play Virgin 😉

      • July 20, 2016 at 6:17 pm

I am almost a Play Virgin as I got last months… But I had no idea this was for blotting the face. I never got the beauty blender sadly…

Holy cow this box was awesome in terms of diversity, value and trendy items. I mean, how is it that this box is ten million times better than birchbox?
The bloterazzi just looks like a good place for bacteria to grow…
I want to see some pics of this au-natural hair you speak of… Are you going for festival style?!

    • July 20, 2016 at 6:15 pm

I agree I was way more excited about this box then Birchbox! They keep it really forward and the value was there for sure!

      Way better than Birchbox!

I have wavy/curly/frizzy hair that I’ve blow dried straight (2-3 times per week since I don’t need to wash more than that) for over 15 years. I’m finally giving in and just trying all different products and letting it air dry mostly. I just hate frizz and wish I either had pretty curls or loose beachy waves instead of what I’ve got. If I get brave one day, maybe I’ll share pictures. 🙂
