If you are wondering what sort of hobbies that hippies have. . . well, then you came to the blog just in time. 1st off, hippies love having hobbies and hippies especially love hobbies that involve cool diy projects (say that 3 times fast).

And thus The Hippie Hobby was born! In all seriousness, this box is an uber cool craft box that sends you the materials to make a craft (and a small mini craft) with a focus on up-cycling or recycled materials. How cool is that?!

Isn’t the box rad?!

They totally know the way to a sub box addict’s heart…..

Packaging!

Here are the box contents for the craft! Everything is clearly labeled and easy to find and perfectly proportioned.

This month’s craft is: DIY floating citronella candles! Let us pause and appreciate how these instructions are clear, written down and included in the box with demo pics of the candles being made (Darby Smart, I’m looking at you). One of my favorite aspects about this box is how simple yet refined the crafts are and this month is no exception.

Now it’s time for name that band: “Close your eyes, give me your hand, darling. . .  Do you feel my heart beating? Do you understand?”

Step One: Melt wax! And yes, be careful when you do it. Imagine your mom standing behind you telling you that “yes, the wax will be hot” and “no, you should not attempt to lift it without a pot-holder” and “see, that is what happens when you don’t listen”…..um yes, can you tell I spend all day with a toddler..

Just an fyi, you need your own container to melt the wax.

Step two: mix in citronella to candle wax and prepare mold by spraying with cooking spray. You can also add in your own essential oils!

fyi, you need to supply the cooking spray.

Step three: Pour wax/oil combo into mold. The wax amount included perfectly fits the 10 spot mold!

Step four: Let wax cool and then insert toothpicks! It was extremely hot here on the day that I did this project so I followed their advice and threw it in the freezer for a few minutes to speed things up.

Thank goodness you can’t see all the frozen pizza…………….

Step five: Here they wait! (looking cool, huh???!!)

Step six: here is where things got a little dicey. So you have to push the toothpick through the candle to create an opening for the wick…..

As you can see. . . I clearly don’t know my own strength.

Step seven: Here is one that turned out successfully!

All in all, 8 survived the wick placement and two did not. They will be remembered fondly….

HA HA, not, super easy to remelt them and start over!

Now that’s what I call recycling!

Voila!

Important to note: The candles still melt despite being in the water and so the wax residue will remain in the water.

Bonus Craft!

The bonus craft this months was DIY dinner packets!

Included were wax bags, napkins, straws, name tags and salt and pepper packets!

How cute is this one I made for Subscriptionista that has a straw for her wine?!?!?

Survey Says:

In my opinion, Hippie Hobby has mastered the craft box. The project is simple, fun, easy to do and yet is actually something you want to use. I can totally see using these candles at a dinner party and potentially making more because the instructions/ingredients were so easy. And as easy as they make it look, I think curating a craft box this well takes some true hippie crafty passion and a person who understands that a craft subscription box is about a simple project that you can immediately jump into with a beginners level of knowledge. Well done guys!

P.S this box arrived just in time for Maui to report their first case of Travelers Zika Virus. Good thing these candles have citronella!!!

HAha that song…Bangles “eternal Flame”. BTW if you let the candles get mostly hardened and put the toothpick in when they are still a little soft in the middle it works better. super cute craft!

Ding Ding, winner winner chicken dinner!! Sadly, they say that in the instructions and I tried to do that but I think I left them in the freezer to long before inserting the wick! Do you make candles? I am so intrigued to try to make more.

Is just sticking the wick in before they harden not possible? You could tie or tape the wick to the toothpick at a right angle and rest the toothpick on top of the mold.

I wondered that too but didn’t try it. I think logistically you would be putting the candle base on the flowery part of the top of the candle. (believe me I tried to figure out how to swing it)

So cute!!!! When I saw the mold I thought it was a Jell-O shot kit, I thought wow crafty shots how fun. Candles are so much more productive and last way longer. Nice project.

Oohhh Niblet now I want to try and make jiggler Jello shots in fun shapes!
