HG Series: Kitchen

Kelly suggested the kitchen as part of the HG series back on September 1st. I’ve procrastinated on posted about the kitchen. 1. I hate our kitchen which is frustrating to me because I love to cook and bake. 2. I have not receive many kitchen items in subscription boxes. I do think having a more in-depth HG series on the kitchen will be fun. I’m leaning towards starting it in October because we will be heading towards the big holiday season in the USA.

Kelly’s HG Kitchen Items

Kelly has a few wonderful HG Kithcen items to share.

Kelly receives Driftaway Coffee that sources single-origin coffee from around the world. Her profiles are bold and classic. It looks like a fun way to expand your coffee palette.

Who remembers Skandicrush? Skandicrush was an amazing Scandinavian Design Subscription Box that took a break after the March 2015 box was delivered to subscribers. It started out as a side project for the owner and grew into something much bigger. I searched the internet to find out if the subscription will resume and could not find any new information. Kelly has a beautiful patterned Manostiles tin  that she uses to store her delightful Driftaway Coffee beans at the peak of their freshness. The Mansotiles tin is from the Skandicrush Holiday Box that was an epic 8 gift-wrapped items box.

The Driftaway newsletter recommended the Bodum French Press that Kelly now uses for making coffee. I imagine tantalizing aromas. Coffee has become an art. I have a feeling my taste buds are missing out on a pleasant journey in the mornings.

The item in the back is a breadbox from Ross. I enjoyed looking at Kelly’s picture and admiring the cohesive of the items selected.

Heat7918 responded to my request for HG Kitchen items. I love her response.

“Fridge & microwave are #1 & 2… Blender is #3 for my breakfast smoothies!

But my favorite new handy-dandy item is my
Avocado tool!! It makes it super easy to cut it in half, take out the pit and make slices! I’ve been really into avocados and guacamole this year. :)”

Sub Bella – We are fortunate to have modern appliances that make our lives safer and easier. I did not even think of the fridge or microwave. I’m one of those weirdos that don’t use a microwave.

A Heirloom Cutting Board: I decided to select the kitchen item that I used most from subscription boxes. It is the A Heirloom Cutting Board from the Design Sponge Quarterly. Quarterly has also been nicknamed Randomly by one of our beloved commenters.  The cutting board was the main spoiler for Design Sponge’s first Quarterly box.  I remember my husband grumbling about the cutting board. It is now his favorite.

Little Lamb looks adorable with his front paws crossed. He is still sleeping in the second level of the cat condo.

Glad your Design Sponge cutting board is still intact! Ours split apart and we threw it out.

I didn’t grow up with a sink trash disposal so when our sink was upgraded it came with one and no one uses it. My husband uses it and I rarely use it … seriously, the trash bin is less than an arms reach why is it so hard not to use it?

We have a Bodum coffee press too but we hardly use it maybe we are getting old but we are getting heartburn. We also have a drop coffee maker as well so it is heartburn either way. Starbucks or DD does not give us heartburn go figure. On our heartburn-free days, we loved anything from Greenwell Farms since we visited the site in Hawaii (they have these avocados free since they have many trees and one of the was called a “butter avocado” best.ever wish we had more variety in the mainland). Also we would buy Ethiopian Yigarcheffe at local boutique coffee roasters.

We recommend The Spice House or Penzey Spices. Some kind of family feud going on there but it is the same for the most part. They make it sound like a friendly mutual thing but the rumor mill says otherwise. Must be awkward during their family gatherings though.

    Very impressive post good job!

I was suffering from heartburn following drinking coffee also. I discovered a “Low Acid” french roast at Trader Joe’s. It tastes like normal coffee but the low acidity makes all the difference to my stomach. I think it’s only whole bean so hopefully you own a grinder.

Smart bear thank you! Right now our burr grinder is not hooked up and collecting dust with the occassional knob turning by a wee one.

I remember reading that a few people had that problem. We do not have a garbage disposal or dishwasher in either house. Technically we have a broken dishwasher at the farm.

My kitchen HG item is my coffee machine. Nothing else in my kitchen comes close. I love love love coffee and cannot be without it. I keep thinking I should subscribe to a coffee sub, but honestly, plain ol’ Dunkin Donuts is wonderful. We do get as many bags of Peaberry Kona coffee as we can carry when we go to Hawaii because that stuff is like the key to happiness. We also have a Nespresso machine, but I don’t seem to use it very often. I’ll take my drip coffee machine any day. I’ll have to look into the Boden French Press for my fancier coffee!

Man, Skandicrush had some really cool stuff. I wish they would come back!

    Still giggling at “Randomly”. Hahahaha

What brand do you buy your peaberry Kona? Sometimes Greenwell has free ship codes throughout the year. When we went, I got USPS priority mail boxes and mailed stuff home. Nom.
Nespresso is so cute. My friend has a machine with the little cups. I had two cups. No heartburn. I think my favorite was caramel.

Pnut, in Maui we go to Bad Ass Coffee and I think Maui Coffee Roasters. I can’t remember where we go in Waikiki as it has been a few years since we’ve gone. I don’t order it online, only buy in person, but maybe I should! I bookmarked Greenwell Farms – thanks!

I have two HGs, and they are such relatively small things, but they really do make my cooking life so much better. 1) Williams Sonoma spoonulas. I know you can find cheaper ones, but the WS ones have the perfect flat edge, and mine is 15 years old and still going strong. 2) The clean-edge can opener my sister ordered from QVC for me after I sliced open my finger on a can lid and called her asking how deep she thought was deep enough to need stitches. I did not get stitches, because at the time I was uninsured and cheap (I’m still cheap), but I did get a nifty new can opener for Christmas that year. The whole experience just added more evidence to my theory that unless stuff is falling out, butterfly bandages will work just fine.

I should probably include my stand mixer, too. That thing is the lazy girl’s kitchen dream tool.
