Kick Back and Get Comfortable:

Subista was so kind to give me a gift certificate to Home Chef. I must show my cooking skills to everyone. Well you all are in for a surprise! Because I have a hungry hubbie with three growing picky Pnut people (myself included), I need to fashion out our meals to accommodate everyone. So you will likely see IN REAL LIFE, one meal serving as planned by Home Chef for my husband and the other serving done Pnut style. I have not seen a review like this so I think it would be a nice perspective on how to stretch meals to feed a family of 2 adults and 3 little Pnut people. Of course, this would not work if my Pnut people were teenagers lol.

If you would like more background of my Modus Operandi, see my previous posts of Home Chef here and here.

Let’s get this meal started!!!

Here is the ideal picture of what my meal should look like.

The shrimp are over on the right in the group of lucious proteins. Keep in mind that the dish is a sandwich, otherwise I would have expected more shrimp!

Here is the meal packet and recipe to get me started!

Ahh, my filler, my carbs, my love (FYI this was bought at Costco otherwise it would have been a Trader Joe’s pasta). Who needs chocolate? Wait. I need chocolate and carbs and…

Here is a close up of the lower right of the recipe card. The recipe is to be cooked by 3 days otherwise it turns into a pumpkin? Also, it is important to see the lower right corner where there is a drink pairing. I left the peanut icon not cropped out just because.

There should be an add-on with applicable booze and fixins!

And here is my drink of choice, not the wine but a lukewarm mother’s milk tea. It would have been hot but life intervenes…

Notice my nifty heart cutting board from PopSugar February 2015?

Here is the back of the recipe card with the directions so I get working…

This nifty contraption I believed was from a box I bought it on sale from a Best of Quarterly!

It works!

And it was not random it worked everytime!

I make the marinade and start the bread going…

This pan came from my wedding registry. I recommend the brand (ALL-CLAD), however, I do not recommend this particular item. It hardly “grills”. I miss my George Foreman grill of my singlehood I think it broke and my husband convinced me to throw it out. I would have bought a new one on my beloved Amazon, but I got overwhelmed within the Amazon (kinda like my quest for a diffuser but I digress). So this “grill” pan will have to do. There is an outdoor grill in my condo, however, I am not a griller and I would freeze my balls (if I had real ones) if I went outside.

Being located in the east coast of the Subsista sistas, I am the coldest in the mid-west :/ But I do not hear of my Subsista Sistas grilling al fresco either so that’s that.

Bread is plated and ready for noms…

Tossing the shrimp on the grill pan. The remoloude is that bowl in the background all mixed up easily since I had to open, dump, and mix easily.

Now we go to make the foliage happen into a salad and a bed for the shrimp. Yea! Someone likes lettuce! It only worked that once. Maybe the next 10th time I offered it I will get her to eat another leaf!

Home Chef – Mardi Gras Shrimp Po’ Boy Recipe

And Voila! Home Chef’s Mardi Gras Shrimp Po’ Boy Recipe.

His Style: As Home Chef intended. My husband likes open sandwiches which gave me more than a great opportunity to eat one piece of his bread. He did not mind and said this was the best Home Chef meal of this week!

Her Style: I gave one half and then some of the bread to my Pnut people. My Pnut people tried the tomato and shrimp and deemed it inedible at this time but helped themselves to the pasta I made. I also made them some chicken tenders and took one for myself.

Since I am not a fan of foliage, we had two extra servings of the salad for two meals that I made for my husband later that week.

VERDICT: The shrimp tasted heavenly and fresh! It was sourced from Fortune Fish and I recall seeing the van making deliveries in Chicago restaurants so now I know if I see Fortune Fish truck outside a restaurant I have got to go there! The bread was carb heaven. I shared one side with my Pnut people and took one half of my husband’s sandwich. He tries to be carb free and likes open sandwiches. My husband really enjoyed this meal! Likely because of all the spices. I enjoyed my meal made to my preferences! I added a chicken tender because I made some for the girls and had one for myself. That salad was used as a side for two more meals!

This is by far one of the most entertaining food box reviews ever! I loved all the little tips and tweaks! Can’t wait to see how the rest turns out

Great post! What is the minimum that someone can order total? Is it easy to cancel? Can one skip?

    • February 28, 2016 at 3:17 pm

Easy to skip I am picky and my next week will be the end of March.
I would think if it is easy to skip it would be easy to cancel but I am not cancelling so I did not look into it. Customer service rocks via email and phone. I think they have a chat service but I am on my cell. Home Chef also has an app.
I think you can order 1 meal 2 servings but you would need to pay $10 shipping. In order to avoid shipping you need to have an $50 plus order.

Great post Pnut! We just finished our 4th week of Home Chef – still happy! Although I’ve found that I need to do my heat lower than the instructions say when cooking on my stovetop. Since I never cook and am cooking-stupid, it’s a learning curve. Who knew stoves were different? I figured they’d all be the same…

I am not sure about my broiler feature. It only works for a minute (I have not timed it but it is hardly sufficient I need to keep pressing the button repeatedly) and shuts off. All the other ovens in my life always allowed for equal opportunity scorching.

I had to modify directions for kids. For example, if I needed to boil something to drain and mash it, I just added the vegatable to water on high, let it boil and then shut it off and come back later because some Pnut person would be needing me. I also use scissors to cut up the vegatables instead of mashing some hack I learned whilst watching YouTube videos. Or pizza cutter. I just bought a food scraper/cutter from the Amazon I am excited to use it!

I am LOVING the convenience of Home Chef. Especially the last meal in my second week where I had all three needy Pnut people clamoring over me. No need to measure just open and dump and stir and toss in oven. Voila. Having everything already measured is priceless!

I have one of those garlic roller things and I honestly have no idea how to use it – do you roll it over the garlic? Put the garlic inside the tube? So confused….

    • February 29, 2016 at 7:36 pm

Put the garlic cloves into the tube and smooch them inside back and forth and their peels will fall off (for the most part)! I love mine and hope you do to yours in your next savory dish!
