Golden Tote Review – March 2015

Disclosure: At the end of this review I will post a referral link that you can use to sign up for Golden Tote. As of right now it will do nothing for you but will credit me $10. It is what it is.

Golden Tote is a women’s clothing subscription that has two options:

-$49 Tote: You pick one item and they pick 1 or 2 surprise items

-$149 Tote: You pick two items and they pick up 3 or 4 surprise items.

It does not auto renew so when you buy one bag you will not be changed for another the next month. You have the chance to fill out a profile in order to get surprise items that fit your personal style.

I dig Golden Tote because I dig surprises. I also have a real problem with spending money on this type of stuff. At any rate I like that when you buy a tote you buy the items you choose and the rest is just gravy.

The bag shipped over two weeks after I put in my order. That was annoying and sort of off putting. I hope they work out the new changes they have put into place and send out items a bit faster.

Giraffe Dress - Medium
Giraffe Dress – Medium

Giraffe Dress: When I saw this dress in the spoilers I SO wanted it. I am a sucker for animal prints. I decided to go with a medium because I wanted to make sure it was long enough for me. When it came I was so excited! I pulled out the dress and the first thing I noticed was that the top was VERY thin. It is hard to capture with the camera but I tried to here:

If you take a closer look at the picture you will see the tag behind it. You will have to wear an undershirt with this to make it work unless you like showing your bra. I like showing my bra, but not for free. One has to put a ring on it, buy cat food, and other sundries to get that privilege.

The bottom portion was also not what I expected. It is a slippery type of material that looks nice but will snag on anything:

Have you ever tried to find a way to wear something that you knew deep down in your heart would never work? This was it for me. I am a size small usually but I am very tall. So I figured a medium would cover my bases. It did not. I ended up looking like I was trying to dress up in toddler clothing. Wearing it made me feel like Alice in Wonderland when she eats the tea cakes and becomes too big for the house! Sadly this will go up for swap.

Suitable for wearing to my nephews open house where I refer to my child within just enough times to make people feel uncomfortable but not enough times where I get asked to leave.

Pineapple Top: FINALLY a sweatshirt I can feel good about drinking pina coladas in! Thank you Golden Tote!

I love the neckline as it really fancies up a sweatshirt. I can see myself pairing these with workout pants but like, totally not working out in them. I will make it look as if I might have just worked out or am going to go to the gym. I certainly don’t think any one will have the wherewithal to ask me!

Suitable to wear to brunch so that even if we are seated outside on the patio I will not be denied my unlimited mimosas sweats.

Hem & Thread Striped Maxi Dress: Those of you with tuxedo cats will share my appreciating of black and white clothing.

When I pulled this out I was excited! Dreams of super awkward ‘family’ photos of me and my tuxedo cat Sophia danced in my head. Would we be reclining on a black couch or lounging on a white shag rug? Before I could get too sold on the dress I tried it on. I am too tall for the dress! What a bummer. I am 5’10 and so this is not a huge surprise. There are usually very few options for my height and size. I am sure this will trade easily as it is very soft and the style doesn’t offend.

Suitable to wear to jail themed fashion show.

Key to My Heart – Lace Detail Shift Dress (Coral): Golden Tote hit a high note with the surprise choice! I love that it can be worn to work, and for a shift dress it is not too baggy. The coral color is great for many skin tones as well.

I really like this dress and wonder if I have the goose eggs to wear this to work. Perhaps on a hot day I can pull it off. I could wear nude high heels. Perhaps some sort of statement jewelry? A jewelry piece that says “Yup I got this dress as a surprise and YES I look great in coral thank you.”

Suitable to wear to picnic or day trip to that boring art museum that really is an excuse to go drink unlimited bloody mary’s at the bar nearby.

Sis-Sis Beaded Neckline Top (Navy):

I really like this top a lot. It is dressy casual so it allows me to indulge on my slothful ways but also make it a little nicer than usual. The construction is good and I really like that a dress down option has the chance to be a little something more than a plain old shirt.

Suitable for wearing to casual events where you want to outshine someone. You can drop hints about how some people just ‘sparkle’…

I am a bit torn on liking this top or not. On the one hand it looks like I could join Robin Hoods Merry Band of Men in it. It really has the whole look going! At the same time the other little details and come hither black and white color make me think I can somehow make this work At the very least I could make it work in my own mind even if  I lose the battle in others minds. This happens a lot in my life. See? It is full and worth living!

Not my favorite piece but interesting.

Suitable to wearing that Renaissance fair you have always been wondering about.

Overall Verdict:  I am super sad my giraffe dress did not work out. I will able to gift or swap it with someone with less gangling proportions. I wanted to wear it so badly! My other item I chose was great in person and will be used for sure. My surprise items were nice. Though they did not ring true to my personal style. In my notes I said I need things for a more professional job. The pieces I got were casual. Maybe they think I need to lighten up? I will think hard on that.

At any rate, should you want to sign up you can use this link and get nothing but the happiness of adding $10 to my account. It doesn’t cost you anything, but I just want to be fair when I post these types of links.

I got the Sis Sis beaded top too, one of my favorites! Love that coral dress you got (though probably would not work for me.) That striped maxi sure will hide the cat hair…. Almost did the pineapple top.

Besides the top you got, I also got this wonderful blue and white dress by Hem and Thread which is my new favorite piece of clothing. Then I got this pink floral palm tree top, wonderful scalloped edging at the bottom but not the best for my coloring. My last my mystery was a chili and Lime striped sweaterish thing with lace in the middle of the arms, hung weird and is already swapped out 🙂

Thanks for sharing your items, I’m obsessed with what other people get! I wonder how they really pick the surprise items… I need to learn to dress to my coloring. It’s tough because I’m rocking a really trashy hair color right now.

Ohhhh I’ll post my modcloth stylish surprise items soon. One dress is sooooooo bad

That top is not low cut enough for a Renaissance fair 🙂 Less is more at that type of place. Sorry that the giraffe dress did not work out. My tuxedo cat’s name is Sylvester of course. The boys named him.

I guess for a man with slight build then? hahaha I am so glad you are a part of the tux cat club! It is a special club indeed. Ugh I finally got all my modcloth surprise stuff. What a waste of a load of money. Really very little worked out and I will not be doing Modcloth again
