Title: Soundless
Author: Richelle Mead
Sub Box: OwlCrate, November 2015
I want to start with a bit of sad news.
Louise Rennison: 1951-2016
One of my favorite authors passed away this week. I was quite surprised, and wanted to write a little bit about her.
My favorite famous people need to stop dying =(
In high school I found the book Angus, Thongs, and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison. As a super shy dork with a secret sense of humor, it was my FAVORITE book series [10 books]. They continued coming out while I was in college, and I believe I own most of them, though all at my parents’ house. The writing is laugh-out-loud hilarious, and Georgia Nicolson is described as a teen Bridget Jones.
Some of my humor even comes from Gingey [the nickname Georgia’s sister gives her]. Though, I had forgotten about false eyelashes being referred to as “boy entrancers”, breasts renamed “nunga nungas”, and being “on the rack of luuuurve”. I do not recommend the movie, but I do recommend reading the hilarious series. You could probably read one book in an evening, but there are version for adults with several books combined.
Perfectly normal behavior =)

My Review: 3 stars
It really felt like this book was missing a lot. I was confused how these people were trapped on a mountain with fertile valleys nearby.
Also, how was the zipline built and maintained? Were there poles supporting it? There wasn’t enough explanation about the setting and the scenery, which seemed weird to me since my stereotype of these blind people in Asia hundreds of years ago is that they would be very observant.
While traveling, the main characters play a game called xiangqi, which looks similar to chess.
Also the small aspect that bothered me the most was the meals.
There is never much, if any, explanation as to what they are eating other than a “meal”. For a book dealing with food scarcity, I would think their food would be more detailed. I didn’t feel as though the author put enough research into writing a story in this setting. It didn’t feel deep enough.
I can see a teacher writing in the margins, “Setting?? Really reach deep into your story and let the scenery unfold in your palm like a scenic scene from sceneville.” Could you tell I was an English Education major for a couple of years??? =D
This part just made me laugh. I definitely didn’t play shirt removing games with boys when I was a kid!
Verdict: The story was interesting and a quick read. I just wanted more explanations. It seemed potentially sequel-esque, so I’d be curious to see if this story continues and improves.
Drink: Wine
I decided to play it cool tonight, since it’s Monday. Also, McBoyfriend came to my office door while I was studying and asked if I’d like a tiny glass of wine just because.
Yes. It’s always yes.
Recipe for Wine
Ingredients
- wine
- Red Vines [optional]
Directions
Pour into a glass. Drink. Pour. Drink, etc.
Or, for the creatively lazy, try it straight from the bottle with a Red Vine used as a straw!
Verdict: Uhhh yumm! 5 stars. McBoyfriend and I don’t know where this came from. My guess is that I went into Grocery Outlet with $14 and left with 80 bottles of wine and this was yum. I mean, one.

Congrats! You made it =) Is your wine all gone yet?
I just finished DaVinci’s Tiger from December, so bone up on your art history for next time! Tonight I’m starting Dumplin’, which was an OwlCrate book from the summer I believe [I got it in a swap because it sounded interesting]. Great review! Perfectly normal behavior for me and my bestie is imitating river dancers…. I am going to read those books!
Haha, my sister and I used to practice our riverdancing skills as well, and also try to figure out how a one legged person would riverdance.
i like that new level of complexity!!
I am sure your nunga nungas are still on your chest 😉
“My guess is that I went into Grocery Outlet with $14 and left with 80 bottles of wine…”
I love this quote. And I can relate.
Hehe jasperitis I had to go to Target to get supplies for work and also found some bottles of wine on sale, $2 for chardonnay and $3 for red!! I bought three bottles. At 9am.
