Darby Smart Review – April 2015

Darby Smart is a DIY (do it yourself) subscription that seeks to bring you a little craft project each month to thrill you and take the hassle out of crafting. How? By providing you all the materials and directions for each project!

It it is a type of box for me considering my deep longing to be crafty and my deep hatred for shopping in craft stores. I seriously think they are a legit level of hell according to Dante.

Not gonna lie, I used a big ole coupon on a yearly sub and promptly forgot. I then turned around and bought a 6 month at a discount. My extra box will be gifted. Who knows I may even run a contest. Unlike other contests you’re in a really good place to win lol

The box is not different from last months. I am 100% alright with that. Though it makes me think Birchbox is insane for changing boxes every month!

Make your own scent! Surprise!

Actually no. They gave out a hint picture and it was of a perfume bottle. So it gave it away. However, good on them for a real hint. I hate when hints have nothing to do with anything!

This craft is pretty simple. You throw some scent you like together and welcome the world to your come hither smells!

I am disappointed that I was scent only floral/fruity scents to mix. It feels like it is a tease to see the other scent notes on the card and not be able to achieve them from the contents of the box. I do like that they have both a spray a roll on.

In the end I am a grown ass woman and cucumber melon just isn’t doing it for me anymore. I am going to offer this to my boss for her preteen daughter to have fun with. Unless you think it is too grown up for someone of that age. Let me know, as I have no children yet and my idea of “age appropriate” is TOTALLY a guess!

It makes me think of BBW. I think the preteen will enjoy it. I love the literary reference. I tried to read Divine Comedy last summer with my teen who found it to be intimidating. I miss Darby Smart. I need to catch up on my craft boxes. I ordered the Mother’s Day Twined box which arrived Monday. I never got a chance to open it.

Can’t wait to see what is coming Friday 🙂

The 2 crafts in the Twined box are the Zentangle Notebook and Watercolor cards. They sound relaxing to me. I haven’t had a chance to make the crafts yet.

This is perfect for a preteen girl and also for a grandma, I think. But I also think this kit was a bust. They only gave you 3 fragrances, and one of them is cucumber melon. I don’t think you’ll get far mixing these. Years ago I got my daughters a Scientific Explorer Perfumerie kit, which was also around $20, but came with 5 fragrances to mix, recipes and the like. I should also note that at the end of the day you end up with a perfume oil, rather than a perfume. It would have been better, and provide more craft time, if they included the ingredients to make a solid perfume.

I unsubscribed this month in favor of subscribing to Darby Girl, so I didn’t get this (and I’m glad). I’m reconsidering Darby altogether, however, as the last few kits have been a great value. I have liked that so far all the crafts have been new to us, but this perfume kit wouldn’t have been.

Guess what I found in my craft box corner? A surprise for you! Darby Smart messed up on my order in December by sending me the wrong items. I purchased a wood burning ornament kit and received the wood burning thingy and the letters. They told me to keep it and then sent me the correct kit. I was going to send it to you as a surprise, but your address was not on the package.

I have one wood burning tool and the letter hotstamps. Send me your address and it will be on your way.

Verry late comment, was just seeing what you’d gotten from DS!

Ohh, both my perfumes turned out pretty gross. I even had ALL of my massage therapist sister-in-law’s essential oils, but I think I got a little zesty with some of the scents. Also, I don’t like that the bottles stream spray instead of spritzing. I should add some alcohol or something. And then I should put some rubbing alcohol into the perfume oil. Hahaha. Call me Cocktailista!
